Games with the worst camera........

What game(s) have the worst cameras? I mean games where the camera is so bad it totally ruins the experience. For me it was Kingdom Hearts; it has the worst camera this gen. It is so bad that during the first few hours I felt nauseous just by moving the character(Sora) around. The game has a great story, amazing art and gorgeous graphics, I can stand the wonky controls and the shallow gameplay(loads of button mashing) but I just can't stand the camera. IT IS AWFUL!!! I fail to see how a developer could release a game with a camera that bad. You can't adjust the camera when you're locked on an enemy, sometimes the camera jumps abruptly, putting you in an awkward position, Try making a simple jump from one platform to another and the camera will swing suddenly; it made worse by those sidekicks trying to get in your face ALL THE TIME.

If the camera isn't improved in Kingdom Hearts 2 I don't think I'll buy it.

Any other games out there that have retarded cameras?
 
The demo in Sonic Heroes convinced me not to get the game in part due to the camera.

In fact, I never even went back to replay that demo.
 
I picked up Kingdom Hearts recently and I couldn't agree more. Keeping the camera in a good position is like a mini game in itself.
 
Probably not the worst this gen, but i remember Super Mario Sunshine camera being horrible. So much so thats it about the only thing im going to remember about the game
 
Mario Sunshine had an awesome camera. I actually tend to prefer camera systems that allow and require full user management. I suppose it could be a problem if you preferred to take a hands-off approach to the camera, though.

and btw this and LOZ's camera system. Nintendo has locked down 2 of the best in game camera systems possible. Other devs can only aspire.
 
Why am I not suprised to see Mario Sunshine listed in this thread =\ Really...do you guys even play 3rd party platformers??
 
Dino Crisis 3 was pretty freakin bad. :lol. You could actually be fighting something and you wouldn't see either your own character or the dinosaur you were fighting on screen. So funny.

I agree that the camera in MGS2 and MGS3 was pretty bad. Awesome games. But I would really like to see where I'm going thanks.

For me, it's gotta be any game that requires that you constantly have to adjust the camera in order to see where you're going. The worst offenders that I can think of offhand are SMS, Ratchet & Clank:GC (never played the other two), and GTA:SA.

Any game like that should have the camera at least attempt to stay behind your character, yet way too much time is spent on the second analog stick making sure you don't walk off a cliff that you just can't see or something.
 
Super Mario Sunshine

Loved the game, but the camera did suck, and it wasn't just Pinna Park.

I doubt it's worst this gen, it just sticks out in my mind for some reason over the other games I've played in the last few years. I actually found Kingdom Hearts reasonably managable, although still far from perfect.
 
I LOVE Sunshine's camera. They really should have left in the choice of a more autonomous version in (as they were working on one) for those who would prefer that, but for me it was almost perfect.

I have absolutely no idea how the camera was allowed to stay the same on the one shine though, in Pinna Park. Luckily, there's another way to get that shine if you really want to break the game over that particular task, a way I actually did straight away, not realising I was supposed to go the other way.

Dino Crisis 3 you are just stuck with whatever the game gives you.

The only time I had quibbles with the camera was during the FURY (flame guy) fight. Not being able to control where the camera was in that fight was a lot problematic.
 
I loved the camera in sunshine. It was 99% in the players control so the way i see it - If you think the camera was bad that was your own doing! ;P

Maybe some players didn't realise that the camera was solid and therefore couldn't move through structures so you therefore had to zoom in and around an object at times.
 
I haven't played Dino Crisis 3 but in my list Ninja Gaiden wins hands down when it comes to the camera. With that camera trial-and-error gameplay gets a new meaning.

I love these games but the camera can be very flawed. Shooting zombies off screen... unseen arrow shooters/spinning demons. Bad camera+views...

The automatic camera HAS been improved for KH2. Also, you can control it now with the second analog stick.

MGS2's camera was great, though. The vast majority of the time, it kept the entire scene in view and never prevented you from easily detecting the location of various enemies. Also, the game rarely used "overhead" angles.

Now, MGS3 was an entirely different story. The larger areas really didn't work well with the MGS style camera. It was functional, but it did feel as if you were being limited by the camera. Thankfully, MGS3-Subsistance will completely fix this problem. Still, I don't know how anyone could say "this thread is over" in referece to MGS3. The thread was over when I mentioned Dino Crisis 3. If you don't agree, you haven't played it. :D

What was wrong with Primal's camera? It was a free panning, right stick based camera that worked well. It didn't allow you to look up and down while moving, but you could rotate left and right without a problem. The camera was just fine here.

As bad as the original camera is, it becomes second nature with time and the only time where it is consistantly a problem is during the second boss fight

Agreed. Only the second boss fight really presents a problem for the camera. Once you've learned the game, the default camera is just fine.

What the hell? Did they change it for the US version? The camera in Ghost Hunter functions just like Splinter Cell or other simliar 3rd person games. You can freely move the camera all over while moving around and the combat mode works like Splinter Cell's as well.

I think everyone in this thread needs to go find a cheap copy of Dino Crisis 3 and experience true camera hell. You aren't going to find a worse camera on the market. It completely obscures what you need to do and completely prevents you from playing the game. It is the ONLY game I've ever played where I found myself unable to continue playing due to the camera. I've been able to overcome camera issues in every single other game, but DC3 truly is the single most broken camera system ever created.

Well, like I said, DC3 is the ONLY game that I ever gave up on due to the camera. It was so bad and so useless that I simply could find no fun in playing onward. The game itself DID seem interesting and I bet a good camera could have resulted in a great game even, but it was just so bad that I could never enjoy any of the good parts. I ended up spending time standing with my back against the wall and firing in first person.
 
THIS IS THE PROBLEM
People mention SMS, Ratchet and Clank, Zelda, and GTA because they don't understand that in a free roaming game, you need to be able to place the camera where you want it. Mario 64 was linear to a degree, much more so than Super Mario Sunshine, but it still had the c-button camera moves for when you did need the camera in a new angle.

You're not going to get an automatic camera in games like those that works because no camera can read your mind and place itself where you need it.

well, that's actually my point the camera is horrid, But I get used to it and found that the game was very good, I even finished it 2 times.
such a shame capcom give us the shaft after the debacle of DC3.

Goddamn, I absolutely gave up on the game after this section in the amusement park world where you had to climb this fence thing where you can swing from one side to the other. That was, by far, the worst camera I have ever had to deal with.

Yeah they really messed up there. I had to settle getting that star by getting to the highest point of the level and waterjet-gliding to the top.
