Games that you just don't understand the appeal of

dark souls. i understand the approach, but the controls are terrible, graphics suck and its hard as fuck.

i rather play viewtiful joe on hard than playing dark souls.

Most Japanese games with an cute anime art style - just doesn't do anything for me.

Also games with ridiculous button combo's to remember for fighting mechanics - no thank you.

Surprised by all the Dark Souls comments. I didn't realise how polarising it was for most people. For me it's the most realistic depiction of medieval combat that I know of hence why (for me at least) one of the best games out there. Combined with the oppressive atmosphere just makes me want to push through to find the next enemy to best!

I can't think of a single game that I can't at least see why other people may like it. Even with the games I hate most I can still understand why others may enjoy them. I think most answers here or more "I don't like it, how can they like it?" or the opinion was made without even fully understanding the game.

Can't believe how many people are saying Minecraft though, is it really that hard to see that some people just like being creative and building things? That game can be either the simplest or one of the most complex games you've ever played depending on how you approach it. It can take very little skill, or an insane amount. You can build a dirt hut or you can build a working version of a game inside of the game, working scoreboard and all.

Final Fantasy 7

I simply cannot get emotionally attached to coloured rectangles attached to other rectanges. I get the nostalgia element for alot of people but it's a game I have never been able to get into and I love every other Final Fantasy before 12

If they remake it with relatable graphics........ I will eat words

none of this makes sense.

You liked every FF before 12 except for 7 because of those reasons?
and if you are waiting for a HD remake so that you can like a game then you are doing it wrong.

I kind of agree but then Sengoku Rance is an awesome game.

A lot of people in this thread have a very limited ability to see perspectives outside of their own. I agree with these same people that a lot of the mentioned games have no appeal personally, but is it really that hard to see why others might enjoy them?

I hear you, but just like you don't like games with ridiculous button combo's to remember, many people think a game is slow or had bad combat without them. I appreciate what Dark Souls has to offer as much as I appreciate Bayonetta. Not everyone can do that I guess.

On the other hand, the fact that you actually have to get decent at the game to beat it, probably has a lot to do with it too. Definitely not the norm for modern games. It's probably quite a shock to people not used to difficult games.

This seems to just be people listing genres they don't like, without taking a step back and thinking why other people might like them. Look, I don't find FPS that exciting but I could see why someone would. Ditto for sports games, or western "AAA". The only genre I don't really understand the appeal of are MOBAs, since I don't know much about them and everything I've heard sounds extremely unappealing (such as the player population).

You people really don't see why some people might prefer a more cute, anime influenced art style in a game? Especially in a day and age where everything tries to out-grimdark the last big game to come out?

Or why some people might prefer a really challenging, obtuse game like Dark Souls in a day and age when games love to lead you by gigantic arrows everywhere and pop up tutorials every few seconds?

Or why others might enjoy turn-based gaming where they can relax and contemplate their move set and not have to worry about reflexes?

...Basically none?

There are plenty of games that don't click with me, but I'm almost always able to accept some answer to the question of "Why does anyone like this?" Very, very rarely do I conclude that a game is actually unlikeable and that all the people who seem to enjoy it are delusional or pulling one over on me.

Well, here's three people who actually read/understood the topic, at least. I'd look for more, but it's starting to get painful to sift through this mass grave of failed reading comprehension.

Indeed. A lot of incredibly obtuse responses, which sadly was expected. Many need to reread the OP and topic.

For me, the question lies in: Is there a game or genre to which if someone gave to me, say, the top 2-3 answers as to why they like it, but yet I still absolutely cannot fathom as to their reasoning?

If the answer is yes, then I suppose I could post a (personally) shameful answer to the thread.

I have my distastes in certain games or genres. But I honestly cannot say there's something out there that I simply cannot comprehend its existence. It's all entertainment and that means it's all encompassing.

EDIT: And for full disclosure here, I've played and enjoyed a TON of different genres. From game show games, to hardcore flight sims, to MMOs, to wrestling and sports games, to roguelikes, to text adventures and MUDs, to music games. Western, eastern, janky, indie, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA titles, etc etc.

I can honestly say that I understand why some folks can really get into nearly any/all of these games.

You can accept that people like something but not understand why they actually like it, you know.

Tedium-simulators, AKA The Sims, Animal Crossing, Minecraft, Monster Hunter. I just don't get it, and can't fathom how anyone else would. If I want to grind, I'll live my actual life. I don't have to seek it out in digital form.

Also, Rockstar's games. Grand Theft Auto, Bully, Man Hunt, etc. The content matter feels like it should only appeal to the mentally ill, yet they are so very popular. Crimes, drugs, mutilation, murder, etc., and this is supposed to be entertainment? I worry about my fellow man.

I just couldn't get into the game. I think it's because of the graphics. Alot of peope I know are advocates for that game and tell me how good the story is but I just can't get into it. I think if the characters were a little more relatable (visibly) then i'd probably be able to stick with it.

I know it can't be a 'bad' game, because of the love it gets, but I just can't see the appeal of it as it stands now

I'll explain why people like Monster Hunter to those who don't get it:

- The actual mechanics of the gameplay are really fun and satisfying once you learn them
- it's Great Boss Fights: The Game
- it has amazingly fun co-op

We aren't playing it for the 'grinding'.

The appeal is because it is a fantastic game. And the graphics? Surely you realizes that the game was pretty much ground breaking at the time on ps1. The pre-rendered backgrounds during travel are downright impressive. Excluding FF9 I cant think of any console RPG that sticks in my mind so well from the immersion. Everything in that game clicks just right for a great experience.
Music- Fantastic
Pacing- Fantastic
Characters- Great
Battle system- Fantastic
Story- Good.

What else are you looking for in an RPG? Especially one that old.

Threads like this make me pray no one from the games industry is reading it and taking notes. on how to make better games. Seriously.

LBP and Minecraft?
People can't understand the appeal of them? Really?
They don't understand the appeal of games that let you create something?

It's like not understand the appeal a box of crayons and paper has to kids.

I really weep for some people, it's pretty scary some of the stuff being said here.

I don't get FPS games that don't have tons of baddies, weapons, branching/secret paths. Most modern shooters seem highly repetitive and boring to me.

Zelda

I just cannot find it appealing at all. The style has never suited my taste in any shape or form so far.

With that said, I feel like I'm committing sin.

I can find some appeal in MOBAs, but I really don't understand why so many watch it.

Gee, do you go camping or hiking outdoors much and not have music playing?

No, I don't camp or hike. I do go jogging everywhere with music. People really see a lack of music in Dark Souls as a positive thing?

Its definitely not the same, nor is it the same kind of difficulty as those games you cited but really, would it be a realisitic world, not just a gamified world, if you couldn't make those kind of mistakes?

If they really wanted to make a realistic game, one death would be the end of the game. Wouldn't be very fun though. Just like it's not fun to have nearly every path leading to a 100% certainty of death. Or having to farm rats for hours so you can stand a chance against Ornstein and Smough.

For the life of me, I can't understand Uncharted. Overrated characters and dialog, bullet sponge enemies, mind-numbingly linear design, shallow mechanics, ridiculous encounter design due to quick regen health, pointless platforming, overuse of pointless cutscenes (does every pipe need to break?), forced QTE fist fights, too many checkpoints ruining tension.... it's the Transformers of video games.

League of Legends

I tried it and didn't care for it, but it literally has absorbed my friends lives and I don't understand why.

The Souls series

I played Demon souls and watched a friend play Dark souls, and it just felt/looked like a clunky frustrating mess. Imma give dark souls another chance next month though when its free on XBL.

I've enjoyed Dark Souls because it's an evolution of one of my favorite series(King's Field). Since they're not making those anymore this is the closest I can get. The atmosphere and exploration are very satisfying, even though some of the bosses are damn tough. I don't really like the "git gud" fanbase as they seem snobby.

Military Shooters: Why? No need to learn the map layouts if there is not a Quad Damage pickup that respawns approx every minute. Hell, there are no pickups AT ALL! Zero reason to move around the map.
