Game remasters/collections worthy of a purchase?

Hey GAF, what game collections/remasters are worthy of a purchase for nostalgia purposes? Obviously it depends on personal preferences but I'd like to know your thoughts. I saw the Crysis trilogy selling very cheap on PSN, and have been on a back and forth whether to get them. I remember having a good time with Crysis 2, even 3, but being Asian, that ~USD10 could be used towards MH Wilds. I'm calculative that way. The recent announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 sparked an interest to get the NG Master Collection too. Thoughts?

Kingdom Hearts 1&2 3.14159 turbo remix redux remastered whatever the fuck they're calling it these days (if you like Disney or FF).

I would say that Master Collection versions of 2 and 3 are better. Yes they lack the pressure sensitivity but they have fixed many things and framerate is better. Also you can upscale them to 4K on some consoles.
Nah, the one I posted is better, sorry. Pressure sensitivity is real and matters to me, the physical artbook matters to me. I love having the artwork in my hands be real and makes me feel connected to the experience, the smell of the artbook and the little PS3 case, it's satisfying. I'm not that dead inside yet.

Then buy an art book. The updated versions are better.

Anything from Bluepoint Games:
God of War collection
The Ico & Shadow of the Colossus Collection (for the PS3)
Metal Gear Solid HD Collection
Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection
Gravity Rush Remastered
Shadow of the Colossus (for the PS4)
Demon's Souls

I think it's safe to say almost everything that Nintendo is doing too. They're doing it for decades often on their weaker handheld hardware.

StarCraft and Diablo 2 from Blizzard.

Yeah, various Capcom collections have been pretty good. I wish they had console version collection, but what we got is still great.

Konami various collections have been very good, from Castlevania to TMNT.

And SNK had a few really good collections.

Strictly remasters and collections:

Yeah, not a collection but the best remaster Square Enix will ever do:
That you can speed up the game with a button press transforms it from a 9/10 to a 10/10, imho.

Also (not necessarily collections but pretty good remasters):
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD
Metroid Prime Remastered
StarCraft Remastered
The Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
Konami's Castlevania collections

PS3 had quite a few good HD collections but some are expensive these days. Not just first party stuff either (Sly Cooper trilogy, R&C trilogy, Jak & Daxter trilogy, God of War, ICO & SOTC etc) but third parties did some decent stuff on occasion that we've seen on later systems too (FFX & X-2, Kingdom Hearts, Devil May Cry trilogy, Splinter Cell trilogy etc). I still try to grab some of the PS3 collections every so often, even imported them too like with Samurai Warriors 2 Empires HD & K-On! Houkago Live!! HD Ver. :messenger_sunglasses:

Wind Waker HD is the main reason I still have the WiiU hooked up. Nintendo did a great job with that one, shame they don't still have the same energy these days :messenger_grinning_sweat:

There's a pretty heavy rumor saying that Nintendo are sitting on ports of Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD for the Switch since forever. So the guess right now is that they'll use these to pad out Switch 2 launch window to have something Zelda related.

Bluepoint's remaster of Uncharted 1-3 would top my list. Gravity Rush Remastered and the Mass Effect Legendary edition are worth a purchase, too.

Mass Effect Legendary
Halo MCC
Tomb Raider 1-3
Assassin's Creed Ezio
Borderlands Handsome Jack
Homeworld collection
Command & Conquer collection

Horizon Zero Dawn
Age of Empires 2 & 4
Age of Mythology Retold

Looking ahead there's the Lunar collection and the Suikoden collection coming out soon. The Mega Man collection is good as is the Grandia collection. The Sega collection was a good one as well but it got delisted. The Atari collection is ok but there's a lot of old games in it.

Anything done by M2 should be an instant buy : Castlevania, Advance, Contra, Collection of Mana.
I also recommend the Wonder Boy Anniversary Collection, extremely well made, tons of options and bonuses.
Digital Eclipse have been pretty okay : Cowabunga, Capcom Fighting and Marvel Collection all good.
Tomb Raider I II III is top notch.
Neo Geo Pocket Volume 1 by Code Mystics is also high quality.

All I have to recommend are remasters.

Hear me out: Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age makes sweeping changes to the the US version of the game, all of which are for the better. It's the definitive edition of the game and it still holds up.

This one is a little more controversial but I do love Tactics Ogre Reborn. I do think the level cap should have been optional (also extremely hypocritical of this forum to love the Soulslike games for not having an easy mode but hating Tactics Ogre for not letting you over level and steamroll through the game, but I digress) but the challenge is never unsurmountable, and the entire game has been rebalanced for it.

Persona 3 Reload: I'm not quite through this one me yet but am like 70 hours in and it's the definitive version of the game. People don't like that The Answer was sold as DLC but The Answer kind of sucks anyway, you don't need it.

Halo MCC is great, it made me appreciate Halo 3 which I found just okay on 360 back then. ODST was masterful and even Reach was fun. The bump in resolution really lets the art direction and skyboxes come through.

Mass Effect Legendary is another must have. There was some criticism but its on console the best way to play ME by far. The first game is far more doable on this collection and it shot up to one of the best games I have ever played.

FF Zodiac Age is the best FF game ever made in my opinion. Its that good. Sadly I only have an XSS and PS5 so I am stuck at 30fps for this one.

The Kingdom Hearts collection is masterful too, especially the PS4 one that combines the first 2 games as well as the PSP game. Its simply better than the original release in every way. And you can't go wrong with the FFX collection either, which also drew some criticism but I prefer it over the original PS2 game.

Yeah but how user friendly is it, or is it a game where you have to do crazy button combinations just to pull of a special move?
They have implemented one button special moves and one button super finishers so that litterally 6 years old can play and look like they are professionals.

It's very user-friendly if you're not a hardcore fighting game fan

I might need to check it out in that case, only because I have the Capcom fighting collection that includes Dark Stalkers etc, but I don't think that had one button special move option..(though I could be wrong)

Honestly, these collections have gotten so much better lately that it's easier to mention the ones that suck.

Here are some collections that are generally regarded as being of poor quality:

Splinter Cell (PS3)
Prince of Persia (PS3)
Jak and Daxter (Vita)
Grand Theft Auto (PS4/XB1)
Silent Hill 2 and 3 (PS3/360)
Final Fantasy Chronicles (PS1)
Street Fighter 30th anniversary collection (Switch) Note: not necessarily bad, just unimpressive/overpriced at the time
Mafia (PS4/Xb1) Note: This one isn't bad, as the remake of the first is excellent...but 2 and 3 got almost no improvements.

As someone who buys a lot of these, here are my favorites:
Mass Effect Trilogy (Ps4/Xb1)
Ratchet and Clank Collection (PS3)
Castlevania Dominus Collection (all modern systems)
God of War (PS3: both the Origins and regular collections)
Namco Museum Virtual Arcade (360)
Halo: MCC (xb1)
Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection
Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 Enhanced Editions (Xb1/PS4/Switch)
