General FFX-2 thought...

I was talking to a friend about FFX-2, and I'm thinking about it. The thing about the game, it seems, was that the whole Charlie's Angels thing ruined it. They have all the story elements there to actually pull off a successful sequel. The shit with the Crimson Squad probably could have been expounded on further, but between that and the warring factions, the character storylines, etc, and especially the new battle system which was surprisingly fun (simply cuz of the speed) they had enough for a good game. And Yuna, if you're gonna pick a female from any FF game to build a sequel around, is probably the one best suited for it... well, maybe second best, after Tifa.

They just ruined it with all the heaping piles of Girl Power and such. There was so much estrogen in my PS2 with that game that I became bloated and moody.

What do you all think?

I stopped when I discovered that I was unable to achieve 100% status by not talking to the moogle at the very beginning of the game.

I was 3/4 through.

Fuck you.

Wait this isn't about the game?

Gross. Creep.

Haha, I didn't figure it out til I had the game collecting dust for 6 months and finally read an FAQ on how to get 100%.

6th replay for me..at the beginning..so I still had to do tons of stuff on that playthrough to get 100% + the 'perfect ending' in one file. :lol

You do know that there is a New Game + option, right demi?

Bad game, and this is coming from a long-time FF fan. I was fine with the girl power thing, but what ruined it for me was the lack of new areas/monsters. It felt like I was playing FFX all over again. In fact, I think I would have had more fun playing FFX over again (which I thought was great). I finished it with something like 40% with no desire to achieve 100%, especially when I found out the little things you have to do to get 100%. This game was more of a (boring) expansion pack than a sequel.

Bought it and can honestly say that I've never popped it into my PS2. I don't know what's more shameful. Having bought it and never played it? Or simply having bought it?

Playing that game makes you realise how fun it is exploring a new world in an RPG, ie how boring it was going over the same world again.

i played through the game twice and never saw much evidence of "girl power" or any sort of female empowerment. cheerfulness, yes, but for christ's sake, most of you describe it as some sort of Lisa Frank-inspired visceral explosion of pink unicorns and rainbows. the game ain't THAT threatening.

Wait, if you don't ever pay attention to or care about the story, why did you try to get the 100% ending?

Because I had like 98-99% on my 4th time through and wanted 100.

One of those *gone this far, why not all the way* type things (plus it was the only PS2 game I had).

I have no idea what was said in the perfect ending, though. :)

It wasn't all that bad. Ok, it was NOT worth the US PS2 I imported for the game, it had some of the most annoying minigames in history, midi music from hell and
the last boss is the cheapest in any Final Fantasy ever
, but it looked and played nice and had some nice touches. Nevertheless it's the worst FF game I played.

The buy of the PS2 was compensated with other awesome software such as GoW, Shadow Hearts Covenant or Suikoden 3.

I'm in the minority here, but I had no problem with 'all the heaping piles of Girl Power and such', myself. I thought the game was a nice change of pace, and I enjoyed the interplay between the characters and the romantic themes woven through it. While I probably wouldn't be quite as keen on X-2 as a standalone game, as an extended epilogue to X, it was terrific. (Bear in mind that FF X is my favorite FF, and that I'm very fond of the characters and setting.) It allowed me to revisit Spira and see what happened to everyone in the aftermath of the first game, and also gave me the opportunity to
bring Tidus and Yuna back together again, capping off the story in a way that was more to my liking
. So I'd have to say that I was well satisfied with it.

Wow I really don't know how people can hate this game. The story was pretty bad but the gameplay was outstanding. In fact, I spent probably 150+ hours on this game just trying to optimize all my characters. I think I stopped after getting 3 copies of the ultimate suits.

I liked it, it did start of very slow thought though. I hated the 100% ending, I thought it undermined the whole game, it was suppose to be a personal journey for Yuna and how to deal with the loss of a loved one.

Ouch...

the battle system was a joke... holding the X button for most random battles is not fun...

the game actually gets batshit difficult later on....

the whole "press x" to win battles theory is not true.

It was actually a pretty fun game. I little too girl powerish in a lot of places and I hated Brother with a passion but the actual gameplay is neat.

Awful awful awful awwwwwwful game.

I hadn't played an FF game since FF9 and a few minutes of FF10(which I didn't like very much). But one time when my bro and I were bored we decided to rent this game... without knowing anything about it besides the fact that it was Final Fantasy. We turned on the game to see little girls screaming back and forth at eachother. I didn't know the creators of Final Fantasy were avid watchers of the Power Puff girls.

For the remainder of the time we had it... my brother would FORCE me to Arranged Team 2v2 with him on warcraft 3 by PLAYING THIS GAME IN MY ROOM WITH THE VOLUME HIGH UP.

I couldn't last more than 5 minutes each time.. even when I really REALLY didn't want to play war3.

thought it was crap. Dancing to kill?? WTF!

Horrible game, not as bad as ToS, but still pretty pointless

I mean, i wanted new areas to explore, not recycled FFX backdrops. Graphic were terrible to boot

Yeah the Battle System ramps up after chapter 2, very fun and engaging game. Loved it personally. Sure it had it's "girl power" moments, but it wasn't too intrusive.

My favourite RPG this generation. It's just fun. If you can't cope with the 3 or 4 annoying girl power scenes then you're going to have serious problems coping with life. I hated FFX. This was Square's way of making it up to me. FFX-2 once again felt like a Final Fantasy. I think the freedom had a large part to play in that.

This deserves its own thread, 6th replay? I find it very hard to play even a good game a second time after finishing it. In this day and age, there are so many quality games and I've got a huge backlog… kudos to you sir!

PS. I haven't played/bought FF-X yet (hard to find a non-GH version), is playing FF-X 2 first spoiling a lot of FF-X? Is it advisable?

I never really thought of the 100% ending as the 'true' ending for me. The 100% ending might be the 'true' ending for somebody who was upset by FFX's ending and didn't want to let go of you-know-who. You have to be so obsessive about nabbing every event necessary for that ending that it reflects a Yuna that constantly has him on her mind and can't bear to let go. The ending for the game I prefer is the one that involves Yuna learning to deal with her loss and moving on with her new friends.

And man, does every thread on this game have to turn into a bitchfest? The horse is dead, folks.

You really almost have to play FFX first, in my opinion.

I played through seven or eight hours of FFX before I realized it wasn't really my thing, and then played FFX-2 after having FFX thoroughly spoiled for me. I enjoyed X-2 quite a bit all the same. :D

I'm sorry, are you somehow offended that you play a game for sassy 13 year old girls?

The smart-aleck attitude only works if you have an actual base of respect to draw on, junior. Going to actually hold up your "argument" or it'll be a short stay.

Yup, a huge letdown after FFX IMO.

I managed to beat it. The only reason I stuck with it is because I held out hope that the game would turn around at some point. It never does so completely.

My main issue was the story...or rather the lack thereof. The game has pretty much zero story until about 3/5 of the way through it. I thought Yuna would be looking for Tidus right at the outset of the game but she spends most of it galavanting around doing menial tasks.

I also could not stand Rikku's brother. His voice was annoying as hell and painful for me to even listen to. That alone practically ruined the game for me and I have never really been one to care about character voices in the past (the last time one bothered me was Megaman's voice in MM8....*shudder*).

So you mean the 20+ hours I was doing it for stops after some point?

Granted the bosses took some thinking but randomencounters was pretty much hold down X until I win

I don't remember finding that to be the case from pretty early in the game - there were some areas with relatively overpowered enemies who took a lot more than constant X-bashing to beat.

maybe I was playing the game wrong... but I always had a white mage in the party and just held x... she healed everyone a bit every turn while the gals did their thing...

ROFL That won't last you too long into the game haha. Eventually the healing vs Attack gap got too large and I had to switch to 3 different attacker types for most battles, throwing in the occasional mage or singer depending on what the monster/boss was weak to.

I have to say that I think X-2 is unfairly underrated by many. It's a solid RPG that attempts to do many new things. While nowhere near the pinnacle of the genre this generation I still feel that it was worth playing through. For those tempted I'd pick it up as it's cheap and before we're swamped with gaming goodness in autumn.

:lol You gotta be a teenager.

I'd put him at nine or ten, myself.

And for people complaining about the "girl power:" The intro movie is about the fruitiest it gets, then after chapter two the game gets very serious (and difficult, although Gun Magic breaks the game.)

Also, for those who complain about the 100% thing...God save your soul if you try out a PC RPG
