GameStop: "the flood gates are open for PS4 system reserves"

Production must be going very smoothly for Sony. Which is good news for me as I am very much looking forward to getting my Ps4 on launch day.

Only thing Sony got wrong was the box design.
Should have called me Sony!

Someone tweet/email this to yosp/boyes/kaz/etc! Do it GAF!

yeah, no doubt. also sounds like there is a possibility this will affect amazon preorders. if gamestop gets all the stock, what happens to the people (like me) that preordered the first day on amazon. if i have to wait because sony doesn't want to piss off gamestop, i will not be amused.

What the hell are you talking about? That makes no sense. Amazon will have enough..

smh

As long as the early preorders get priority, I really don't care. I preordered mine the morning after the E3 presentations so if I get somehow screwed out of mine on day one, I would then be pissed.

Sony have just allowed pre-orders in India which suggests to me they CAN produce far more consoles than MS: http://www.game4u.com/index.php?id_category=101&controller=categoryproductlist&aid=92

Woah. They are selling to developing nations out of the gate. They must be on track for a massive launch then.

Digitimes got good info for the first time ever it looks like.

In an era where Apple can sell 20m iPhones in a month, I think Sony, if they go for a WW launch, could do 5-7m in the first month if they advertised it right.

Reports said that mass production is about to start. Capacity is scheduled to hit 1 million units per month since September.
I guess they plan to ship more than 4m units this year.

16m is bullshit number, There is no way sony can shift 16m ps4 in 3 months,That IF they released it in Oct 1st.

I believe Sony's targets have been a little misinterpreted. It's most likely Sony's fiscal 2013 and not calendar 2013. That means Sony would like to hit those big numbers by March 31st 2014.

With Foxconn manufacturing them, I can't really come up with a reason why it wouldn't be possible.

so that 16M may not just be a pipe dream after all?

Bruce's box looks cool.
But sadly, It's a golden rule for entertainment devices to show the hardware on the package, even Apple is no exception.

Gotta break some eggs to make an omelette. If folks think they are getting launch units and have to wait until May 2014, that's good for Sony. Sony is in control of the relationship. Folks may bitch, feelings may get hurt, but they'll be clamoring for the system even more.

But then why wouldn't they do the same with Xbone? There would be no reason to limit any preorders for any system if that was the strategy.

They did it with 360, Wii, 3ds(maybe others, but these are just my experiences), so it's not a big surprise to me.

Some crazy numbers being thrown around in this thread. If the amount of demand shown by the pre-order data continues, I would potentially expect initial shortages. Though, it shouldn't last too long hopefully. It will still be SCE's biggest launch ever though. It's looking really good right now on that front.

If sony is smart they play the launch date just like they played DRM. Wait for microsoft to make the first move and then capitalize on it. If Microsoft launches in late November they don't need to rush for october (rushing more in terms of software)... they can still get a week or two on them.
It doesn't quite work like that. Launch expectations are pretty much set now. Whether MS announce it or not, SCE is going to announce for when they've planned.

Does anybody with a background and knowledge of electronics manufacturing know what the limits of PS4 production might be?

We have a good idea what's included.

Your team did the costing for it, there's nothing in it that is complicated to produce right? 28nm is mature, TSMC typically achieve 80% yields on the process. GDDR5 chips of the correct density might be the only impediment?

If that's the case I don't see any problems with them aiming for stellar numbers out of the gate....or am I missing something?

Okay, GAF, I have the green light to buy a PS4 this year. What are my changes and what's the best way to reserve one to make sure I get one ASAP?

Probably an amazon bundle.

Sure, its unlimited. You'll just wait until March 2014 to get yours because you'll be in the fourth shipment by now.

Eh, well, Amazon still has launch bundles available last I checked. I have guaranteed Launch Day delivery and I just preordered mine maybe 3 days ago.

If production is really going this well, shouldn't they have no problem launching around the world this year and not just in U.S. and Europe?

Guess I'll stick with my Amazon day one preorder. I have it preordered at Gamestop too, but unlimited preorders means first come first serve on day one, and I don't want to deal with that shit.

But why would they do something like that for Sony but not for Microsoft?

But sadly, It's a golden rule for entertainment devices to show the hardware on the package, even Apple is no exception.

The reason it's a golden rule is because very few electronic devices have iconic imaging. For example, when you think of Xbox hardware, you think of the color green. There's nothing iconic about a color in isolation. The Xbox brand certainly has iconic characters (Master Chief and Marcus Fenix), but the Xbox hardware doesn't have a unique identifier that the mass market is aware of. The only thing that comes close is the red ring of death lights, but I strongly doubt Microsoft would ever put those four lights on their Xbox packaging.

It's the opposite with PlayStation. When you think of PlayStation hardware, you think of square, circle, triangle and X. Sony can put the four symbols on the front of their box and you would immediately know what they were selling. It's iconic.

They've done this in the past (used the four symbols on their console packaging). I believe they did it with the PAL PSone box:

psone102c.jpg

In the above image, you'll notice the absence of the PSone hardware on the front of the box, however, the box designer included the things that are associated with the PlayStation 1 (white and gray color + DualShock buttons + PlayStation logo). Note that the hardware not appearing on the front of the box doesn't mean it's excluded from the other areas of the box.

For the PS4, Sony could have definitely gone with a box design similar to what Bruce has created. The PS4 brand colors are blue, black and white. Also, the iconic face buttons are present on the new DualShock, so all in all, the PS4 box could have had quite a few different looks.

That seems extrange , the only reason Gamestop can be so confident about the "open the flood gates" policy is that Sony really have or will have enough stock at launch , maybe this time Sony started production so much time before than last generations , since the console looks well planed I think this could be possible.

And now its being reported that Gamestop is ceasing all preorders of both systems at their close of business today. That was fast we will see if it happens.

I went to my EB/Gamestop today to preorder the PS4. The rep told me I was #73. He thought this would be chaotic and that Sony had promised that they would deliver the amount of consoles needed. He also mentioned that they had already started production and should be ready to launch as early as September.

I have never purchased a PS console at launch, my only concern is hardware malfunctioning. Their track record is that their 2nd revision is much more reliable and even sleeker/practical in design.
