Gamespot's Best and Worst of 2004

what was the original game mechanic in Riddick? Having the screen turn blue when people can't see you? Night vision?

Your going to tell me Riddick felt like any other FPS you have ever played? It didnt do any one thing that was completely original, but the combination of its elements and the polish of them has never been done before, and the sum of its parts was a gameplay expirience that was completely original.

Riddick was a great game, but many games were much better. I thought Far Cry was the biggest surprise of the year. But IMO Halo 2 & MGS3 get top honors.

Not that I'd call it a "polished" game, but Riddick really reminded me of Breakdown.

Maybe from an idea point of view...

Breakdown had some pretty serious issues. :\ Damn shame, though, as there was some serious potential. I still really enjoyed the game, though, and the 30 minutes of the game were some of the most surreal stuff I've seen.

I thought Far Cry was the biggest surprise of the year.

I'm gonna shoot you in the face!

Seriously, though, I'd say Ninja Gaiden was actually my suprise of the year. I absolutely adore the game, but I never expected to. I really was completely uninterested up until release. The high marks convinced me to try it...and boy am I glad I did.

Ninja Gaiden was one of the best games I have ever played. I was waiting for that game for years so it wasnt as much of a surprise for me. But I loved every minute of that game. Just the big guns came out at the last minute to steal its glory. Much like great movies that come out right after the Oscars.

I didn't think Riddick was hyper-polished either, I guess (and I agree it's better than Breakdown, which is flawed in execution)... I don't want to sound like a hater or anything, because I think it's a solid piece of work, but it's truly bizarre to me that people think it's a better game than Ninja Gaiden.

Yeah, the constant screen tearing is what did it in for me with Riddick.

Having said that, I do want to check out the PC version since it is out. I'll pick it up soon.

Ninja Gaiden IS GoTY folks.

Breakdown's actual presentation of its story was superior to Riddick, though (especially the end...which I just can't get over). :)

Yeah, the way Breakdown laid out its story throughout made it worth dealing with the frequently horrible gameplay.

Dual Wielding is innovative, look when James Bond grabbed to weapons back in 1997

Oh lord, I assume you are referring to Goldeneye. Are you going to make me delve into the details as to WHY the feature you are talking about in GE is entirely different from that in Halo 2?

Dude, the category is 'Original Game mechanic', if you can't come up with an 'Original Game Mechanic' then the game doesn't deserve to be in the 'Original Game Mechanic' category due to the lack of Original freaking game mechanics. And no you can't say the whole game is an original game mechanic. Because that would be insane.

Didn't Marathon or some other ancient Bungie game have it first though?

Nope.

Though, you might be thinking of something like Rise of the Triad...which was similar to GE in the way dual weapons functioned.

I still remember when gamespot gave Serious Same 2 goty. Fuck their bankrupt opinions. They vote for shit to get some kind of dumb cred.

Your memory is incorrect. We gave the original Serious Sam game our PC Game of the Year award back in 2001, but Serious Sam: The Second Encounter didn't follow suit. The obvious competition included Operation Flashpoint and Black & White back in 2001.

Where is Metroid Prime 2: Echoes on the artistic list? It just doesn't seem right that WoW and PM2 made it in over MP2:E.

i don't know about paper mario 2, but world of warcraft deserves every last bit of the nomination. it's such a beautiful game.

and serious sam owns. maybe not game-of-the-year-owns, but i thought the choice was alright.

Besides the strategy aspect of it, I'm stumped. Please do go into details.

I think WOW looks nice, no doubt, but any one room in MP2:E has more attention to detail and artistic value than pretty much all I've seen of WoW.

Halo 2 allows individual control of two unique weapons. I don't believe GE offers that.

Honestly, though, it has actually been quite a while since I've played GE...so if you don't mind, could you refresh my memory on whether or not you can use two different weapons? I'm pretty positive that you cannot fire them individually, but I can't recall if it is possible to pick up and use two different firearms...

Strategy IS a big part of the feature, though. If you were simply using two of the same weapon as if it were one weapon...it really doesn't change things a whole lot. However, the dual weapon function in Halo 2 has many very strategic uses. A simple example would be a charge pistol and a magnum. One blast from the charge shot will take out an entire shield and carefully placed shots to the head with the magnum will kill the opponent almost instantly.

you can't compare a mmorpg to a game like echoes purely on a room by room basis. you really have to take into account the world's scope + the sheer variety in locations + the wonderful texture work. i didn't really think too much of WoW until i bought the game. there's just something about seeing it all in motion. especially the gryphon rides.

must be all the light bloom.

I don't remember either. I do see your point, however, but I'm not sure I'd agree that makes it entirely different...

Also, I see I should've read the thread. :(

It's retarded that they put Halo 2 on biggest dissapointment. They gave it a fuckin' 9.2.

A game can be great yet still disappoint...

When expectations soar, disappointment will generally follow.

Actually Marathon 2 had dual wielding... including dual shotguns utilizing a reloading mechanism too complex for us to understand. It came out around the same time as Rise of the Triad. But yes it was similar to GE in how both weapons fired at the same time.

Did it now? It's been so long...

Were there ever PC ports of the Marathon games? ('Cause they were originally made for Mac, right?)
Back in the day, you never heard about them, but now I'm curious of course.

Yeah, I played Marathon 2 on my PC. I don't believe Infinity or the original showed up on the PC, though (Infinity MIGHT have, but I can't remember).

Seriously, how the hell does Metroid Prime 2 not make it on this list? That's not even a serious category anymore without Echoes on the list.

I feel the same way about sudeki not making the list :D
