Game of Thrones *NO BOOK SPOILERS* |OT| Season 3 - Sundays on HBO [Read the OP]

Just FYI, the teaser is out and has two humongous twists in it. You may not want to watch it if you want to go in blind.

Urgh what... who thought that was a good idea? One of the most enjoyable things about watching the show having not read the books is everyone blowing up when the big twists happen.

Where's the teaser?

edit: Saw it on youtube. Might be too damn early but I didn't see anything super surprising in there. It's just a 6 second clip.

Well, they don't show the twists per se, but show 1s snippets of what follows after it. So people speculate and gossip about what might have caused the scene shown.

But I know the regulars in this thread might not agree with said teasing so I thought I'd give you a heads up.

Definitely do not see what the big "twists" are just from that tease.
In fact, unless people who read and know make a big deal out of things nobody will know or have any context for anything (and yes I have).

SPOILER BLOCK CONCERNS THE TEASER:
Tyrion in chains would count as a big twist, no?

Anyone who hasn't read the books won't get anything spoilery from that. It's a bunch of shots without context, though 2 scenes you can identify right away if you've read the books.

No risk there for non-readers. Watch away. (but obviously do not read any analysis of the clip)

He was in chains before in Season 1 or at least tied up, nobody knows why this time. To non readers it may be nothing, unless people make it to be a big deal. It is people who know that are being stupid about it and making it to be something big.

Well that's what an average person would think. thisisneogaf.gif
It's because
it implies something happens some people will throw a hissy fit over it.
. Just covering the bases for people who want to go in completely blind.

We have our own thread, people. Leave these people in peace or this thread will look like a declassified CIA document filled with black lines.

That said... I can't fucking wait for this season!

Question for book readers: if I wait for season 4 to air in its entirety before watching it, will I regret it? I know everyone who did that for season 3 had the red wedding spoiled for them and I wouldn't want that to happen. I guess I'm asking if there are any major events on the horizon that will take over the internet again. A simple yes or no is all I want.

EDIT: someone PM'd me the answer. Thank you!

Well, even having read the books isn't enough to know exactly what will be in S4. The show is getting more popular and really becoming a part of the zeitgeist (south park parodies for example) so I'm gonna say yes.

Yes you will probably regret it.

I waited for season 3, didn't get spoiled. (but it was hell)

Couldn't bear doing that again for season 4 (and further) so I read the books.

I don't suppose you could elaborate on this could you? Just curious really because S2 & S3 are like night and day for me.

The episode where Tyrion got Poderick the whores as a thanks is currently on.

Oh how I remember our silly debates where half of us knew Pod laid the pipe and the other half thought Tyrion paid them to build up his ego.

Good times.

Haha that created some shockingly heated discussions.

So I never read the books or watched any of the show. My wife has been watching since episode 1 season 1.

She finally convinced me to watch so over the past week I caught up to the end of season 3.

I like the show but also don't. I mean its great but good lawd is it frustrating to see some of the soap opera elements. And while I have to believe that at the end the "bad guys" will get what's coming to them, I just couldn't get past the red wedding. I mean Robb Stark was my favorite character so far and it just seemed like a shocking betrayal just for the sake of shock. Everyone that you get attached to to root for is killed off.

The Starks seem to get more and more separated and more and more killed while those who did them wrong seem to be doing just fine. At this point even if they get their revenge, so much of their own family has been killed it still won't feel right.

I also didn't like or get how with Bran muffin and his younger brother trapped in that tower couldn't at least re unite with Snow who was fighting the wildlings outside. Just seemed forced as did the whole Arya getting so close to her family.

Its exhausting to watch.

You're about 2 seasons behind where the books are. All I will say is that a lot happens.

I loved that scene. GAF almost ruined it by getting so damn analytical as usual.

It was just a really funny one-off thing that helped bring a bit of humour into an otherwise pretty dark season.

I agree with everything you've said.

Just understand that there is so much more left to tell. But it makes it very frustrating for show watchers and book readers since there is so much time in between events.

To be fair, Jon was fighting against the wildlings. Bran couldn't just yell out the tower and say hi, it could have gotten them all killed. There was nothing he could do. The only thing I didn't like was Bran later saying "oh yea, I saw Jon lol" almost like an afterthought.

Yeah I figured as much.

Are the books finished? Or are there more books to come out?

If I was to read the books from this point on (end of season 3) could I just pick up the books and understand everything? Or do the books cover so much more that I would be lost?

I almost always prefer books over the tv/movie adaptations and now the wait to know what happens next is killing me. Which book would it be if I were to pick it up from this point?

Tons of pretty girls in the show but to me the top 3 are

1. Daenerys
2. The girl Robb married - reminded me of JLH
3. Maggy

More questions! :

Is there any reason why people away from the Kingdoms are usually the darker skinned people? Almost all the cities and people Daenerys encounters are shown as savages, beasts, and brown.

True but I figured since he became the wolf and Jon saw the wolf that it was the perfect opportunity for them to reunite.

I actually thought the leader of their little group would also be killed and Jon and his red haired woman would find Bran and his brother (I always forget his name).

That's handled better in the books, IMO.

And in the books Robb is a lot less hot/likeable, so I can see why people are upset.

Why is less likeable in the books?

Or is it a spoiler?

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
So far he's speared the captain of the King's guard and 3 hookers; I can't wait to see who get's the Pod next season.

There needs to be a [Podrick Intensifies] pic out there somewhere.

You'd be introduced to a bunch of names, characters, etc that don't appear in the show which would be confusing. However if you do decided to start late, you should read the third book (A Storm Of Swords) from the beginning. S3 covers about half of it, but I'd discourage folks from just flipping to the middle.

Yeah, start from the beginning of book 3 and be prepared to refer to the indexes in the back a lot. It is actually more exciting and dramatic than the show, which cut a lot of stuff out.

People are darker because of climate/sun exposure.

Robb isn't less likable as much as less knowable first hand as his story is told through Kat. That part of the story is more interesting though as it goes into more detail about all the houses/people sworn to the Starks.

GRRM based his world on a version of the real world. The Seven Kingdoms is roughly analogous to the UK (although much larger in terms of landmass). While the lands beyond the Narrow Sea are a mix of the Middle East and Asia. Hence, why the majority of the people in Westeros are white and why those in Essos are darker-skinned.

EDIT: There will be some brown-skinned folk from the Seven Kingdoms introduced in S4.

In the books, all of the Stark children are younger so naturally less... mature.
Richard Madden, on the other hand, looks like a man. A hot, hot man.

They take him from an inexperienced kid and make him into a hunk.
He's much more reliant on his bannermen for success, for example.

I won't spoil the books because I would recommend reading them and not to be one of those smug assholes but Robb is a better character in the books as is much of the series.

It's fair to say without spoilers that all of the Starks are a lot less likable in the books than in the show. They're considerably deeper and it's easier to understand what they're thinking, what motivates them, and what scares them.

Their flaws and thoughts and voices shine through -- writing in voice (particularly Arya and Sansa with such distinct thoughts and age-appropriate inner dialogue) is one of GRRM's particular strong suits.

That doesn't mean losing them or seeing them punished is any less heart-rending. It only means it's easier to see in hindsight that they fucking had it coming. Dumbasses. Jesus fuck.

In defense of the casting department, he does look close enough to the appropriate age in season 1. Maybe not the exact age that he's written as, but pretty damn close. It's actually sort of stunning going back and seeing how much he's matured. Not much anyone can do to predict that though. Maybe they could've kept the beard off, but that wouldn't have played as well into their marketing strategy.

Long time fan of the book and I like the show too. You're totally right. It's worse in the books because these moments... you have to read them over 20 and 30 minutes, not see them in 60 seconds, and it just makes it more excruciating

I think we all appreciate no one really spoiling anything in here, but regardless this thread shouldn't have any book discussion/comparison.

If you are someone that hasn't read the books and want to ask a book related question, PMs would probably be a better place to do that. Just ask and I'm sure those of who have read the books would be happy to answer some questions (myself included).
