GAMEPUMP - Service cancelled, everyone refunded + 2 bonus apology games

Trying to get a refund, what exactly is the order confirmation number? I used paypal so is it the transaction ID?

Gamepump seemed like a cool idea for a decent price but I'm not trusting them enough to deliver, I'll rather pay for the games separately if they ever even come to Steam.

Well, they are a completely new publisher. That' just how it is. Once they put one or two of their titles on Steam i'm sure they will be able to submit the rest directly to the store without issues.

eh ill stick with it. the GOG option is real nice, and if even 5 of the 15 games end up being quality its a great deal. probably would have gotten a lot less backlash if they made this announcement two days ago

It's also really nice to have more companies like Night Dive and GoG bringing classics back to relevance. Bonus if it's on steam as it's my preferred platform. I'm keeping my subscription, hoping for the best, but even if the games end up being disappointing well, it was 20 bucks.
 
I just signed up and my order is # 727.

Is it just me, or is this quite low? I know it's 'pre-launch' but I would have expected that to be much higher - unless I'm missing something and it's not sequential?

Also - My order date is January 6th, so I assume I'm eligible for the two extra games?

EDIT: The NES version of Castlevania would be pretty great, considering how bad the PC version was back in the day.

It is sequential, and yes it is low.

Pretty much only GAF bought into it. No other site talks about it.

I think the order #s are messed up because in the first week (maybe longer) people who used paypal didn't get an order confirmation other than the PP receipt. so in the steam thread there would be someone who was, say #102, then two other people reported using PP and not getting an order #, and then another person saying they were #103
 
Eh. It's $20. That's a couple days lunch. I'll let them keep it and hope it pans out.

NES era horror game has me excited. Never played either version of Lit, so I'm stoked about that as well.

I like the teases and trying to figure out which game it is... makes it fun.

Even if it turns out to be a colossal failure, at least someone is trying to keep these games alive. I feel it's worth throwing $20 at just to support the cause.
 
They should have been more straightforward about the possibility of delays.

That said, the bonus games sound nice enough and I am willing to wait a while.

yeah, i've blown worse than $20 on a +15 to my steam library in the past

and really:
to ensure that every game that appears in the GAMEPUMP service will be available first on GOG.com as a DRM-FREE version of the game

if every game is really coming to GOG, it raises my optimism a bit. GOG has higher standards than steam right now.
 
They should have everything locked before announcing the service. They should have known about Greenlight. They should send out emails to subscribers. Other than my PayPal confirmation and the mail I sent them, there is no actual confirmation from GAMEPUMP, the company that I am a subscriber.

I'm not going to ask for a refund as self punishment.
 
Should of communicated beforehand, but not too bothered. I understand you don't want to speak too earlier and I'm guessing they communicated today when they had fully decided on their course of action to obstacles. It's also worth mentioning that there were a few internal changes in Steam today, not directly related but have made Valve a bit of a busy bee of the day.

Of course being a horror enthusiast, two bonus horror games don't bother me one bit. I will accept a built-from-the-ground-up take on the iOS LIT game, but to be honest I am disappointed it's not the WiiWare game. But I'll still play it and appreciate it being redone and updated with new content for PC release at least.

There weren't too many horror games for the NES, so the pool is limited. There were a few more than many realize, but no more than a dozen for the console. A bit hard to say without further information, however.

I'm honestly not upset about any of this though, rocky starts happen and I'm still very much interested in the service itself. And I think the incentives they threw in are a nice enough apology bonus even if they had to do some bigger reconstruction of the strategy for said bumps. Could it have been handled better? Yes, but I don't think they're badly handling it either. And I am still very much interested in the service.
 
So for summary - although $20 for 15 games (or 13 if you are a later sub) is still fine for me, here are some rather obvious amateur and dodgy issues.

- Service delayed and discussed only at the last possible moment, whilst clearly known of for sometime
- Advertised as for Steam games but now these are secondary to GOG and can be delayed vs GOG versions
- "Classic" is extremely loosely adhered to from what we know so far but is the focal point of the marketing
- Having to go through Greenlight for Steam
- "MSX not much different to NES versions" (nah nah nah fam!)
- Still failing to have an appropriate account system up in time
- No proper communication to any of the PayPal subs at all, even now.

You get what you pay for. Good thing this is throw away money on my part just to see if there can be any gems, much like gambling on a Xmas box of unknown games. Set expectations very low

If you order today, you get the two bonus games, but starting tomorrow that window closes. The $20 pricetag will last until they release the first 'proper' game.
 
I am disappointed they waited this long to say something about it. While it's still a good deal and I really do want to support a project such as this I'm tempted to cancel on principle of that alone.

I can guarantee this was not just sprung on them today and to not even mention the possibility of it until what was supposed to be day of release seems wrong to me.
 
I'll stick with it, couple bonus games are nice.

But a bit amateurish to be honest, especially from a long time industry guy like him.

For the NES Horror Game, there's a few I definitely would like it to be. The ones I'd most valiantly push for would be Sweet Home, Monster Party, and Splatterhouse: Naughty Graffiti. But I think it's more likely it's going to be something like Ghoul School or Chiller or the like, which I'm fine with too.

100% isn't Uninvited as that's already on Steam, and I doubt it'd be Maniac Mansion as you can play that in the Day of the Tentacle Remaster (even though no music, so pft).

Somewhat unrelated, but as someone who works in the software industry, things can really come down to the wire. We might not know until the day that a release is unsuitable to be put out. Seeing as this is literally their first time in the ringer, acting as publisher, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Regarding NES horror... I'm not sure if you can even call it horror, and I know it is next to impossible since this is both a Konami game and a licenced one at that - Monster In My Pocket was an awesome little game based on the brief fad of the same name.

Great platforming action, amazing fun in Coop mode, as well as brilliant music, which is how I taught myself to play guitar back in the day with other new games like the mega man series.

They previously expressed that direct NES ports were difficult, presumably because of Nintendo's IP interests and just not having the manpower to fight for their legality, but that they'd be willing to go to other versions of games gamers knew from NES, for example MSX versions of NES games.

Nope, nothing related to this. I assume he wouldn't have said NES if he didn't mean NES in this case--but it's possible it's an unlicensed NES game (as I note above, several unlicensed NES horror games are relatively good fits) so as to avoid that original concern.
 
I don't see why they couldn't port NES games, Nintendo has no legal claim to the hardware at this point. The system had no Bios, so they can't claim copyright on that, and all the patents for the device have expired. At worse they would have to scrub any trademarks from the game.

I mean you're not wrong, but what actually determines behaviour in the real world is not what the law says, but risk adversion. The question isn't would Nintendo win the case, the question is would Nintendo be likely to flip out and file a takedown, even if they'd ultimately lose that takedown. If you're a small service trying to get started, you want to avoid that kind of situation. Does it make sense spending subscriber money on lawyer retainer?

Maybe they've got it sorted out or maybe they're willing to take the risk, but my point is that if they say they can't do NES, what they mean is what I said above--would they want to take a chance knowing they could get bogged down in legal crap?

Sweet Home would be the thing I want the most, but I find it highly doubtful. It only released in Japan and though there's a fan translation I figure they'd probably re-translate it themselves instead and I doubt GamePump worked out a deal with Capcom to make it so. The only chance, and I literally mean only, I could see it happening was with Capcom's recent remaster deal they may go through with it due to Sweet Home's connection to the Resident Evil series (being the precursor for the series as the original RE was a originally a remake of Sweet Home), which they could potentially use to market the thing, but that is quite a stretch and I feel releasing Sweet Home on modern platforms isn't high on Capcom's priority list. Also while Capcom has worked with Humble several times, I don't know if they'd be buddy buddy to work that sort of deal out at the start of this service, and more so for such a bigger effort thing to be a 'bonus' game for the service.

How come you listed Megaten as published by Sega? Namco published it. Did Atlus/Sega ever acquire the rights? I mean I know they did publish the SNES version.

I get that and trust me as a gamer my entire life I know delays can happen. But to not have even mentioned it was a possibility until late in the day on when it was supposed to release seems too late to me. This just seems way too late for there to not be any warning signs at all about it.

I've decided to stick with it hoping for the best but way more cautious about the whole thing than I was before now.

Namco may have published it at the time, but given their lack of involvement in any subsequent installment, Atlus self-publishing the SFC remake, and Atlus being the developer, I assume that the relevant rightsholder is not Namco, but Sega.
 
I'm staying in. $20 is more than I spent on lunch yesterday. This whole thing will be entertaining to see how it plays out and I don't really care if I get burned since that is a very small amount of money.
