GameSpot invades G4

p01ar

GameTrailers
Tonight and tomorrow night the editors of GameSpot will be hosting 4 episodes of G4TV's Cinematech.

The Episodes will revolve around:
1. The Greatest Year in Gaming
2. The Digital Women's Liberation Front
3. How to be a Player
4. The End of a Generation.

Here is the link to the shows:
GameSpot's Coverage
Cinematech's Coverage

I know that you all hate G4, but check out the shows anyways. Feel free to send me PM's expressing your hate.

I think they should look into getting a few Gamespot editors to be permanent hosts for a show or two, replace some of the godawful ones they have now.

It would be nice if shows on G4 were more like On The Spot. But I'm glad On the Spot is not on tv cause then there would be commercials.

I'm going to set my expectations for these Cinematech episodes at Gphoria levels.

I'll probably check it out as long as that douchebag host from Attack of the Show isn't part of it.

Most annoying person to ever grace G4.

Gamespot should just take over G4, frankly at this point (minus E3 coverage) it can't get any worse, only better.

wans't G4 in mating season with IGN?

Possiblity, but it used to be ZDNET, which is CNET which Owns gamespot, so I would assume that CNET still owns it? Or did they sell it?

If they still own it, why the hell did they not just change the name to gamespot?

I know Peer was on G4tv.com for many episodes and alot of the IGN editors were on the Icons show.

I will give you this, G4 has improved from where it was a year ago. I just hope more specials about the making of games are planned. It was very curious that G4 did nothing for the PSP launch though. Those kind of omissions really hurt. Also, there wasn't a Madden kickoff show either, was there?

For every good thing G4 does, there's an episode of Street Fury or Fastlane to make you forget it.

Well, honestly I can't look at ANY channel 24/7. Even ESPN has crap I don't want to see at parts of the day. I know GAF hates G4, but is there any network that has 100% great programming? Not sure why G4 is expected to do so. My favorite channel is Discovery, but I can hardly stand half their lineup, lol.

If G4 got rid of Street Fury, Fastlane, X-Play, and three-year-old reruns of Arena; it'd be fine.

The connections between G4 and GameSpot are strictly and loosely historical in nature.

Ziff Davis, former parent company of ZDNet, sold ZDTV to Charter Communications years ago. Charter Communications more recently sold the renamed TechTV to Comcast and merged it with G4.

Ziff Davis, not long after it sold ZDTV, split into two two companies: Ziff Davis Media, specializing in print, and ZDNet, the Internet division, which has since been bought out by CNET.

Sessler and his anti rpg rants,Tommy Telarico(or whatver the short guys name is) with his WTF is wrong with Nintendo views,The babe from Cheat, and that annoying loud butch blond with the mouth from hell.

Thats why I watch G4 baby.

It's all right man. The people here who hate on G4 constantly are either:

A. Jealous and think they should have the job.

B. Made to feel irrelevant by the network because it doesn't constantly cater to them.

C. Baiting myself and Matt Keil in hopes that we'll act like jerks too.

I honestly could give a crap. I placed the same four slugs who troll every G4 thread on ignore long ago. So I say you shouldn't care either.

As for the GameSpot Cinematech shows, they are all GameSpot's design. So if you like 'em, be sure to give them a hearty congratulations.

He also said he put the "slugs" who "troll" G4 on ignore, which shows that they just choose to ignore any complaints people may have about the programming.

ZDNet

Ahhhh, the good old days. :(

But GameSpot TV became Extended Play, then X-Play, then G4 buy TechTV, then rename the thing G4TechTV, then rename it back to G4... GameSpot always followed somehow...

I don't have any problem with people who dislike the network, and I don't ignore them either. I'm talking about a handful of particularly hateful people who get off on trying to make people feel bad in public forums where they can hide behind an alias. They don't care about making the network better, and they definitely don't care about the feelings of other human beings. If you hate me for ignoring people like that, so be it.

On a side note we are hiring college interns for a fall, please send me a PM if you are in SoCal and want to apply.

Back when Shane Satterfield worked for GameSpot, he said GameSpot (the Web site) had nothing to do with GameSpot TV, and that's why the show's name was changed to Extended Play.

This man is correct. By the time it was called Extended Play, GameSpot no longer had anything to do with the show.

Thanks though :)

Yeah, I don't get why you have to hate the entire network just because they have a few shows that you don't like. I catch the occaisional AOTS and enjoy it a good deal.

I'm even kinda warming up to X-Play sometimes.....it's nice when they are just being snarky and not going for full-on humor. Today they were complaining about having to review Digimon World 4....why even bother with it though? :lol Strangely the footage made me more interested in the game than I would have been previously..

At this point, we'll review just about anything. We have three new shows a week with 4-5 games per show. With approximately two games coming out per week right now it's not easy filling up the shows with content. Plus, we want to review every game we can fit into the show, anyway.

I only get to watch G4 when I visit my gf's folks, because it's not on our basic cable here. Soooo... that said...

My impressions of it are mostly positive... although the Whip Set and the car shows and that drama with Bill Bellamy need to go.

I enjoy Judgment Day. Lucas and Tallarico play off each other nicely, the show's production values are decent, and the reviews are mostly enjoyable. Except when they end up with a fighting game. Ooch. Hire a guest reviewer for those.

X-Play hurts me. The content is fine. It's the hosts that bother me. Actually, I can stomach Sessler (is his blood infused with caffeine?!). It's that girl to his left...whatever her name is... the one you guys wanted to see nude in Playboy... Everything she says seems scripted and fake (assuming, of course, everything isn't scripted and fake). Maybe it's just her mannerisms. I dunno. I just can't watch her for more than a minute before my head hurts.

Attack of the Show... I don't know why you guys hate on Kevin... I don't know what he did before, but he seems just right as host. I enjoy the content. I enjoy the format. The chick that does the links is listenable. Can't remember who the old co-host was. Hope the new one is decent. Saw an episode with Seanbaby. It seemed like they wrote some decent dialogue for him... or maybe he just looked THAT comfortable. Saw an episode with Jeff Gerstmann in it too. He seemed less comfortable, but they also gave him like half the camera time. Course, he'd been down there already working on those Cinematech episodes...

I dunno... I don't get the chance to watch G4 day in and day out, but it sure seems decent when I do get the chance.

Exactly how I feel. Judgement Day, Sessler, and Attack of the Show are all fine and good.

X-Play and the Whip Set really need to go.

Hell get rid of X-Play, toss some money at Judgement Day, and put Sessler on Attack of the Show.

Why? Just don't watch them, how about?

I find it exceptionally strange that G4 is generally judged as a unit, as though a show someone doesn't like impacts the entire network or schedule somehow. I don't care much for Modern Marvels, but I don't scream and yell that the History Channel sucks because of it and should cancel the show. I just watch something else.

G4 is the whore of gaming news... first its in bed with IGN during E3 and now with gamespot.. gg next month itll be 1up!

aha! that's it... now I remember... they were doing those E3 specials with IGN...

Since there are G4 people here, can you please tell me what day/time new episodes of Judgement Day premiere? I've been watching the channel for several years and I still can't figure that out. Doesn't seem to follow any pattern that I can figure.

Judgment Day premieres on Mondays. If there's a new episode for a given week, it'll start on Monday and air throughout the week. This page will indicate if a premiere is coming up.

BTW the cinematech shows are FUCKING AWESOME. If anyone complains the network isn't hardcore enough watch this show. I almost spat out my food the other day when I saw them covering Toshio Iwai's totally unknown music shooter for the NES. Great job.

G4 has come a LONG way from a year ago. The E3 coverage was spectacular. At this rate you're going to be owning everyone next year. And are we getting some good TGS coverage?

Calm down lets not get that jizz on other people now

Well, I can understand it if the network is playing that one disliked show constantly and you end up seeing it every single time you tune in. Like Comedy Central with MadTV or how MTV used to (or maybe still is) shoving Real World/Road Rules Challenge down your throat 10 hours a day. But as for G4, I haven't "accidentally" tuned in to Fastlane or Whip Set a single time. Those seem like the shows that rarely get replayed over and over, though maybe it's because they don't have a huge back-catalogue of old episodes like with other programs.

How is it that Fastlane has been whored around so much even though there's probably no more than 22 episodes? At least 3 cable networks have run it, and it even had a stint in syndication....

If G4 catered to the tastes of the majority of the people who post on this board the following would happen;

-Their ratings would be 1% of what they are now, and the network would be forced to go out of busniess.
-Those same elitist posters would still find something to bitch and moan about because their new favorite show Anime RPG Love Story Hour did not show enough footage of Final Hentai Fantasy XIXXIVIV: Dawn of the Mythical Tenticle and they have an obvious Sony bias.

Eh, it's true, G4 has improved lately, but I still don't really go out of my way to watch it. As an added bonus, Call For Help with Mr Leo Laporte is going to start airing on the network soon, which makes me giddy like a 12-year-old girl at a Hilary Duff concert.

I wonder how long it'll be before this turns into a full-blown "this is why G4 sucks" thread.

...so in any event, on topic. I'll probably try and avoid this stuff, because shows that feature gaming industry news types guesthosting tend to make my brain hurt.

I thought Cinematech was just CG footage from games overlaid with generic music? o_o

In the past it was montages and trailers. We've dropped the menu and the show moves quicker. For the past year we have been trying to make the show more engaging. We've had director's commentary about videos from Peter Molyneux, Mizoguchi and Lorne Lanning. We've started adding pop-ups, been getting exclusive and been focusing on machinima. We want to make the show fun and with 3 shows a week and only 3 producers on the show it's difficult. The GameSpot episodes were a special project and hopefully in the upcoming months you guys will see some more interesting stuff from us.

All this proves is that G4 get their best ideas from the GAF. :)

This is FANTASTIC news. Hopefully it'll stick around for a while and won't get pulled due to the complaints of some whiney 12 year old on the G4 message boards.
