Games you remember, names you don't

I'm trying to remember the name of a fighting game i saw in about 1994.
It was a 2D fighter with up to 4 fighters on screen.
Some stages were single plain and others were multiplain i.e. you could hop from one plane to another to avoid energy blasts
One of the things i remember about it was that you could charge up an energy ball/blast and fire it off and depending how long you charged it it would be greater in size. If your opponent charged up their energy ball longer than yours the two would collide and the large ball would overpower the smaller one, though it would lose some of it's size depending on how large the smaller ball was, and carry on
The variety of characters seemed quite large and very anime inspired.

That sounds like a DBZ game but the only 4 player arcade fighter I can find is Knuckle Heads and there aren't energy blasts in that.

Ok, this game was possibly IBM or apple computers, played it sometime around 1986 - 1987 maybe. Game was an adventure type game, seems like it had static screens and an input prompt to interact with the game. One screen had a stumping the middle of the path, possibly a purple stump, and the solution for the screen was to input 'kick stump'. He gme maybe had a vampire or bats on one screen.

Other games played around ths tie frame where dr j vs bird and karateka.

Looks like you already got this answer in 2004, but is it Adventure in Serenia? Similar art?

Edit: Looks like you tried again in 2007 :) I sure hope we can figure it out for you

No it was a console game, saw it playing on screen in a game shop when i was on holiday in Malaysia as a kid. Stood there for like 15 mins thinking "man this looks awesome... complicated to play but awesome". What lead me to believe it was not a DBZ game, even though the characters were DBZ-esque was one character who seemed to take on a tree/root-like form when performing a sort of underground teleportation across the screen

Nope definitely had energy blasts

Perhaps, for clarification i should state i was there over the holidays so the end of 93 and beginning of 94

I hope so too. I checked adventure in serenia again and the stump solution is not in the game walkthrough. Pretty sure that's not it, but yes I've been looking for the answer for a very long time.

If it's the one I was thinking of, it's Suikoden Tierkreis. It's not time-traveling, though, it's a sort of multi-verse.

The silver-haired girl's other-world counterpart comes to your world several times to help out and warn you about what's happening over there. Your party never does travel to another world, though they are impacted by them and the main character gets visions of the other world(s).

Decent game, though not nearly as good as the core Suikodens.

i had forgotten about this thread, and YES! that was the game, thank you very much.

Is it similar in art style? There are a lot of games in that style if it is, if not we at least know not to look at them.

Edit: I found one with vampires and a stump, but you don't kick it. You do uncover a message that says "Knock Here" on it though.

Transylvania

The sequel (The Crimson Crown) has a lot of stumps too, but I don't think you interact with any of them.

Yeah art style is similar to that, possibly a little newer game, I recall a few more simultaneous colors than that but very reminiscent overall. I appreciate any and all help.

According to Wikipedia
"In 1982, this game was released for the Apple II, Atari 8-bit family, Commodore 64 and Commodore 128. It was later re-released for the Apple Macintosh in 1984, then the Amiga, Atari ST and DOS in 1985"

So I wouldn't be surprised if each version looked a bit different and gradually got better looking. Below are some screens from the same scene on older releases

It also got an iPhone re-release so you can always check it out there. The only videos I can seem to find online are for the Apple II, nothing for the later release.

Edit: I spoke to soon. Here is an Amiga video

And a screen from the Atari ST version

This is looking very familiar but the main difference is I know the solution was 'kick stump' then there was a poof afterwards. Also for some reason I'm thinking the main colours on ths screen were purple and green, the green was more of a sea foam colour.

Trying to remember this PC game I played at my friends about 10 years ago. Think it was a point and click adventure, there was a junkyard and I think the antagonist was this robot who lived there, might have been a robot snake. Also i remember there being a harmonica. Not sure why I though of this all of a sudden but now it's driving me crazy that I can't remember what it was.

Is it "Down in the Dumps"?

So... here is a weird one.

I remember buying alpha access to an independent on development 2D space combat game.

It was something alone the lines of SPAZ and gratuitous space battles. I think with a lot of emphasis on personalizing your ships and with direct control on battle.

I bought it after watching a WTF is video from total halibut.

It wasn't a steam or desura thing, just a direct from the developers site purchase, and i can't find it.

Any help?

PS: I found it with some googleing:

Starsector, formely know as Starfarer

I've been looking for the name of a game I loved as a kid. I played it on the macintosh (around 2002 maybe), and you were some kind of fly/bug flying around this open but linear map.

Anyone have a clue? It was neither of the Bugdom games.

That sounds like the CGA palette.

I'd call that more a blue than a green, but it's certainly got a greenish tinge.

I'm looking for a gameboy game. You played as a dinosaur, I believe in the artwork on the cardridge he was purple. It was a 2d sidescroller and sometimes you went down ramps to get across gaps. Also you had to avoid bolders from time to time. I don't remember much else. When I'm searching for it on the internet I always end up getting the dinosaur game inspired by the Disney movie.

I remember a game on windows 95 floppy disc. You played as a shaceship which was speeding forward down a path made out of loads of blocks, you had to jump from left to right to stay on the path and the speed of the ship increased as the level progressed to ramp up the difficulty.

Can't remember the name.

Skyroads.

Boomer's Adventure in Asmik World? I loved that game growing up.

I'm looking for a scene from this western game, where this girl gets a hatchet thrown into the back of her head.

The game was probably Gun, or Red Dead Revolver. I don't remember which.

Sprite-based arcade game that took place in a jungle or something.

Protagonists were regular human guys, sidescroller.

Only prominent feature I remember: A boss that was a living statue that got a new head every time it got defeated.

OK, this thread saved my sanity once before, which is why I hang around to do my best to likewise help others. I've got another one, and this could be a right bugger to identify. I'm trying to track down one of the first games I ever remember playing. It was round a neighbour's house, and I know I played Chuckie Egg round there too, but I'm not sure on what machine. It was most likely to be either an Acorn Electron or other BBC machine, a Spectrum, or a C64. The following details are hazily remembered, so don't take them as gospel.

The game itself I'd describe as a kind of 2d side scrolling adventure with puzzles (find key, find the right door kind of thing). I think you played a knight, and it took place in a castle. I think there were two floors on each screen (like an upper and lower level, on some screens you could move between them via stairs) and doors in the background that you'd use to move to new screens (probably by pressing up). Kind of a Prince of Persia setup, but obviously more basic. I remember just getting hopelessly stuck at one point, finding the door I needed to go through but having no key, then finding a key but unable to relocate the door.

And that's the lot. Not much to go on, I know, but any help would be much appreciated.

Probably way off since I'm not familiar with games on those older systems but I'll suggest Dark Castle: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KCkbp4wurW0

That's a video of it on the Mac as that version but it was ported to many other systems like the Commodore 64. There's also a sequel called Beyond Dark Castle.

Thanks for the suggestion but that's a bit too advanced. We're probably talking about a 1984 release date at the latest. It'd be more zoomed in than that, blockier and for some reason I have a memory of a mainly green palette, but that could just be a greeny haze of nostalgia. Thanks again though!

One of the Magic Knight games?

Depending on the graphics card in your computer at the time the game may have used a different graphics mode, i.e here's a sample shot of the game in CGA which is purple and cyan shades:

A game I remember playing on the original GameBoy. It was Japanese only, but the in-game text was in English. It was a top-down shooter with two characters, a male and female. The male had more health and you could switch between them at will by pausing. If you died as one you continued as the other. It had no save-system but a password system, 'laser' was the password for the second level. You had three weapons, a rapid-firing one, a shotgun and a bomby-thing which could shoot over walls. There were dark-rooms which could be lit-up by shooting a flashing thing. Some doors could be shot-open some needed keys. Each level had a boss. I think I still have it, but as I don't understand Japanese I would still like to know what it's called.

I'm going to rattle off a bunch of games that *might* fit the bill:

Control a Knight:
The Magic Knight titles as mentioned earlier
Sir Fred
Future Knight

Multiple floors and staircases:
Olli and Lissa
Scooby Doo
Count Duckula in No Sax Please: We're Egyptian

I'm sure I'll come up with more if I keep thinking.

One of the Magic Knight games?

I don't think so, but as I say, I was young and the memory is hazy. It could be. Last time I searched for this game that was the closest I got. Thanks though!

I think whatever I played was less cartoony than that, had less character and was more basic in gameplay. Also I don't think the background was plain black, I remember a wall pattern. The neighbours who owned the machine weren't really 'gamers', I wonder if it was some cheapo pack in game?

That one might have been a bundle with a "make your own game" softwares back in the day, but not really sure: A fighting game, comic style. You choose little dogs and cats (might have been puppies), that can transform into (dog and cat) robots.

Ikari no Yousai 2, AKA Fortified Zone 2.

Not sure if this is too vague but I'll give it a shot.

It's a PS1 RTS. You pick a from a roster of characters and they are able to summon different monsters and spells to fight for them against another summoner. Some of the summons I remember specifically were fire walls and black knights and white knights.

An arcade game from the early 90s, or late 80s. You were some kind of wizard. It was a 2D side scroller from left to right. You would battle enemies in each stage and your character would eventually level up. I remember making it to stage 2, and level 2 for my character I think. I think your character was holding some kind of staff in his hands. That's all I remember from it. Sorry I know this isn't much to go on.

It was at an arcade far away from my house where I would go very rarely. I saw the game once and never saw it again. I've been trying to figure out what game it was for 20 years. I haven't done intensive research or anything but it's been on my mind since then.

Were there cards involved? Could be Magic the Gathering Battlemage.

Could be Magician Lord?

Could be Magician Lord?

I just checked on youtube footage from magician lord and I don't think that's it. I could be wrong though it's been 20 years. But I remember the game being less a platformer and more just going forward and blasting enemies with your staff. Thanks for trying. :)

Hmm.
Cadash is my final guess, has a Mage class.

PC game, freely distributed online, early 2000s or so. Sidescroller where you play a very small stark-white humanoid. Heavy emphasis on exploration, I don't think death was possible but not sure. One level had huge flowers. Killer chiptunes. I feel like there was a "P" in the name but could be wrong.

This sounds familiar, might have been made in Game Maker. Unless you're taking about Knytt.
