Man, some of you guys trip me out. Where were we promised photo-realism for next gen? And even if we were, I think we were promised other stuff at the beginning of previous gens(Toy Story!), and we know how that turned out...

Seriously. The graphics that these new machines will produce ARE NOT gonna suck your dick, no matter how much you want them to. Expecting a quantum leap when each successive gen leap gets smaller is unrealistic at best, and a symptom of blathering fanboyism/hype monkeyism at worst.

That said, I plan to enjoy the hype, doomsaying and all around insanity around here in the coming weeks. Times like these don't happen often, so it's good to relish it while ya can. Then I plan on picking up my 360 in November with a couple of games and enjoying the hell out of them. Ya wankers.

Edit: ^^ this is my perspective too. not only do I get a good laugh out of all this, I manage to still enjoy the games when they come out to boot ;)

OMG I am so conflicted right now - those DOA4 shots were devestatingly underwhelming but rumbling wireless controllers with shoulder buttons, Rallisport 3 and possible included hard drive and TV recording on the base model is pant-wettingly exciting! And PDO PLUS Kameo for launch??

Just let the DOA4 shots be from an early, early build that in no way resmbles what they will release. PLEASE.

That's another thing- I thought the DOA4 shots looked GREAT. Sure, the character models were lacking, but: A)It's six months from launch, at least, and B)The backgrounds looked INCREDIBLE. Honestly, if the backgrounds are representative of upper echelon 1st gen 360 titles, I'm a happy man.

Again, though, I never read where the graphics from these next gen machines were supposed to peel your eyes like grapes or whatever. Think about it: 8 bit to 16 bit = huge jump in nature of games. 16 to 32/64 = quite possibly the only "quantum" leap we're gonna see. Going from 2d to 3d is a feeling that will never be repeated in gaming, probably. We should quit expecting it to be repeated, IMO. Then of course, 32/64 to current gen = not quite as impressive. I expect the returns to diminish even further. Honestly, what else can devs DO?

I agree. It's going to be hard to beat the 2D--->3D type transitions we've seen in the past without some new kind of tech coming out. I'm not sure how much textures, etc. can be improved upon at this point... I think the biggest things are increase in RAM, etc. for more characters on screen at a time. I'm just not sure how much more truly realistic we can get under the current software/hardware confines.
