Games that you just don't understand the appeal of

Oh this'll be good

All MOBAS lol dota smite, etc
Japanese (anime style) RPGs I hate that colorful cute pandering bullshit cliche shit to hell. A few year ago I would have been aboard that train liking it.

Monster hunter I don't know why I have one of them. So boring grind grind

Borderlands I like the 2nd one but I forced myself to beat it near the end.

I hate MMOs. Never liked them. Thought they were a money pit of waste. I did like RO when it first coming out in the early 2000s.

All Nippon Ichi games and especially start RPGs. Why did I buy all the disgeas, phantom braves, makai kingdoms, rhapsodys, la puchlle tactics games. "Who wants to grind the game" let's make level 999999999999 characters. The fuck is wrong with me. I do like the prinny games though.

Mine craft.

I think I'm starting to just get tired of gaming right now honestly.

Ill agree with everyone with minecraft. a lot of my friends were really into it with the ps3 release, but i just didnt see the fun in it. Same thing with League of Legends, it tried it and did not find it fun at all (im holding back from saying MOBAs in general simply because LoL is the only one i have played)

Japanese games. Always weird with dumb plots and outdated gameplay.

Borderlands. The first one was incredibly boring. No desire to play the second.

Generic games with anime-looking characters. I know a friend who will literally buy any game that has anime girls in it. Doesn't matter if the game is good or not, he's sold on that appeal alone. All of those PS3 rpgs that were not critically well-regarded. All those beat-em-ups, etc. Generally BAD games, but people buy them because theyr'e 'japanese' with 'anime' characters/girls.

I'm not talking about games that are actually *GOOD* that happen to have anime girls in them. Just BAD games whose ONLY selling point is anime girls.
Amen brother amen couldn't agree more

Metal Gear Solid.

Bad stories, abysmal writing, clunky gameplay.

I don't get it. There are much better stealth games out there. I'd rather play a bad Splinter Cell game than any MGS game.

You don't understand the appeal?... but you mention it repeatedly throughout your whole post...

TLOU

I liked it more when it was called The Walking Dead and had characters I gave a shit about. Really don't understand the praise that game gets.

Because it's better written and more fun to play than The Walking Dead ;)

the walking dead is fantastic though

I don't get the appeal of WoW. I guess I can see that people like the communal experience and long term progression, I just think the art style, gameplay, and lore are all really bad.

People are confusing "don't see the appeal of" with "I don't like this."

I don't like tactical RPGs, but I definitely see the appeal of them

MOBA's...
I just don't get it. Wouldn't it get boring after awhile?

I also don't get Baldur's Gate or other pre KOTOR Bioware CRPG's either. Bought most of them from GOG but just can't figure out what's so great about them. I guess I had to be there when they were new to really appreciate them.

I guess the appeal now for them is more nostalgic. I'm that way with the old Wing Commander games so I get it.

I tried to think of some examples but I really couldn't. Even if I don't like a particular game I can usually see why other people might. Real time strategy for example. I hate the hectic feeling and constant pressure of having to take so many actions quickly, and I really hate micromanaging in any game. I'm not much of a competitive player, so it's obvious it's a poor fit for me. But other people love those sorts of things and it provides them a competitive environment for them to enjoy it.

The only way I think I could ever not see the appeal is if it was a truly horrible game that almost no one liked. Something like Ride To Hell: Retribution. But even in that case someone might enjoy laughing at how stupid it is, so that kind of fails too. I think people should keep an open mind about these things and let others enjoy what they like without thinking they have the 'wrong' opinion.

I've never understood the appeal of GTA. I only ever have fun with these games during the first 30 minutes of free-roaming. The characters are completely unlikeable and not in a good way, the stories are either boring or annoying, mission design and controls are often rather mediocre and the whole game just feels soulless. Like it's been assembled by businessmen ticking off every box of what they assume 12-16 year-old males think is cool, rather than by people who had a cohesive artistic vision.

Funnily enough, I love Sleeping Dogs which, on paper, isn't too different from GTA. However, it just does most of the things GTA does wrong for me right.

FIFA/Pro Evolution Soccer.

Love football, been an Arsenal supporter for 30 years, love the sport in a broader sense too.

FIFA/PES just do absolutely nothing for me. I hate how "accurate" the game is too when it comes to decision making, the actual sport isn't that definitive and some of the best topics are about decisions made during games. These games remove that blurred line and make it boring.

I don't understand Hatsune Miku's popularity, games or otherwise.

Really kawaii JRPG's.

I can't deal with the childlike characters, tween aesthetics and shrill voices.

And this to go along with that. I love jrpgs and tons of Japanese games, but this loli/'cute little girls' trend in the past 5 or so years is something I just don't understand.

TLOU

While I enjoyed the game, I don't really get all the GOTY awards and acclaim it got. It's just okay.

I agree that The Walking Dead had more interesting characters. I didn't care about any of the characters in TLOU.

ITT: people list games they don't like, not games they don't understand the appeal of.

MOBAs. You don't understand the appeal of MOBAs? Do you not understand the appeal of sports in general? It's supposed to be repetitive so you can master skills down to the detail and pull off precise maneuvers.

I don't like MOBAs. But I can understand the appeal. I like RTSs and FPSs (and IRL golf, basketball, ultimate), and it's the same basic appeal.

I understand the appeal of most games, even if they don't all appeal to me.

The closest I came to not understanding was Minecraft. Then I played it enough to get hooked for six months straight.

EVE Online.

I'm capable of understanding the appeal of games I don't even like but EVE Online is on another level. It just seems like TOO much.

Sleeping Dogs.

I don't quite get the appeal of the game. It was very boring and I had to stop about 2 hours in.

1) scripted handholding chase sequences
2) hilariously bad and overly simplistic driving sequences
3) ridiculously easy and formulaic combat
4) snoreworthy open world requests

But it gets lots of praise!

Assassins Creed. To me it is:
1. Do this
2. Do that
3. Do this again
4. Do that twice

Rinse and repeat. Not enough variety or feeling of increasing skill.

Marvel vs Capcom 3

as a fighter game fan, that game spitted on everything I liked in the series, yet is liked by almost all the community

Call of Duty, Sport Games like Fifa, PES, etc and MOBAs come to my mind

Japanese games, except Mario and Zelda.

Aside from the Souls games I seriously fucking hate japanese games so much.

I like you.

Really kawaii JRPG's.

I can't deal with the childlike characters, twee aesthetics and shrill voices.

This fucking shit...

Ugh.

For me, Bethesda's two big ones, Fallout and Elder Scrolls.

Elder Scrolls games are about this big open world, but they always feel empty and boring to me. The combat is terrible in Elder Scrolls, and really impressive stuff (like killing dragons in Skyrim), get repeated so much that it becomes dull and repetitive. They put such emphasis on exploration, but it ends up being empty expanses punctuated by cookie cutter dungeons and occassional towns/points of interest where something interesting happens. But the aforementioned combat is a bore, and exploration isn't appealing, so I don't get it.

I can't quite say the same criticism of Fallout, since I only played NV for about an hour. But that hour made me quit. It seemed like Elder Scrolls with guns and a brown wasteland. I hate shooters and didn't like the Elder Scrolls, so I didn't get it. Plus, when the tutorial lady's wolf jumped in front of me when I shot, and they both killed me, I respawned in an area far from where I was. Made me quit. I don't get what people see in these games, there are better Open World games, RPGs, and FPSs.

Monster Hunter series...I don't get the grind for stuff to be used to make stuff to kill Big Stuff for rare stuff to make better stuff.... I feel like I'd be more productive playing an actual MMO, getting to endgame, run instances to get gear to go raiding.
