I loved black myth wukong so I will hopefully love whatever this is and will be.

Anyone know much about Zhong Kui?

Edit.. From Wikipedia

Zhong Kui is a Taoist deity in Chinese mythology, traditionally regarded as a vanquisher of ghosts and evil beings. He is depicted as a large man with a big black beard, bulging eyes, and a wrathful expression. Zhong Kui is able to command 80,000 demons to do his bidding and is often associated with the five bats of fortune. Worship and iconography of Zhong Kui later spread to other East Asian countries, and he can also be found in the folklores and mythologies of Korea, Japan, and Vietnam.

Is Zhong Kui the monkey's uncle?
top nerd student becomes rejected by the emperor

proceeds on with bashing his skull through the palace gates until he dies

becomes almost a patron saint of "household protection" against the supernatural

Is this an expansion? Sequel? side-quel? All these Chinese games are really starting to blend together and I'm losing track.
Seems it's a new game with a different mythology. You can look at this like Final Fantasy. All the same franchise but completely different games that don't necessarily take place in the universe and might or might not be connected.

Totally different game, the Black Myth name is more to indicate they are doing 3 games which are focused on Chinese mythos and folklore.
Glad they confirmed they not done with the Wukong games yet though.

Looks like this is veeeeeeery far away. They don't even have an outline of the story nor did it evolve beyond just being an "empty folder". But who knows, Asian devs are built different. Maybe they won't need a decade like western devs. Tons of assets they can re-use from Wukong probably too.
I wasn't really fond of Wukong but I'm willing to keep an eye on this one to see how much feedback they'll take into account.

So it's based on another chinese story/myth/legend with a different character?
I loved Wukong so I'm really interested into thos studio's next project.

Until Jackie Chan appears at the end of one game and says he's putting together a team

Have to say, just bought Black Myth, and I'm very impressed. Throughly enjoying it.

Wasnt there something about Game Science acting like babies throwing their toys out of the pram for not winning game of the year or some thing?

Never heard of this guy. They should choose a more recognizable character.
Still really interested in their new game!
My dude, Zhong Kui is massively recognizable, just maybe not in your cultural bubble.

In China, he's one of the most famous mythological figures: the Demon Queller, the ghost slayer, a staple of folklore, operas, paintings, festivals, Lunar New Year decorations. He's been around for over a thousand years and has shown up in countless forms of media, movies, TV dramas, novels etc etc. If you walk through a Chinese household or temple, chances are you'll see an image of Zhong Kui guarding the place.

It's not that Zhong Kui isn't recognizable, it's that you aren't familiar with him. Which is fine, but that doesn't make him a bad choice. It actually makes him a perfect choice: players outside Asia get to experience a mythological powerhouse they might not have been exposed to yet. Same way God of War introduced a lot of people to Norse myths beyond just Odin and Thor.

Day 1.

I love that we will get to experience various mythologies from China as games. I hope they improve in their story telling aspects as they progress. But yeah, day 1 for all their games just because of how much I loved Wukong.

Wukong would rank in my top 5 soulslikes honestly, this is going to be an incredible looking game and Zhong Kui looks like a badass protagonist

Awesome. Zhong Kui is one of my favorite characters to play in Smite.

Zhong Kui combat will probably be completely different from Wukong. I hope we can summon multiple creatures at the same time and that the combat has some strategy.

Never heard about or seen him or even his name. Who would you play as in this myth? In this trailer the guy on the tiger looks like the bad guy.

Same mythology, different characters/stories. Like Ivalice in FF.

If you mean same mythology as in Chinese mythology, sure. Otherwise, as far as I'm aware, Zhong Kui and Sun Wukong are part of completely different stories and myths and don't have anything to do with one another.

Someone translated Gamescience CEO's post from Weibo on Reddit. Sounds like the Wukong DLC is not being made, and more like they'll do a new Wukong game in the future.
"The original post comes directly from his personal Weibo account.
Disclaimer: this translation was done primarily by ChatGPT, mixed with some from DeepL. It should be a pretty decent translation, but I can't guarantee it is 100% accurate, so please take it with a grain of salt, especially if you are a journalist/reporter planning to quote it.
Full translated text:
After Black Myth: Wukong launched, I was living through days that felt hazy and unreal for a long time.
Something I'd been dreaming about for nearly twenty years finally reached a result, and that result far exceeded my original expectations.
You'd think I'd be rolling on the floor with joy, humming to myself every day.
But sadly, humans aren't wired that way. Intense positive feelings seem to be short-lived, and happiness disappears in the blink of an eye.
What I really couldn't shake during that period was mostly confusion, emptiness, and a kind of dread (I know that sounds melodramatic — don't shoot me). No matter how ashamed I felt for "not being able to be happy," those emotions kept coming, uncontrollably and in waves, especially when I felt pulled under by questions like "Are you working on a DLC or not? Which characters will be in it? When will it be released?"
As a professional adult, I'm good at hiding those negative feelings and convincing myself to pull myself together and get on with making the DLC, because I knew clearly that the people asking for a DLC were, without doubt, fans who love Black Myth: Wukong and Game Science, the very people who carried us to where we are.
So for about six months after Black Myth: Wukong released, I set some directions, wrote a number of design notes, ran some meetings, and the team started executing a "DLC first" plan seriously.
That went on until one morning this year when Yang Qi messaged me: "There's something important I want to ask."
I happened to be out of the office that day, so we agreed to talk when I got back that evening.
When I was back and saw him, the first thing I asked was, "Do you not want to do the DLC and want to make something new?"
Relieved, delighted, and naturally, we were immediately on the same page.
Then we began to convince other colleagues one after another.
And that's how we arrived at what you see today, Black Myth: Zhong Kui.
A DLC would, of course, have been a solid choice, but right now we prefer to make a new Black Myth game first: new hero, new gameplay, new visual, new technology, and new story. We want to free our hands, experiment boldly, break from fixed formulas, and start from scratch.
Maybe many people think a DLC is steadier, safer, clearer, and faster, however many (ideas in) fan-made works I've seen are already far wilder than the DLC ideas we previously had in mind.
Like all of you, I love the world of Journey to the West, the world of demons, monsters, gods, and Buddhas, so Sun Wukong's legend will return in due course, in a more complete and solid way, once it's properly prepared.
As Nintendo's former president Satoru Iwata said in the book Ask Iwata, "There is no future in merely extending what already exists." Only the unknown brings surprises; only challenges bring joy.
Game Science will carry your love and hopes with us and continue to deliver each new work sincerely."
