Game Pass Is "Not For Everybody," says Phil Spencer

Yes, your Royal Higness!

This is what you said 👇

I was interested in hearing how do you deny it.
Okay. I thought it was a rhetorical question.

Well, I deny the value because it isn't really for me. It's too expensive for a list of games that I don't even choose. It's mostly filled with Indie titles that I can get way cheaper on PC, especially if I wait for sales. I'm not a fan of XGS games in general, and them releasing on day-one on GP doesn't really do anything for me.

It's the reason why I have never subscribed to Game Pass, even though GP PC is much cheaper.
Apparently you cant.

Gamepass hasn't grown mostly because a lot of people are on multiple systems.

It makes a lot of sense for xbox only folks.
I was talking about Xbox only folks. 2/3rd of Xbox console user base did not subscribe to Game Pass (before they had to roll it into XBLG), which means that even the majority of Xbox-only folks did not find enough value to subscribe.

All I see is…

"I dont play xbox games"

Cool, I guess.

There isn't any legit argument to be made against value offered by gamepass.

Me this, me that… thats all there is to it really.

So if you admit that the argument can be made that there may not be value for game pass on a personal level (which is what Phil Spencer is saying) then that in itself is a "legit argument to made against value offered by gamepass".

oh i remember how this was supposed to be the tsunami that will change the landscape forever. one billion paying subscribers etc.
those were fun times

lol that is a legit argument, i.e., "I don't find enough value in the rental games that are usually offered against $240 per year."

The actual argument is the viability of GP's business model. It's not about value, options, or being consumer-friendly; those are just PR and marketing buzzwords. So, in terms of analysis or the commentocracy around all things gaming, we've seen Phil Spencer's vision completely fail, including Game Pass's role in his master plan

Don't worry fam, I hear they're gonna shut it down before CoD 2024.

So...

If Microsoft decided to end Game Pass service, and stopped day one releases on PC, and focused on exclusives for Xbox only, would that be good for them?

It might be good for them in the long long run, i-e another gen or two beyond, but as an immediate effect, they're gonna piss off millions of people, suffer mass cancellations to their recurring sub services and possibly more than one class action lawsuits.

Personally, I don't see them ending GP outright any time soon, if ever.

Even if they did cancel Game Pass (they won't) PC ports won't end. Their future is more PC/xCloud, not console.

They can't, because Activision by itself is making more money than Xbox. So they can't sacrifice a known money earner to try to make a failing division more profitable. Xbox literally took on more than they could chew, and got taken over by Activision because Xbox was the smaller fish.

Right, I get that you don't use gamepass. So this is expected.

Doing everything legit, I pay some equivalent of $40 a year, for six months of subscription. Rest of 6 months I play purchased SP titles.

Will be disaster.

Going multi platform is a must.

Even the most hardcore Xbox fans who promoted GamePass stacked monthly subs at $1 because they too knew it wasn't worth it full price.

Only the dumbest of the dumbest believed in Xbox' strategy.
Huh? People who took advantage of a trick to save themselves money to get something they like for cheaper didn't actually like it enough to pay for it because they didn't not use the available trick to save money? That is utter fucking nonsense. What other things do you believe, that people who buy things on sale are assholes and should have paid full price if they really liked what they scored a deal on. Or people who haggle a car dealer should just walk instead because they don't believe driving is worth it?

No, we are just saying the whole point of being a fan is to spend more money. So we are judging the alleged fans of Xbox for not realizing that their actions directly impacted the profitability of Xbox as a whole.

If you are a fan, you pay more. That works for any fan of any type, even sports. To not willing to pay more means you are in it for the short term, to milk the bargains before it goes away. And now, finally, it is going away.

We are not "really" judging you. We are just saying actions have consequences.

Meanwhile, we have threads here on Gaf where the biggest xbox fans discuss ways to buy subs for cheap because it isn't worth it fullprice.

This is dumb logic. Using a deal and saving money is just smart. Doesn't mean you don't value whatever you are buying.

You'd be right if you knew for a fact that those "biggest Xbox fans" wouldn't subscribe to GamePass if those deals weren't there, but you don't know.

I buy cheap keys for GamePass off of key sites. If I couldn't do that, I'd pay the normal price.

Someone said above that paying more makes you more of a "fan". Incorrect. Paying full price when there are cheaper avenues just makes you a sucker. Congrats.

That means you are in it for your own benefit. You don't love the thing you buy at all. Fans want to nurture and grow what they love so there will be more of what they love produced. if you just want to slash and burn and gain economically in any way you can, you get the fall of Xbox. it is all correlated. You spend, you get more in the long run. You don't spend, you get more in the short run but it ends.

Who is the sucker, the one who still has a console ecosystem to hold all their past purchases, perhaps for decades to come, or the one who is about to lose a large chunk of their library because the ecosystem is being dismantled?

True, both statements don't exclude eachother though.

No, but we do know there are people in here that say they only sub for a month for a game they really want to play for cheap and then let it be again.

This is completely fair. No argument there.

Again, congrats on being a sucker I guess.

He's right. Most people don't finish games. A service that offers more games is inherently at odds with what most people do.

It sounds like an oversimplification but it's just reality. If most people don't finish the food on their plate, offering them more food isn't going to work.

That's why they now have to sell their software on platforms that haven't nuked their sales economy. It's a Scooby Doo mystery how a multi-trillion dollar company, staffed with economists and industry experts, didn't see this exact scenario happening.

They did. Internally people tried to warn Phil and stop him, but he wanted to push this. He is personally responsible for killing Xbox which is impressive after someone else already killed it.

Apparently, it had 3 lives. RROD, One reveal with MCC launch, and then Series with Infinite and Gamepass. It feels like when Starfield came out it was on the harrowing "0 life" where your one job is to find a 1up but just fall in the first pit because you're nervous.

All critical points that they had full control over with no impact from their competition. Xbox has to completely own its own failure.

You might as well laugh at vintage car owners. "haha! Your car would depreciate in value!" "But I love these cars." "You are a sucker that you buy what you enjoy rather than what makes you the most money!"

Money is meant to be spent to make your life better. I guess you are in the money for money's sake stage of life.

It'll be ok, man. People can spend their money on whatever they want. You're the one taking down to people because they don't spend it the way you want them to.
