Gears Ultimate Beta Access

Gears games have always changed so it's not just you Gears 1 fans who have to go through stuff, Gears 2 when it came out was a very different game from Gears 2 after the last title update and the various changes in between. Gears 3 changed things up from Gears 2 so fans of Gears 2 may not have likes Gears 3.

This notion that only Gears 1 fans suffered and hence deserve is so pointless.

This is true. Most of my friends that I play Gears with like Gears 2 the best and they were disappointed by Gears 3. It is still a good game though.

People want non Gears 1 mechanics in a remaster of Gears 1

Minor things, that are also optional, like omni directional evade, are fine and welcomed. But stuff like stopping power, the Retro, shots from the barrel....none of that is Gears 1. You want that, go play Gears 2 or 3 or ask them for a remaster of those games. A revisit to how Gears once is long and far overdue.

This game isn't clunky. Stop it. Maybe increase the max sensitivy a bit, but overall, the game is fine. You're too used to wall cancelling. Play campaign or play as host in Gears 1. Cover isn't sticky at all. 60 fps in Ultimate makes it even smoother. The complaints make absolutely no sense

I haven't gotten "stuck" once in the beta

The Gears 3 glow effect is even more intense in this game :/

You can see dudes way too easily, especially on War Machine. You can't sneak around or be stealthy at all. Hopefully we can disable that in private matches

The Gears 3 glow effect in this game is ridiculous. Did the devs give an explanation for why they disabled actives?

You know, I'm totally fine with this game being for OG Gears heads and all that.

But damn, you don't need to trash my Retro Lancer like that. That thing was love at first sight. Uncalled for.

I'm getting back to where I was in my gears prime. Usually topping the leaderboard.

As such, my main complaint with the game is shit teammates lol. I was on one of the sniper bridges on canal across from 2 enemies. I saw my teammate flanking them from behind. Gonna be an easy 2 kills I thought. He runs right up to the guy and doesn't 1 shot him with the shotgun. Misses like twice and gets killed.

gzus

Oh and Gears 2 changes? TU6 made that joke of a game what it should have been day one, and it was still broken as hell

OK so the character glow is ridiculous. Why is this even in the game? How hard is it to get this right?!
Also, the Longshot sound effect. WHY?
The original one was the best, this is a Gears 1 remake. I can't even fathom what is going through peoples heads here. Original Longshot had the best sound effect, and it needs to return. They are all over the map here with these changes. I swear to god no dev has ever understood the golden formula Gears 1 had (even if it was on accident) and to this day they still don't.

Once again, you know your stuff. I like you.

Mmm.. that sweet feeling of justice being served to all those kids in Gears 3 who didn't know there was a D-Pad on their controller and swore by their retro's.. they're going to hate this game.

People have to and must understand that the Gears faithful, the Gears vets, the Gears fanatics, the motherfuckers who have put in hours and still play since 2006, have been abused, let down and jerked around for nine, looooooong years. This is OUR game. The one we fought, demanded, asked, pleaded and prayed for. A game we thought we would never, ever, ever get. A game that brought so many people to the Xbox brand and so many, myself included, into competitive gaming. Gears 2, 3, Judgement and casual fans will not ruin this for us. We have dealt with unwanted, unwarranted, unjustified changes for too long. It's now YOUR turn adapt.

It's your turn to see what Gears is all about and what started a franchise you claim you love so much. See what gave birth to such an incredibly intense, raw, and exceptionally fun game. Gears 1 is back and better than ever. It's time to celebrate.
I not only disagree, I think your wrong, gears 1 was great at the time but the gnasher being the main viable weapon in the game is not a good thing. Stopping power is one of the best things introduced in gears. I've played since gears 1 was released and still I stand by the fact that gears at its best is gears 3. This beta is Pretty dissapointing and really shows alot of flaws the original gears have.

I'm having a real hard fucking time aiming the shotgun. Way more than I used to. Is there a youtube video or something explaining what I should be doing lol?

take a small sticker of some kind, aim your site so you get the centre of the screen, and stick the sticker on it.

instant crosshair, there forever, thats where your shotgun will hit

Nope.

Couldn't have put it better myself, like you I've played since the beginning but its so obvious that gears 3 is without a doubt the most fair and balanced. Going back to this it makes you see, that while the original was great for its time, the evolution of gears was for the better (except judgement).

The gnasher battles weren't harder.

Also I can play gears 3 exactly how it is mean't to be played. It's very easy to learn how the mechanics were designed and adapt. My point was, the end gameplay was a lot less fun in my opinion. Camping with lancers was a fucking joke.
put a bluetac in the middle of ur screen and see how easy gears 1 gnasher battles are. seriously it doesnt even compare to gears 3 in this department. also there was a gnasher playlist in gears 3 in which u only had gnashers and pistol, dont know if u tried it out or not
You cannot do that in Gears 1 neither.

Punish the mobility that made gears great kinda ruined for a lot o people.
They are still 3 different games ,and as someone said in this thread, not comparable.
gears 1 is literally 'gnasher bumrush: the game', of course against the better players u have to put a bit more thought into it but the game mechanics are well suited to this strategy. dont get me wrong, gnasher is my fav weapon in the game but i liked the variety that gears 3 offers

I was never great at Gears but I played a shitload of it back in the day because it was easily the best 360 game out and I loved it. I only played the first week or two of Gears 2 (lol wasn't much playing going on) and moved on to other stuff. Never tried 3 or Judgement as my xbox was basically broken. I don't know anything about the 1 -> 3 changes and complaints but if this game turns out to be faithful to the original I would seriously consider getting an xbox partly for it and Halo. Unfortunately with the character glow and whatever other BS I'm learning about in this thread that's not looking likely.

People defending shit like smoke ragdolling, speed reduction, stopping power and the sheer existence of the Retro Lancer almost make me want to scream and jump out a window.

Gears 1 was a game (though far from perfect) that had a huge skill gap and required a lot of dedication to understand and get good at. But they added so much nonsense over the years to lower that gap. They made it mind numbingly easy, for folks who can't be bothered to practice, to get kills and earn their figurative back pats and gold stars, with zero effort.

Pretty much all this. So much this.

And seriously, anyone who thinks that Gears 1 boils down to "bum rush with the Gnasher lol" is so seriously wrong and probably terrible at the game. Because anyone who does that will get out maneuvered and destroyed so quickly.

Gears 1 is about movement and close quarters. Not shooting. Someone with a snub pistol who knows how to move will outplay someone with a Gnasher who doesn't know how to move almost every single time. That is the core of Gears 1. Every other gears after that became about shooting.

Brofist!

I still don't understand how running straight through lancer fire and blasting someone's face off is fair. A ranged weapon should beat someone at range, not do next to nothing while the person with the gnasher gets all the advantage. I get that some are unhappy that the new gears were not "the shotgun game" anymore but seriously how can you not see that basically having one viable starting weapon is not fair or balanced.

My first experience with Gears MP and it's pretty fun even though I'm terrible

How do you use the chainsaw by the way? I hold B but it revs and doesn't seem to attack

still no seriously

walk into the enemy while holding b, it has warm up time so hold b a second or so before you try to attack with it.

Being shot with the chainsaw up will stun you.

The same reason why shooting someone in the head with a snub pistol one time doesn't equate to a headshot. It's not about what makes sense outside of Gears or in a traditional shooter. This is what Gears 1 evolved into. The weapons work differently. The lancer is a support weapon. It is weak. Plain and simple. This is a remake of a game, not an evolution. As such, it shouldn't be adapted to standards the new Gears games set. Those that want to play it need to adapt to how it was.

Yes and yes.

Bro fist for no seriously! I had about 19k and never got it lol.

Played the beta. Some of the weapons like Boomer are nerfed. I haven't played since 2012 and I still kick ass a bit.

Gnasher is a bit nerfed as well.

People might think movement is bad because you can't side roll out of cover in gears 1. Can't wait for this to come out, it is so good. They need to change a few things that they shouldn't have changed in the first place, but omg... it feels so good.

Its almost 10 years since gears came out and people still cant grasp the idea of the shotgun.

The shotgun in gears 1 is annoying, doesn't help that your bullets come from the camera and not the gun really throwing shots off up close, it might be a gears 1 thing but it's dumb.

Gears 1 boomshot was exactly the same. More of a grenade launcher than a rpg

it has hella radius in other gears tho

Played the beta for a couple hours. It's well done, but ultimately not my thing. Not a huge fan of the weapons and movement. I can certainly see the appeal though. I'll check back for Gears 4 I think.

Servers have been trash for me today. Ping stayed in the 40ms range, but my shots weren't registering in matches. Hope they improve the servers a bit by launch.

Oh stop with the dramatical phrases.
You are implying that only people who like Gears 1 are Gears vets. I am a Gears vet, I literally have thousands of hours across all three games and I have played it since 2006, I do not like to play Gears 1 now. I loved it back when I played it, Gears 3 has its flaws but the sum is greater than its parts and overall it's a better made game than Gears 1.

Smoke ragdoll ? That shit has been taken out since TU2 in Gears 2.
Also it's clunky because of the fact that the movement system has been made better, not just in Gears but in every cover based shooter. You name me one post 2008 cover based TPS...JUST ONE, that does not allow you to get off the cover simply by jumping/rolling to a side...if it wasn't clunky you'd find it in games today. To even think that the very first implementation of a modern cover based game, the very first attempt Epic ever made...is not clunky at all in any imaginable way is just plain wrong.

And stopping power is a good thing, only people who ever disliked it were people who couldn't adapt to a style that prevented 100% Gnasher bumrushing. You could still rush with a Gnasher but with appropriate precautions, if you couldn't then it's all on you really.

Also why is there TDM? Why is there omnidirectional roll? Why is the hit response and shotgun spread different? Why does the hammer not make a sound anymore? Why did they remove active reload if this was Gears 1 for purists? You don't consider these things at all...yet call out others and claim this is Gears 1 through and through and as such it's stupid to ask for other additions.

Where's the like button on this forum?

Well yeah, it's actually useful, fun and makes bouncing smoother and less janky.

Like telling people they're too used to combos in a fighting game.
This a hundred times over. How is someone going to sit here and complain about the idea of not remaining faithful to Gears 1 yet just give this omission a pass? The flow of close quarters combat is just not the same as classic Gears, causing it to just feel wrong to me.

I miss the beep before hammer of dawn went down...it was good for alerting enemies and yourself (for feedback)

I agree about the hammer of dawn. I'm also not a fan of how everyone runs like a ninja now. You used to have to stop your run to sneak up on people. Now it's just full speed run and pull up for an easy kill.
