Damn, David Nutter and Alan Taylor too expensive now?

Isn't episode 9 usually the "big" thing, and then episode 10 reflects on what just happened and sets up the next season?

Yes. They probably botched that.

Anyway, more Marshall is awesome news. Battle of Blackwater was about the ballest thing I've ever seen on TV.

Nutter said he wanted to take a break from GoT after doing it the past 2 years. And Alan Taylor is a hot director in Hollywood now (Thor 2, Terminator reboot), so he'll probably never come back to GoT.

Alan Taylor left the show to direct Thor 2 and now he's doing the new Terminator film. I don't see Taylor directing TV anytime soon. I'm not sure why Nutter isn't returning, possibly scheduling, possibly David and Dan wanted to go with other people.

I for one am very happy that Alex Graves is doing 4 episodes. I was extremely impressed with his work in episodes 4 and 5 of season 3.

Just want to go on record and say i09 is one of my favorite sites. Perfect mix/curation of sci-fi and fantasy in pop culture with a healthy dose of real science (debunking myths) and writer-support. Absolutely love it.

Personally I think Taylor directed the two best episodes of the show (Baelor and Fire & Blood, from S1), but Graves' Kissed By Fire is probably my third favorite. Easily the best of S3 to me.

Not a fan of David Nutter, but it probably has more to do with the episodes he had. Obviously ep9 was good last season, if a bit overrated but the finale was bad imo. Reminded me of some of the early S1 episodes in terms of pedestrian shots (the whole Arya/Frey attack for instance). And iirc he directed some of the Dany-centric S2 episodes. God those Quarth scenes were like a SyFy show.

Yeah you'll never hear me say he didn't nail the wedding, but overall I don't think Nutter is the best fit for this show either. Nutter has directed more TV pilots than anyone else, ever, and his episodes feel like someone trying to get a lot into a network TV 42 minute slot. There are a lot of quick cuts, scenes often feel rushed compared to the usual pacing of scenes that guys like Taylor helped capture.

How is the show filmed? I would imagine that because its so many varied locales and such a huge production that they film all at once?

Or do they do the traditional shoot an episode per 1-2 week?

And with Martin helping write some of the tv episodes, doesn't this delay the books further?

They have a unit for each location and film the whole season in chunks, they said it takes them almost the entire year off that they have in between seasons which is why they can't really do more than 10 episodes.

And Martin does a lot of stuff that's going to delay the books further. He's already signed on for multiple other series that he shouldn't have time for.

Two film crews, three countries, filmed mostly in blocks that favor the actors schedule. As you might imagine, that means it's largely filmed out of order. Principal filming takes about six months.

With the sub zero temps I decided to curl up on the couch and check out GoT this past weekend. Had no idea what I was getting into put I was hooked and ended up marathoning the entire series (short of sleep).

Just finished S3 last night before bed and wow... Just wow. I saw some stuff coming but not what happened to Robb and company. Damn! Can't wait for season 4.

Honestly, I think Martin is an irresponsible writer. He knows it's coming, he's said it in interviews. Through season's 1-3 people had legit excuses "conferences, press events, and things of that nature are usually scheduled years ahead of time, he didnt know the show was going to be a hit/catching up". Well we're four years now and he just keeps booking shit.

Please note that any teaser/promo/trailer discussion should be spoiler tagged in this thread.

In addition, book readers should use the other thread for discussion.

Thanks for your help.

Is there a thread where people going through the books can compare to the show? I'm mainly a show watcher but started with the books, and I don't want to walk into a wall of unmarked spoilers when discussing the show/books. If anything, the first book has given me an appreciation for how closely the show is to the source material. At least for the first season.

edit: i'm pretty sure there was one during season 3

No, there isn't. The general feeling is that two threads is plenty to support the show, and most people fall into the category of either having read everything or nothing at all. I understand that it's difficult for people caught in the middle, but there are no plans to make a third thread at this point.

The thread for book readers will have tagged spoilers if it follows the same rules as last year. The off season thread is untagged spoilers.

The thread for book readers will have untagged spoilers for all of the books this year.
wasnt this handled differently in the past years because people might click on the wrong thread?
personally - as a book reader - I wouldnt mind. we still have the community ASOIAF thread for discussions witthout tags.

Yes, this was handled differently during the first three seasons. There was a lot of demand for a no spoiler tags thread last year, so we made the switch before the off season thread.

IIRC there were three different threads during S1. It was a bit of a mess. It's just more convenient to have two threads and leave it at that.

ok, completely understandable

I just would have felt terrible if someone got the red wedding spoiled for him, even if it was 100% his fault because he clicked the wrong thread

That happened to me countless times. Luckily enough I've learn to close tabs with the quickness since then.

I'll talk to Steely about the thread titles and hopefully we can come up with something that avoids confusion as much as possible. In general, my advice would be to look carefully before you click and possibly use subscriptions to make sure you're tracking the correct thread.

This can be totally avoid if you subscribe to the no book spoilers thread and only enter it from the Subscriptions section and not the Off-Topic one.
