Gaming-Age Xbox 360 Hands-On

2. How does the X360 respond to something like a CD/DVD with different types of media (mp3, video files of different types, etc.?)

It reads it as Mixed Media disc. It will allow you to play the files it recognizes (mp3, jpgs). It won't play video clips burnt to a CD/DVD. I don't have streaming setup so the Media Menu only lets me play videos that are on the 360 hard drive.

It plays CDRs and DVDRs just fine though.

Houston... We have a problem.

Can't stream anything other than music and images... Unless we have XP Media Center Edition.

Man that sucks.

^^

People were going to use that as a way to get the video on to the HDD... Oh well.

Yes, and from what I understand, you're mistaken. Thompson Drives didn't read burned CDs.

I tried a CD-R on my Xbox and it said I couldn't use it. But apparently you can, as some forumers will attest.

My Thompson drive can read burned DVDs

How loud is the system? I've heard it's louder than the DC...which kind of bums me out but I guess it's a side effect of being this powerful.

My Xbox can read burned DVDs. It's burned audio CDs that it won't play. Or maybe that was one of my older Xboxs. I need to put in a burned CD and see what happens.

Only the Samsung drives will play CD-Rs. The caviat is that it won't play DVD+R unnless they're burned a certain way.

Two holes in the tray indicate it being a Sammy drive

I have a question that I am in need of a definitive answer on.

Is there anyway to get mp3 files on the Xbox 360 hard drive? I have an iMac, so no WMC. I hear you can't move an mp3 players files directly onto the 360 HDD. Is this true? If so, is it possible to burn said mp3's onto a CD and then move these files onto the HDD? What about photo's? Same question applies.

oh and I don't pay for my mp3's so no prob with iTunes/AAC encoding here.

I would really appreciate some clarity here.

I'm after the exact same answer. My iMac comes tomorrow so I just wanna transfer it all onto the 360. They'll all be sat on the same network, and I don't care about video because the iMac will be connected to a display, but I wanna transfer my music and photos over to the 360.

I do not see a way.

There is an iPod patch on XBL marletplace, though.

I can confirm that the xbox 360 will play burned dvds. Haven't tried burned cds, or cds with mp3s or movies on them.

Not only that, it will read burnt Xbox 1 games. They will not play, but the emu can identify the game.

I don't have streaming setup so I don't know if you can transfer mp3s from your computer to the 360 HDD. When I insert a CDR with mp3s it only lets me play them or save/edit playlists. When I play a regular music cd it gives me the option to rip it to the HDD.

I hate this limiting crap MS is doing.

So much for being the entertainment center. Ugh, I hope the PS3 isn't like this.

Same goes with the machine not upscaling DVD movies to 720p/1080i. It's very likely something very trivial to do and they just won't do it.

Stupid question, but you can still 'stream' media from your PC with a hard wired router connection?

You should be able to. Not sure but I don't see how their will be a distinction between Wireless and Wired. It would only have to pick up your MCE PC and the Shared Folders.

Wait wait wait- so I won't be able to just take my linksys usb wireless adaptor and plug it into the 360 and use it? What kind of horseshit is this? I don't WANT to run cables all over my fucking living room. I don't WANT to pay out the ass for the MS adaptor. What I WANT to do is use the adaptor I already have and paid for, you fucking MS swine.

O.K. two quick questions...

1)Instead of using Microsoft's own headset, can you use one of those cellular phone handsfree sets like this one?

TXCKT10008.gif

2)Will the VGA cable be available on launch day and if so, will it have breakout RCA cables for the audio?

from txb 360 faq:

I know the new Wi-Fi adapter for the Xbox 360 is USB based, but will we be able to use the current Xbox wireless network adapter with the new Xbox 360?

Yes, you’ll be able to use any Ethernet-based wireless bridge (aka wireless adapter) with the Xbox 360. Just plug it into the Xbox 360 Ethernet port and installation will be the same as with the Xbox or any other console. The reason why Microsoft made the new adapter USB-based is because they wanted to eliminate an external power source for this adapter; other than that, it is identical to other wireless bridges

a wireless bridge and a usb wifi adapter are not the same....you cannot use a usb wireless adapter. the bridges such as microsofts/linksys/and dlink that were available for consoles this gen will work.

to the poster above you, MS said any standard headset will work and im not certain if VGA cables are available day one

Whew! Well that's good news.

RARR! TRIUMPH SMASH!!!

Seriously, WTF is the reasoning behind this? If Allard is harping on making the 360 such an "open" piece of technology, letting ipods and psps hook up to it, wtf is the point of not having any old usb wireless adaptor work? Smells like horseshit to me.

Truimph, I realize as a consumer you don't give a shit and you just want it to work, but what you are suggesting isn't easily accomplished. If they were to do this, they would have to have some sort of driver support for every single usb wireless adapter on the planet. It doesn't make any business sense, and also doesn't make much sense from a technological aspect either.

Wireless bridges are just that, bridges. You configure them ahead of time, then just plug them into the ethernet port on the console or whatever device that has an ethernet port.

MS just made their own USB Wireless adapter work and thats it. They aren't going to bother to support other parties. Not only that, they won't make money if someone uses a third party usb wireless adapter.

Of many, you can primarily thank that grand-standing scumbag Ernest “Foghorn Leghorn” Hollings and Hollywood for that crap.

Hollywood to Congress: “It’s moneyhats all around boys if you bring the computer hardware and CE industries around to OUR way of thinking on DRM.”

Foghorn Hollings to Microsoft, et al: “I say, I say, Boi, you must obey, I say O B E Y, Hollywood, or, or we’ll get the DOJ after y’all again.”

Microsoft: “Hmmm, now that you put it that way, Honorable Ernest Hollings, this DRM cloud may have a silver lining for us as well. Maybe we can actually make M O N E Y off of DRM!”

:)

It's a DVD forum licensing agreement restriction on DVD players. Upscaled DVD video can only be displayed over a HDCP/digital connection.

Component upscaling is certainly trivial, but not allowed by contract.

I've held it. I didn't think it was all that great. It felt a bit different to hold than the Type-S. I will get used to it though eventually (once I get my 360 whenever the hell that is).

I must admit that I was quite underwhelmed also upon holding the controller. I actually would have liked a bit more heft to the controller. It feels really light and hollow to me.

The button placement is perfect though.

Good. Anything louder than PS2 would be a bit ridiculous. The PS2 is bad enough - especially if you watch a movie with it :p

Ok, so let me just clarify this into one post. The xbox 360 is a digital media amplifier, but I :

1) Can't put any media on the hard drive except store bought cd's.

2) Can't stream anything to it wirelessly unless I have Windows Media Center.

3) Can only listen to mp3's via the 360 if I have my mp3 player actually hooked up to the 360 via USB

4) Can only view photos via the 360 if I have my digital camera hooked up to the 360 via USB

Question: Why the fuck can't I burn photos and mp3's on a fucking cd and put it on the 360's fucking hard drive?

THAT FUCKING SUCKS. J ALLARD CAN SUCK ON MY BIG HARRY BALLS.

Sorry do not have a wireless connection. You can stream music and pictures, not videos, with Media Connect 2.0 app for XP.

Jesus, you're like a retarded version of a retard aren't you? Have you actually read anything over at Xbox.com?

Link please. If you notice I do not have XP or WMC. Which apparently makes me totally unimportant to MS, but definitely not retarded.

I checked xbox.com, and every streaming application requires direct connection to an external device (ipod or digicam) or Windows media center. There is no way to store mp3's or photos on the 360 HDD, period, from all my research. And no way to stream files from my iMac, or any other non windows XP pc.

That is horseshit, is all I'm saying. Not sure how that makes me retarded. Plz explain.

360 can read MP3 CD's.

I am aware of this. I guess what I am really missing out on is the ability to use the 360 HDD like a pc hard drive. Having the mp3's on the drive would allow me to use custom soundtracks in a game like pgr3 without having to grab my ipod, a usb cable, and make sure its charged, likewise it would be nice to have some photos to show friends and family on the HDD so I didn't have to find my digital camera.....and so on....etc.

I just want to know if anyone can provide a satisfactory excuse as to why this is not being allowed by MS. Or if they are just a bunch of stupid money hat wearing bastards who demand the world conform to their bullshit OS and crappy media apps.
