Gamespot best and worst of 2004..

And Master Chief worshippers everywhere are crying and throwing fits!

I personally have no problem with GS' choice for XBox GOTY... but I'm apparently in the minority.

I don't have a problem with this either. I can honestly say I've spent more time with Burnout 3 than Halo 2 thusfar.

I'll just say that this is an odd choice, at best.

But really, it reinfoces my perception that GS is aloof and inept.

Wow... horrible choice.

BO3 is a great game, but not better than Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden, or KotOR2. Not by a long shot.

But it's obvious, EA BOUGHT THEM.

*sigh*

So, does this EA boycott / fast / hunger strike mean that no EA game can ever win any kind of award or be thought to be fun ever again?

I just want to get my facts straight.

The whole list was aloof at best, well, except for PS2 and PC. But hey, they love PS2 and PC.

I like Paper Mario, but MP2 is better overall.
Astroboy is great , but pales to Metroid Zero Mission.
Burnout for Xbox? WTF? I don't even own Halo 2 or an Xbox and that seems wrong.

Dunno what these guys are thinking. Even Play would have more sane picks for 2004, and I'm sure they'd be WAY out there in Crazyland, too.

Isn't it a matter of opinion, anyway? Why are people getting their panties all up in a bunch because Halo 2 isn't "el numero uno"?

Here's the problem with choosing Burnout 3 as best Xbox game: Sure it's a great game, but what about it makes it the best Xbox game?

It's a multiplatform release, the Xbox Live interface isn't particularly great (hobbled by the EA system), the Xbox version has no exclusive content, and it only looks marginally better than its PS2 counterpart. In fact, some prefer the PS2 graphics (see sparks controversy).

Really, that is a pretty odd choice. Unless they were dead set on honoring Burnout 3 somehow and decided to squeeze it into the Xbox category.

Now that's an argument that I can at least respect, as opposed to charges of GS being "bought" by EA or them just being flat-out wrong.

Personally, I enjoyed playing Burnout 3 than any other XBox release this year, exclusive or no. I thought that it looked really damned good and that it was one of the more accessible (as in easy to get into, regardless of skill level) games that I've seen come down the pike in some time.

There have been questions about Halo 2's single-player campaign and Ninja Gaiden's overall accessibility. I could have seen Riddick winning GOTY, I guess, even though FPS games aren't my thing.

Dare I say, SpikeTV was better than Gamespot this year?

It sure is looking that way. Scary, really. But then, GS seemed to have it out for Halo 2 from the get-go. Their minimal coverage (compare to MGS and GTA) and disapproving tone of all things Halo (they called I Love Bees a "marketing hoax") and it wasn't hard to see this coming. I'm acually surprised they didn't give it biggest disappointment, though to even nominate it for that is just fucking crazy.

I'm pretty sure the reason BO3 won is because GS does all their awards based upon the score that the games got. Burnout got a 9.5, Halo 2 got a 9.4, and GTA got a 9.6. Ergo, GTA wins PS2, BO3 wins Xbox. BO3 would have probably won on GC, since it's higher than PM2 (9.2) and MP2 (9.1).

It's a really, really flawed way of doing awards, though. It pretty much ensures that your GOTY awards are based upon limited playtime AND on individual biases from reviewers (Gerstmann reviewed BO3, Kasavin reviewed Halo 2). Hell, Gerstmann praises BO3's rubber-band AI in his review, which I consider to be game-breaking later on.

Jeez, i liked burnout 1 more than burnout 3. If I played all the games coming out this year for the xbox it wouldnt make my top 20.

Its also implying that paper mario is better than every xbox release, since burnout 3 came out on all systems. I would say they have it out for xbox this year with the great releases it had.

I cant believe they didnt give it to ninja gaiden if they were not going to give it to halo 2. Cant say as I see where there coming from. Oh well, they think amped is pretty average too, what can you do.

BO3 did not come out on Gamecube.

And if I'm correct about my selection proceedure (and I'm pretty sure they did it in the past, which is how MechAssault won GOTY for xbox), GTA will be GOTY due to its score.

So, can we say Red Cloak was right?

Awards like these are a matter of opinion so Gamespot is free to pick whatever games they like.

Having said that, I think in the future I won't put much credence in Gamespot's reviews or their opinions. They just don't seem to be on the same wavelength as me when it comes to games.

good gosh, what horrible picks. i cannot imagine them putting together a worse list. ekk.

imagine if they put BO3 as the gamecube best title (which its definately not), its the same thing.

sometimes i think Gamespot has a personal thing against Microsoft and they try to do these little subtle things to it as their way of knocking it, but trying to do it in a non obvious way.

Yeah I am sure gamespot has something personal against Microsoft. Geez, and you think Nintendo fanboys is alone of being rabid?

Well, it's a very good multiplatform game and none of the Xbox exclusives were better. PS2 had better exclusives. Simple, though probably tough to swallow for Xbox fans since this was supposed to be their big year.

Was KOTOR2 out in time for consideration in these awards?

[EDIT: Removed Gamecube reference since BO3 didn't come out for the Cube.]

Since we're talking about Gamespot's awards and their scores...

Gamespot's Xbox Game of the Year Nominees

Halo 2 : 9.4
Ninja Gaiden: 9.4
Burnout 3: 9.5
Chronicles of Riddick: 9.4
Rallisport Challenge 2: 9.3

Gamespot's PS2 Game of the Year Nominees

Burnout 3: 9.5
GTA:SA: 9.6
MGS 3:Snake Eater: 8.7
Ratchet and Clank:UYA: 8.7
Winning Eleven Soccer: 9.1

Yeah, rough year for the Xbox :)

lollers. nice try troll.

I just think it's an uninspired pick. the xbox had plenty of highly rated titles. GTA was a respectable pick, and PM2 was pretty easy for the lackluster Cube.

:lol Now who is trolling? Prime 2 and Pikmin 2 would've been reasonable choices here.

So like I said, none of the Xbox exclusives were rated better than Burnout 3, or even matched it in terms of score.

that was the joke! But I'd still pick PM2. I'm just saying, that console had a bunch of games near that score, if someone wants to claim "the xboxen's year" or what have you, I think they'd have more reason than most. It just stinks that they chose BO3, that's all. No big deal-o.

I'm more bent outta shape about GTA:SA than about Burnout 3 (which is still inferior to Outrun 2). GTA:SA is less good than Vice City. Practically everything they added made the game even more of a pain in the ass to play.

Yeah, rough year for the Xbox :)

Average score from Gamespot for Xbox's big games 9.4
Average score from Gamespot for PS2's big games 9.1

Tough to swallow indeed! ;)

Aww yeah, GameSpot knows what's up.

Halo 2 is awesome fun online, but the game, while still great, was just not amazing. Burnout 3 is the best game in the genre, it fucking bitch slapped Outrun 2 like a little whore. You bitches can cry that EA paid off GameSpot all you want, but you know in your hearts that Burnout 3 rocks all night.

What's so wrong about Burnout 3 winning the Xbox award? If it's the best game on the console (in Gamespot's opinion, anyway), shouldn't it win the award? I thought everyone loved that game. . .

Anyway, the awards are fine by me so far. :\

1. It's an EA game, and we all know that EA games are baaaaad.
2. It's not an FPS.
3. Master Chief isn't in it.
4. Gamespot is biased against Microsoft. (Allegedly.)
5. Not enough hype.

BS.

Better games than BO3: Ninja Gaiden, Halo 2, KotOR2, Riddick (and I'm not even a fan of Riddick and still can see it's a better game)

Games on the same league as BO3: RSC2 (different type of game, but in terms of quality it's not debatable that it's at the same level)

Hell, if you are picking an Xbox GOTY, you should try to align with an exclusive when the quality of releases has been so great. RSC2 would've been a more reasonable pick over BO3. Better graphics, good online content with XSN support, fantastic environments, etc.

BO3 isn't better than R&C: UYA and it got a better score. BO3 is a great arcade racer but that's all it is.

Gamespot simply has it out for Halo 2. The single player game is fantastic, regardless of whether the ending was disappointing or not. They completely dismissed the game because they didn't like the story and even put it in the disappointment awards, which is so very obviously a ploy for attention. The AI is the best FPS AI currently on consoles AND PCs (*shivers at the thought of friendly HL2 AI*), the graphics push the Xbox console as much as possible given the expansive levels and amount of activity. Halo 2 IS my pick for Xbox GOTY, but very close contenders for me were Ninja Gaiden and KotOR2. Those 2 latter games would've been much better choices than BO3.

My final judgement on all this is that they wanted to cause a little commotion and grab some attention by picking an odd choice for GOTY.

Halo blew everyone away. Halo 2, which technically superior to Halo, just felt like Halo 1.5 to me. There was, what, 2 new vehicles, 5 new weapons, and dual weilding? The single player game was merely an extension of the original. Multiplayer is where they really raised their game.
