Also, it looks like they nominated Dual-wielding in that second category. :lol

Biggest Disappointment
Driver 3 (Xbox, PS2)
Doom 3 (PC)
Halo 2 (Xbox)
Fable (Xbox)
GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (Xbox, GC, PS2)

9.4 for Halo 2 = disappointment
9.2 Half Life = good?
tsk tsk

Halo 2 made their biggest dissapointment list so it's out for every award they have it listed under and no way it make the GOTY list now. It shoudl take Audio though, no game compares this year.

I suspect that Riddick or Burnout 3 will take the Xbox game of the year, maybe Ninja Gaiden though.

Overall it's between World of Warcraft, Riddick, and GTA:SA for the actual GOTY. I would think that GTA:SA pretty much has it locked up. The trends would suggest GTA: SA will sweep most awards this year. Seems most people are pretty much in agreement that Halo 2 did not live up to the hype. I don't believe that but the hardcore crowd does. And that's the folks who are voting on the major awards. Oh well. Hopefully Halo 3 delivers for everyone.

They sure love Vin Diesel's sasuage.

And MGS3 should win for best music/audio. Hell, MGS3 should win everything its nominated for.

No Baten Kaitos? Criminal.

And you nominate Riddick? I loved Riddick, but Best Original Music is the last category for which I would nominate it.

And no "Pikmin 2" nomination for Most Improved Sequel?

And "Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GC)" get's nominated for Best Original Story? This is a joke right?

Xbox is the king of disappointment!

Wait! They rated it AAA and then put it on this list?

That specific category will make a bit more sense in the context of the awards; note that it's "biggest disappointment" rather than "most dissapointing game" or anything to that effect. Those who contributed to decisions about the finalists generally agree that Halo 2 is amazingly good good, but they also generally agree that the ending of the single-player campaign was a major letdown; that's the reason why it made the cut here.

I think it's a hype to gameplay ratio they're talking about. Halo 2 got so much hype it's ridiculous...their question is "Did it live up to it?" not "Was it good?" I thought Halo 2 was great, but I was dissapointed in it because of all the hype it received. I expected more.

Gamespot is placing the game on the biggest disappointing game list only because of it's ending? That's a stretch if you ask me. I played through on Heroic + hours of multiplayer and this game should not go near any category with the word disappointing in it except most disapppointing ending. To place the game in the same category as Driv3r is a disservice. Greg, as I sometimes disagree I respect all of your reviews because of their integrity, but I don't see any intergrity in this decision. It seems more like a slap in the face to an excellent game.

The gameplay in all of those games listed can be categorized as disapppointing, not just one aspect.

Best Graphics, Artistic
Half-Life 2 (PC)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
Myst IV Revelation (PC)
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GC)
World of Warcraft (PC)

Where is Metroid Prime 2: Echoes?
After seeing the Sanctuary Fortress this just isn't right.

Worst Use of a Good License
Bad Boys: Miami Takedown (Xbox, GC, PS2)
Fight Club (Xbox, PS2)
GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (Xbox, GC, PS2)
Seven Samurai 20XX (PS2)
Spider-Man 2 (PC)

Dunno about anyone else, but this was a huge disapointment for me. If anyone has seen the movie, they could have made this game very stylish (maybe even black&white) if they just stuck with the original story and events from the film. Could have been somthing amazing in my opinion.

And also....

Best New Character
The Boss - Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
Dog - Half-Life 2 (PC)
The King of All Cosmos - Katamari Damacy (PS2)
Kreia - Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (Xbox)
Ryder - Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)

Technically, he turns 17 years old a week from today. But I definatley give him the award. Damn fine game that was.

If you are going to put a game into biggest disappointment because some of the single player aspects are disappointing, there is no excuse to forget including Prince of Persia: Warrior Within and Half Life 2 in that list. None at all. It is especially unforgiving to forget Half Life 2 after you specifically mentioned the Halo 2 ending is disappointing Kasavin. Have you played Half Life 2 or have the people who made this list played it? You gotta be kidding me if you think the ending to Half Life 2 is anything but disappointing.

The ONLY reason that Halo 2 can be there was because of the astronomical hype. People were expecting the second coming and only got one of the 5 best games of the year, not the best game of all time. I expect it will still win the lions share of the GOTY awards from various media.

Then obviously Halo2 just sucks at everyting including single-player. :D

After Kasavins reasoning still no excuse to exclude Half Life 2. It had just as much hype on the PC side. And the ending is just as disappointing. Not to mention some other minor quibbles. I'm not saying I dislike HL2 or think it is bad (I think the game is great overall), but the game fits his criteria for 'Most Disappointing' to a T.

Nothing has ever had as much hype as Halo 2. Did you see the November NPD numbers? The first day sales numbers? It simply was at another level.

Still a crappy choice by Gamespot.

Half Life has sold around 8 million copies worldwide. Half Life 2 will outdue that. Half Life 2 was being quoted as the best PC game of all time months before release. Half Life 2 will eventually outsell Halo 2 worldwide. Since we can't get Steam numbers, there is rumors that Half Life 2 presold 2 million copies of the game over Steam! That is pretty damn close to first day Halo 2 numbers! So yes I would say Half Life 2 is nearly Halo 2s equal in terms of hype if you pay attention to the PC side of gaming.

Immense hype + disappointing ending = list choice

I'm not saying I agree with their choice either but if Kasavins reasoning is the criteria you have to include Half Life 2.

I disagree. Just not even close in terms of hype. [/my opinion]

Ohh, you didn't enjoy it? Interesting. Might I ask why? I haven't actually played it just yet, but I plan on doing so shortly. If I recall, you also disliked Star Ocean 3 quite a bit...right (which I absolutely loved)? Perhaps that comment is a blessing. :P

Riddick had awesome music damnit.

Not in comparison to some of the best soundtracks this year. It had decent to good music, I'd say, but it really can't compare to this years best...

sonycowboy said:

That is because your main focus is on the console side. :D And this was apparently obvious when you kept on calling Doom 3 the biggest PC game of the year for months even though a multitude of people kept on telling you Half Life 2 would be much bigger. :P

Hey everyone shut up. They won the award for best gaming site last night, so they must be correct in everything.

Riddick forever yo.

BTW, most innovative game? Seriously, WTF? So any licensed game that isn't pure shit is now brilliant?

Did the people bitching about Riddick actually play it?

With all the hype that Halo 2 and Half Life 2 got for chaning the FPS genre forever and doing something never done before.. Riddick did it. First of all, it had hand to hand combat system in a FPS that worked (something everyone else had failed at who ever tried it).. it also had very strong RPG elements and puzzle solving elements that were really well done (to the point that it didnt even feel like you were solving a puzzle, just seemed to be part of the story)... Plus, the eyeshine was awesome.... just like the movies, you owned the night. Shoot out the lights, flip of the switches, then run into a room and just destroy 15 or 20 gaurds as they fumble with their flashlights or trying to find switches to get the main lights back on.

My early criticism was based on all the media available at the time.
I said that my opinion was subject to change as more media was released.

I still don't understand why they would bother releasing ONLY media of the most generic areas in the game. Doesn't make sense.

Of course I played Riddick. I think it's a solid game, no doubt, but its complete dominance of these nominations is sort of hilarious, because it's just not THAT good. I can't help but think that the relative lack of hype leading up to its release impressed the jaded Gamespot reviewers more than anything about it, and it's mostly that that's being rewarded here.

But this just seems dubious to me:

Best Graphics, Technical
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay (PC, Xbox)
Doom 3 (PC)
Far Cry (PC)
Half-Life 2 (PC)
Rome: Total War (PC)

It must be the PC version that got it there, because I though the tendency of Xbox Riddick's graphics to turn into a blocky mess was pertty horrible. There's no way it's the best looking console game this year (I'd go with Ninja Gaiden).

well, I appreciate companies holding out a bit... I like to be surprised and not see all the interesting bits up front.

what was the original game mechanic in Riddick? Having the screen turn blue when people can't see you? Night vision?

Ugh. I liked Riddick, but NO WAY is it deserving of any award when compared to the likes of Metroid Prime 2, HL2, Pikmin 2, Katamari, etc.
