GameSpot invades G4

I just got G4 a couple of days ago but sometimes the things they say are only for the US channel and not the Canadian one. Does anyone know if the 10pm eastern time holds for Canada also?

All this proves is that G4 get their best ideas from the GAF. :)
So do you know what the ratings are right now, huh?

G4TV's ratings are very bad (consistantly at around 0.1) and it is one of the bottom three or four watched cable television channels.

How is that relevant to my statements anyway?

Gee, let's see here... if what they are doing is both stupid in our collective opinions, plus it gets no ratings, then I think it would not hurt for them to change what they are doing, since it obviously does not work, and maybe go with our suggestions. What's so confusing about that?

man, that Digital Women's Liberation thing was terrible...
did anyone else watch that?

The best thing about it was watching the beautiful Half-Life 2 footage. Man... I really need to play that game. I'm assuming you need a ship-shape, top o' the line computer to run it, huh?

It is not that it is confusing, it just makes no sense. They cater to the mainstream. The mainstream that causes games like GTA, Madden,NFS, and Halo to sell 5 million copies. This mainstream can be marketed to and buys stuff that is "hip", stuff that the basic GAF forum poster would laugh at.

If they started catering to an audience that favors content like Panzer Dragoon, Lunar, Meteos, Xenosaga etc do you really think more people would watch? Do you really think that that is an attractive demographic for advertisers?

If G4 is effectively catering the mainstream, then why are they not watching? Maybe the mainstream does not care? Perhaps the network catered to a different group, it might attract more viewers, perhaps not as much as they would with the mainstream audience (which again, is not there), but more than they have now.

Personally, I think the biggest problem is that the "casual" or "mainstream" gamers are just that, casual fans. They're most likely not big enough fans to actually want to set aside time to watch a TV show about games.

Yeah, and except for a few examples, all it did was just show me how sad it really is for female characters in gaming. I thought the other stuff was pretty lame too.

Except for E3, I don't know what improvement you guys are talking about. If anything, this channel is only getting more and more irrelevant and off-topic with gamers. Even the most rabid fanboys of this channel trash it on the boards these days. What I want to know is how do we have any proof viewers won't watch more in depth programming, G4 has never even really tried. They should have used the late night block for something like this, but instead they're gonna be hot and sexy for everyone over broadcast tv. Ummm, can't wait for the sexy! :/

Only time your gonna catch casuals watching G4 is when the Madden Tournaments are going on.

Nothing against the game though, its my favorite game/sport.

Yeah, Cinematech is one of my favorite shows on the channel. It's cool seeing all the E3 trailers on the comfort of my own couch, for instance. I saw the show on 1998 "the best year in gaming" - although 1998 was a great year, I'm not sure if it was the best. But the games they covered - Radiant Silvergun, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Xenogears, as well as showing a cinema from Baldur's Gate... they went pretty deep with it.

I say, G4 should get rid of all the car racing shows, someone explained to me how it relates to video gaming but I think his comparison was tenuous at best. And also, get rid of Filter (aka put God of War as a qualifier in every top 10 list)... the host just seems extremely fake and purposely air-headed. Like, she has no interest or passion for games, and loves to condescend to the audience (good idea - insult your core audience!!! several of the game rags are guilty of this too). Say what you want about Morgan, you can tell she is at least knowledgable and passionate about games.

I also dig Judgement Day - I think Victor and Tommy play off each other nicely and they definitely have their opinions grounded (I can't say I agree with Tommy's much at all :P).

Exactly my thoughts, so why bother then?

Advertisers cannot effectively market to fringe outcasts of society who import obscure Japanese videogames and play RPGs for the love stories and flashy tenticles.

This man is correct. By the time it was called Extended Play, GameSpot no longer had anything to do with the show.

I think my biggest problem with G4 was always how anyone who complained was put into one big group and was just ignored anytime the network wanted to change something without the consent of their viewers. It just made the whole thing seem so futile.

Here's an interview with Kasavin where it sounds like this is just the start of more team-up stuff:

first its in bed with IGN during E3 and now with gamespot.. gg next month itll be 1up!

Well, back in May IGN hired a television consulting group:

As part of new plans to develop a series of projects for television networks, gaming information network IGN Entertainment has secured the services of the Creative Artists Agency (CAA).

IGN says it intends to provide programming aimed specifically at the 18-34 year old male market, broadening its own audience base in the process.

Unless the IGN stuff is being made for G4, they could be a potential competitor which makes the Gamespot teamup make sense.

BTW the cinematech shows are FUCKING AWESOME. If anyone complains the network isn't hardcore enough watch this show. I almost spat out my food the other day when I saw them covering Toshio Iwai's totally unknown music shooter for the NES. Great job.

G4 has come a LONG way from a year ago. The E3 coverage was spectacular. At this rate you're going to be owning everyone next year. And are we getting some good TGS coverage?

Thanks! The minicon package was a lot of fun to work on. Was a huge pain in the butt getting Sim Tunes and then getting it to work.
