Martin's response to the racial criticisms hurled at the finale/"white savior" scene. It's from his blog comments so I won't post a link, as multiple comments contain spoilers.

Martin:

Personally I thought the scene was bad, but my problem was more with how it was shot than the races involved per se. It just came off very cheesy.

As I understand it, the complaints are mostly that the scene was not being conscious of the fact that, yeah there may not be race implications in the world of the show, but the show/this story doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's being broadcast to a world that has had a history with such issues and is still pretty tense about them. That is how I've seen it explained. Plus it's a common trope that people are sick of seeing. The white protagonist comes to a strange land and saves the day. Or something like that.

My opinion? Regardless of the racial undertones, real or imagined, the scene was ridiculous. Why are you standing outside of a city you just defeated instead of going in there? Why did all the former slaves come out? What reason is there for them to call her mother? Was it necessary to have the cheesy "fly" moment? Why was she crowdsurfing? It seems they wanted it to be uplifting, but it just fell short for nearly everyone who saw it. And that's not even considering the race debate. eta: Why were they all posing on this random rock formation that's so conveniently placed?

I personally think that if the scene hadn't been so bad as a scene itself, people wouldn't be talking about the race element quite so much. When you're as good as game of thrones it will be that much more jarring when something makes you roll your eyes

I wanted to hook my father on the books, since he is not the tv watching type, and I found out that the books in my country are all split up in two parts. So game of thrones is two books with completely different titles (lords of winterfell and legacy of winterfell). And they translated some of the names. Jon snow for example has the word snow translated to our language. Wtf.

I would assume that's because the bastard names are named for the climate/geography of that region. It's not a legitimate name. Some lord probably had a bastard, needed a last name for him, looked around and saw some snow. So he named him snow. And that's how the custom started. It's more of a descriptive thing than an actual name, the way I see it. It's to convey what they are and their position without bringing in awkward conversations.

Yup, the name notes which region of Westeros the bastard was born in. So Jon and Ramsay (Bolton's bastard/creepy guy torturing Theon) are both Snows, even though they aren't related.

Does anyone here think Littlefinger is going to be pissed that Catelynn was murdered? He did have legit feelings for her once upon a time. Now he's supposed to hook up with her sister.

I remember Cersi punked him that time to show him "true power"

Deep down, he may legitimately hate the Lannisters, even though he's also a villain and has benefitted from helping them out.

I don't know what Littlefinger will feel. Him and Lysa were childhood friends so it's not out of the question they team up and kick some ass. Although their castle in the Eyrie is impregnable. It's impossible to invade so maybe she's content to just stay out of the conflict. Whitewalkers may be able to scale the mountain walls, so I guess they could become a threat forcing her hand in some way.

A friend of mine says to me last sunday that game of thrones is crazy and I should watch it.... I tell her no because I didn't think I had the time to invest in a new series. One Sunday later after having no idea what the show was even about, I finished the whole series and was thrown for an entire fuck with everything that happened on season 3.

Hbo go with the interactive menu made for an enjoyable experience for someone that didn't know a damn thing about the show. The videos/map/background info helped me a ton.

Glad I can sleep again.

Lysa ia crazy. No way she helps to do anything.

And people dont like Littlefinger. Will be hard for him to lead a rebellion.

I don't think Littlefinger is going rebel against the crown and go to war over Catelyn's death, but I wouldn't be surprised if he came up with some secret scheme or manipulation (things he's good at) to get back at the parties involved.

yeah, i feel like littlefinger's feelings for cat is a chekhov's gun. why make a big deal about it if nothing ever comes of it?

unless it was only to show even more motivation for betraying ned. that would be unnecessary though.

I don't see Littlefinger openly rebelling against anyone - in fact, that's the exact opposite of what he's always done and it's what got both Ned and Robb killed - but I could see him helping to facilitate someone else in killing Joffrey or Bolton or Frey, whomever he sees responsible.

Because what comes of it is that she happens to have a daughter that I'm pretty sure it has been stated looks exactly like she used to.

It probably is a chekhov's gun. But I think being a super creep and making a move at Sansa is more in character for him than making an effort to avenge Catlyn.

That way his plans still continue and he gets to have Catelyn in a sick, pedo way.

Baelish needs an army if he wants to be king. The only way to get one is to fuck Lysa's brains out since he implied she was mad crushing on him. The fact that Cate died might be enough added weight to convince Lysa to go to war. They could go into King's Landing pretending they're good buds with the Lannisfolk and then BAM TROJAN HORSE IN YOUR CASTLE WALLS, BITCHES! By the time they sack the place, it'll be way too late for reinforcements and he can probably get those fairweather Tyrells on his side. Bam, combine for biggest army in Westeros and the second richest family up in this bitch. With Lysa on your side, you can probably get the Tullys too. Stannis ain't shit, so he can be crushed easily. Bolton's a little bitch, so he'll bow down. The only problems would be Frey and Greyjoy, but Greyjoy ain't shit on land.

All hail king Littlefucker!

I didn't even notice the racial difference at all but I guess I come from a place where it's not as much of a topic as it is elsewhere.

As much as I'd miss Littlefinger's legendary rhetorical battles with Varys, he deserves to be dropped from that skyhole in the Vale throne room a thousand times. For Ned, and to rid two planets of his unlikable face. Seriously fuck'em.

I do wonder if sending Littlefinger to meet with Lysa is Twyin throwing shit against the wall. If it sticks he gets the Vale's support, fortifying the Lannister's control over The Seven Kingdoms. Lysa along with her batshit son are Baelish's problem. If it doesn't, and Lysa seeks revenge for Cat(and even John Arryn), all he loses is a rat and at least knows where the Vale stands. They were more than willing to kill Tyion, a grimy little pimp is nothing.

Don't forget they also kidnapped her brother. I don't think they're starting negotiations on the right foot!

Tywin is supplying the Mountain Folk with steel. All Tywin really needs to do is starve the Vale and it'll be his eventually.

Plus I highly doubt any of the Vales bannermen would come to Petyr's cause and neither Lysa's, unless it were to avenge Catelyn, Robb and Ned.

I wouldn't touch Lysa with my dick if you gave me money for it.
I recommend the same to Littlefinger.
Any woman who could conceivably bring their child into bed to breastfeed instead of telling them to go back to sleep when they innocently walk in on you in the middle of the act is firmly bumped down to "maybe" in my book.

Do not fucking go into the Daenerys thread in the OT. Fuck me.

Screw this. I'm gonna read the damn books.
Honestly, I don't mean to sound nasty, but what the hell did you expect? It's a character analysis, of course people will draw from the source material.

Also, FWIW, it was the mildest kind of spoilers, and you are actually wrong about your interpretation of the spoiler (I'm not going to say in which ways unless you want to know [PM me if so], but no, I'm not lying to make you feel better either). If you're that sensitive to even this, why did you a) click on that thread and b) highlight the tagged spoiler (which was clearly marked as a book spoiler too)? Sorry, but this isn't like that drive-by spoilering asshole in that Don Mattrick thread, you kind of have yourself to blame here.

Has anyone here listened to at least the first two books on tape/CD?

I'm taking a massive journey in August and am tossing around the idea of getting the first one to listen to. For some reason when I'm driving I don't get as drowsy when I'm listening to a book on CD. :p

I don't want to get ahead of the show, which is why I only mentioned the first two.

It wasn't spoiler-tagged at first though, Mumei spoiler tagged it for him after people had already seen it. But I agree, it's a pretty mild spoiler.

I expect people to read the title of the thread and to display some common courtesy. And that was not a mild spoiler.
How was determining a character's fate for at least two to three seasons of the show a mild spoiler?

Holy shit, I was just in that thread but left after a few post because something else was on my mind. I really need to start reading the books.

Actually I did forget about poor Edmure, locked away in Walder's dungeon. I suppose they could threaten his life, but if he dies wouldn't Lysa's son have rightful claim to The Riverlands? And I don't even know if she cares the slightest bit about Edmure.

Now that I think about it Black Fish might be heading the same way as well. Where else would he go besides to the only allies he has left? I imagine he won't be too happy with House Lannister.

I'm glad you guys come in here to warn of spoilers. Although I've entered Game of Thrones threads before and haven't been spoiled, if I see any book related discussion at all I back out.

I'm curious to go back and read that thread about Richard Madden being cast as a Prince in some movie a while ago to see if anyone hinted at the red wedding, but I didn't notice anything at the time.

I also accidentally scrolled down on a youtube video the other day because it took a while to load and I kind of spaced, thankfully the only comment that got upvoted enough was about Jaime's beardless face.

i also think it's inherently a spoiler just to say "this dude sucked in book 5" because then the viewers know that certain character will be alive by season 5/6 or whatever.

and this is a series that takes pride in killing characters by surprise. so yeah...sorry y'all had to read that thread.

I have. The audiobooks are all excellent. They're read by Roy Dotrice, who was to have played Pycell in the show, but became ill when season 1 was filming. They did get him in a cameo for S2 as the Pyromancer in King's Landing who makes the WildFire for the Battle of the Blackwater. He voices all the characters, and gives a nice accent to all the various regions.

Are we talking about the Danerys as a role model thread? I went to try and delete it from my subscriptions before I accidentally end up clicking it but it seems to have disappeared. Unless it left the first page of my list.

Edit: Nevermind. Found it.

There were several spoilery posts referencing Robb's fate but duckroll deleted them all fairly swiftly.

I have no idea where this goes so I'll just post it here.

This is Emilia Clarke right?

I'll take it down if it isn't.

Edit: Turns out it isn't her

Guys, don't go back and read posts, cause then you'll all see how I straight up lied to everyone by alluding that HUGE spoiler drunk post was fake. :(

I was spoiled in that very thread. Some idiot just posted "well, it's not like he will have much to do after this season of GoT is over" so even though it wasn't super specific, I immediately knew what it meant.

And that was after several posts were cleaned up where people were spoiling the same thing. I should have known better than to enter tangentially related threads, but seriously, I didn't expect to be spoiled there first of all places. I'd say my enjoyment and surprise of the episode was lessened a bit, but I also think that if you were paying attention during that very episode, you could foresee something like that was about to happen.

On the other hand, they could start combing through some of the old stuff to see how there might've been a few "non-book" posters that were a little too clairvoyant with their predictions too...

Ditto. I can't remember if we permed him for it or not. Others pointed out what a spoiler it was.

Dude, why would you go in there? The title says no spoilers, of course someone was going to go against that and ruin everything. Common sense should have told you to stay away from that one, I wasn't going near it with a ten foot pole.

You non-book watchers really should just unplug your TVs, your Internet, and not go out of the house until the series ends.

Might be best not to open any windows either, just in case.
