Gears Ultimate Beta Access

if you stopped your dramatic readings for a second you would've realized, a broken ass movement system from 10 years ago, active snipe downs, an inconsistent gnasher, 2 piecing are reasons why you will have no one playing this trash with after 2 weeks of release. If a series cant adapt with times, people will move on to better things

and yes, i unlocked seriously before you even had a 360. Changes are good when it improves the game. or else we would still be crabwalking and weapon sliding and calling it "skill"

+1

Uh...I got my Xbox 360 in February of 2006 (back ordered launch unit with PDZ and Kameo) and bought Gears 1 on it's release day. So, great, useless, unnecessary and totally baseless assumption you got there bud. Oh, you have Seriously? Good for you. What does that have to do with anything being discussed in this thread?

It's funny how people call Gears 1 dated and suggest that it just has to change, even though Gears 2, 3 and Judgment already exist for that very purpose. Why should a remaster of Gears 1 play like anything but Gears 1? If they ever remade Gears 3, I would expect it to play like Gears 3. And while I'm on the subject, if you are dissatisfied with Gears 1 or Ultimate such, then just play Gears 3 and call it a day. It should be backwards compatible on Xbox One soon...

The Gnasher isn't inconsistent in this game. The spread has changed. It's hard to adjust to it after nine years of engrained habit and muscle memory. It took me a day or two to adjust my aim and timing. Now I'm wrecking people. The movement is fine. You're too used to wall cancelling in Gears 3. Ultimate has Gears 1 host/ campaign cover, but even smoother thanks to refinement and the game running in 60 fps. Yes, there is lag and some, infrequent bullshit. But honestly, what game doesn't have its quirks? For the most part, my experience has been rock solid. Anecdotal maybe, but it counts for something.

Nah, the gnasher in this game is just some inconsistent annoying shit. Just because it's in the original does not make it the best. Also 'Ultimate Edition' would suggest more than just a 1:1 original remake.

Oh hell naw they need to get rid of host if this is true

Yeah it can be bad at times, but it's a beta and we don't know how old this build even is. Hopefully it's addressed before launch.

Gnasher feels off tonight, I guess it is just me because other people have no problem gibbing me.

I think that if you open up the store-page of the beta on xbox one, you'll see that the release date of the beta was somewhere around february.

That's when you're running and you tap the RT+A, jump and shoot while you're laid out flat in the air, right?

They took this out?

Nope, that's when you are running and press RT to make your character stop and shoot.

This was slightly changed in the release version of Gears 2 where you had to let go of A and press RT at the same time, but it gave similar results, then with Tittle Update 2 it was taken out and it never showed up in the series again. (Good riddance)

Lol again with that reasoning.
Firstly it's a remake, not a remaster.
Secondly, your entire notion is flawed because you ought to know that it does not play like Gears 1, it's some bastard child of Gears 1 and later games right now, for every thing it does that's similar to Gears 1 it does another thing that's not like Gears 1. If you want a list of things I can post it, but I think you already know.

Also it DOES NOT need to play like Gears 3, it can have exactly the same pace as Gears 1 but allow you to detach from cover just by rolling to a side (basically not be sticky, and this is my most important point, I don't even care about slide cancel. This is a mechanic that every third person uses as it's about what's "right" not what's "Gears 3").

It can keep exactly the same gun balance but not do centre screening, it can keep exactly the same shotgun but give a superior hit feedback.

It can get rid of weapon slide which was a glitch due to networking issue in Gears 1 and still be Gears 1 (who's to say your experience of Gears 1 where you could weapon slide is the "real one" while mine where I spent majority of the time playing it on LAN and hence unable to weapon slide a "fake one" ? ).

Holy shit balls.

Played this last night quickly for one game and that nostalgic feel....oh boy!

Cannot wait to finish work and sit in my underwear and play it all weekend.

Anyone know when the beta ends?

Not sure if this has been discussed already, but Cole Train exclusive skin can be obtained during Saturday.
"We will still have a timed exclusive to reward the most loyal beta players – on Saturday from 2:00 - 5:00 PM PDT (4:00 - 7:00 PM Mexico/CDT, 5:00 - 8:00 PM EDT, 10:00 PM - 1:00 AM GMT) we will be giving away the Cole Train skin only to players who play during that exact time period."

Anyone know when the beta ends?

From gearsofwar.com: The beta is currently set to run for 8 days, or until Tuesday at 11AM. you can read the rest of the faqs here:

Game is great but there are a few quirks that bug me:

Can't hear enemy footsteps, I can be sitting in cover and have someone run right up behind me without ever hearing much at all.
Blue/Red glow - take this shit out, makes it hard to be sneaky during those 1v4 situations, beside the fact that it looks like crap. We have spotting, we don't need glow.
Hammer of dawn should not have unlimited ammo.
The HammerBurst wasn't used much in the original, and it doesn't seem to be used much in the beta. Needs a damage boost to make it worthwhile.
Frags need a damage boost, even on Gridlock tossing 2 frags up to the longshot doesn't even smoke the enemies out, they just move to the other side.
Boomshot is still random, even more so with active reloads disabled.
Nitpick: the cog on the loading screen (red flaming skull) turns counter clockwise, while all others turn clockwise.
I'm undecided on the sniper bloom, I've made plenty of quick pops but not as many as I used to. Maybe they found a good balance.

Great post!

Exactly my thoughts. I personally don't want spotting. Glow MUST go.

played the shit out of this over a few days, hit level 18 or so. i still dont think its quite right, some behaviours of items arent true gears 1, the gnasher is inconsistent bullshit as everyone says. however though im enjoying the other weapons immensely.

torque bows explosions are so nice, grenades seem a bit nerfed, longshot melon pop headshots are great, and every game im on people are sleeping on the pistol. took a whole team down with pistol whipping, washed down my victory with salty tears as they PM'd me with rage. thats my go to weapon now, 2x pistol shots and a punch = down, and damn do people hate it.

Oh hell naw they need to get rid of host if this is true

What's wrong?

Dedicated servers. No host advantage to speak of whatsoever. Dedis will even be used for private matches

Lol again with that reasoning.

It most certainly does play like Gears 1 and feels a lot like it's PC counter part actually, just with a few minor tweaks, such as omni directional evade, and oddly, lower global sensitivity. Even on max settings, movement does feel a tad slower than max settings on Gears 3, but still way faster than in Gears 1. Strafing and aiming seem slightly slower and tighter too The Gnasher spread is narrower, the Torque Bow's arrow has even more magnetism than it did in Gears 3, which wasn't present at all in Gears 1. The Boomshot actually works (well...more than it did in Gears 1 lol), the Longshot is similar to how it was in Gears 3 (certaintly not Gears 1 at all still not sure on specifics on HOW similar it is to Gears 3 though). Of course it can still down in one shot with an active

I'm not totally dismissive of any changes. I'm more than willing to admit Gears 1 wasn't perfect and will never pretend it ever was. But I will still say that whether it's a remaster, remake, revision, or whatever, it should, for the most part, feel, look, sound and play like the original. It should capture what made the original so great and memorable in the first place, but with a few, necessary refinements that make it even better but without damaging the integrity and soul of what made it great.

If they ever do Gears 2, or Gears 3, being a Gears 1 fan, I wouldn't suggest they play like Gears 1, but how they did originally, but again, with a few small adjustments. The small changes found in Ultimate do not impose profound or fundamental changes to the games formula. Stuff like stopping power, smoke stun, meat shields, ect would completely change the dynamic and pace of the game.

Because it's a beta, and we don't even know how old this build is.

I mentioned this to my friends yesterday. I'm sure whatever build(s) they compiled in their studio yesterday or even right this very moment are way more stable and functional

Man this shit is hard.

As it should. Welcome back to Gears 1, baby.

I really miss actual Gear of War balance. The original game's balance was to heavily favored to shotguns it created an awesomely unique game about movement and shotty skill. With AR's being totally legit weapons it really changes the matches. It sucks because I fucking loved the original gears multiplayer because it was different. They seem to only want to balance the game to be like every other 3rd person shooter though. Maybe I am remebering wrong but I thought you used to have way more camera control during roady runs too.

Gears is unique in that 1) it's a close quarters game and 2) it's go to, bread and butter weapon of choice is a shotgun, rather than a rifle. No other major competitive shooter plays, feels, looks or sounds like Gears. This is what makes it special. This is what makes it so great. Why should it be yet another game that focuses on rifles and medium/ long distance combat? Why should it be relegated to a war of attrition with dudes firing rifles from behind cover the whole time? Rifles do have their place in Gears, mainly for cross fire and suppression. But the Gnasher is the star of the show, and by far the hardest weapon in the game to use. Ask any hardcore or pro player. It's taken us YEARS to get this good and we still screw up and make fundamental errors. Some of it is nerves and chocking in the heat of battle

Game is great but there are a few quirks that bug me:

Pretty much this, especially that glowing bullshit. Yuck.

Edit

Damn. Dp

Alright something is fn weird with the shotgun bullet spread. I was able to get headshots with it from huge distances yesterday. The first day I saw it happen to someone else and was like wtf maybe lag, but then it happened twice yesterday. I shotgun "sniped" a player with full health. On the map with the Troika I was on top of the steps while the guy was on the bottom of the steps hugging the wall. Was shooting at him from there and just got headshots on him twice. I was stunned the first time, the second time I hit xbox record but the game didn't record it. Is recording disabled? I'm unable to twitch stream either.

Gnasher spread is narrower, thus, has the potential to do a ton of damage. Headshots are still possible as they were in Gears 1.

Video recording and streaming are disabled

You can take screenshots? Been trying to take a screenshot of the loading screen for my dash background but to no avail.

Anyone else succeed with this?
You mean an actual loading screen with the gear or Marcus and the rest of Delta?

You can't take a screenshot of the former

A lot of people on the gears official forums dislike bullets coming from the camera, I honestly wonder if anything will change for the final release.

Spotting is fine, it's sort of needed in this age where nobody has a mic. The glow on the other hand, yeah that kinda needs to go. I am having a bit of a hard time remembering, but did we have bloom on the longshot in Gears 1, or at least like this?

No, seems dull.
No more sniper war on canals I guess.

Yeah the forum is full of ignorant whiners. I couldn't stand reading the posts. I hope center screen stays.

It had bloom but wasn't visually indicated with the crosshair. However, there is definitely more bloom it seems when you try quick peeks. It's a little wild.

I liked the gameplay and all, but holly damm is much harder then I thought it would be. Even Halo I found to be more newbie friendly! :(

The beta is pretty terrilbe so far, the game feel slow and clunky as fuck, a broken ass movement system from nine years ago, OP melee, active sniper downs, an inconsistent gnasher, people eats shots, your shoots are coming from the middle of your screen and not from the gun, 2 piecing is back, powerless power weapon like nades/boomer, you get stun by almost everything ( melee, nades .. ) Can't hear enemy footsteps etc ...

If they don't change the game, it will die pretty soon after it's release, just look at this :

LMAO

What the hell did they do to Gears?

jeeeesus. please fix that.

I hope they're actually taking feedback and looking at some of this stuff. It's never going to be Gears 3 but some of these things could be easily fixed before release.

Gnasher needs to be changed, I've had shots that don't come out properly. I've say aiming in and shooting someone 2/3 times from close enough range to at least down em, but nothing's happened.

I love Gears, played 1-3 and Judgement, but this feels like...a beta! Hopefully the full release gets a lot of polishing.

Also active sniper downs and melee stun need to go.

I hate audio in this remake.
I can't hear granades, I never know where is torque bow guy, characters are stomping like dinosaurs.
There is also something wrong with how you pick up weapons. It's not as smooth as it was. Now you must go to full stop and wait some time untill you will be able to pick up weapon.
With this shotgun spread ,center of the screen feels a lot more off than in Gears 1.

It's obviously some glitch. Ammo counter is same after each shot

I'll never understand why the gnasher behavior has always been so inconsistent and plagued by lag and/or weird invisibility frames. It makes no sense to me.

You can take screenshots? Been trying to take a screenshot of the loading screen for my dash background but to no avail.

Strange. I took a screenshot of the game yesterday and then set it as my background, not sure why you're having an issue?

Loving the beta so far.

It's a fucking zoo over there. A lot of people there are quite literally, kids (yes, actual children) who have never played Gears 1 in their lives. I hope to everything holy TC doesn't implement any changes those animals are insisting. Gears 1 fans have waited too long and played through three sequels, for this game to end up being yet another disappointment

LOL

I encountered a bug last night that made it so you could not kill a downed opponent unless you chainsawed them. I unloaded a full pistol magazinec and 8 Gnasher bullets on a downed Grenadier. He simply got up and killed me. Needless to say I was livid and wanted to choke the life outta someone. But I haven't encountered anything like in that .gif

Edit

OrangeOak is right. The ammo doesn't deplete. It's probably server lag, a lag spike or the player is about to be disconnected entirely. Probably not a big deal then.

We are playing an older build of the game. Friend of mine told me at E3 its a newer build they're playing.

Yeah this happened to me. At the Boltok side of Canals, I was sniping from one end to the other and did a headshot and a 2 bodyshots on a Cole player (without reloading ofc). I thought that it was a connection timeout, but then he teleported next to me and popped me with the shotgun.
