General FFX-2 thought...

Actually FFX-2 and Silent Hill 4 were the two big dissapointment sequels this gen for me.

gameplay wise it was good, storywise it had no soul.

Few games I can say that about, only suikoden 4(the other big-sequel disappointment) comes to mind.

And for people complaining about the "girl power:" The intro movie is about the fruitiest it gets, then after chapter two the game gets very serious (and difficult, although Gun Magic breaks the game.)
Uh... the dance competition? "Yunie you should dance!" with those fucking weird ass swamp creature made into instruments? I played through the game 3 times, but there was far more 'girl power' crap than that first intro video. Everytime Rikku squealed "YUNIE!" I cringed, and you're all right... Brother was godawful, too. They didn't ruin the game for me, but I definitely feel that if they had shifted focus more to the Crimson Squad story for awhile to start off, until Yuna really gets going on the hunt for you-know-who, it could have benefitted quite a bit.

Also, I should note that as far as goofy enemies go, the Leblanc Syndicate was a noble effort, but nowhere NEAR as cool or funny as Ultros in FF6.

ROFL That won't last you too long into the game haha. Eventually the healing vs Attack gap got too large and I had to switch to 3 different attacker types for most battles, throwing in the occasional mage or singer depending on what the monster/boss was weak to.

ROFL I did it for 20 hours... I never finished the game... couldn't take the story... but I did play it for 20 hours... doing the same thing for most random encounters...

You live in Japan, shouldn't that be the O button you are holding down?

Plus, if you decide to try out other jobs, you'd very likely want to try out other commands aside from Attack.

This deserves its own thread, 6th replay? I find it very hard to play even a good game a second time after finishing it. In this day and age, there are so many quality games and I've got a huge backlogÂ… kudos to you sir!

PS. I haven't played/bought FF-X yet (hard to find a non-GH version), is playing FF-X 2 first spoiling a lot of FF-X? Is it advisable?

I like getting a lot out of games, so I replay them quite often. In FFX2's case, it was the first game I had for my Japanese PS2, so replaying it wasn't too hard to choose. My new game library is so limited that if I'm not replaying a game, it wasn't worth my purchase.

Yeah I know I got sick of the random encounters. And I am from the states so I still do play the north American games... :) So I can understand what's going on... :D

Oh, okay.

What jobs did you have? Did you play through up to a certain point, or just fight around for 20 hours? I can fully understand holding X on a replay, due to keeping Accessories, Jobs, Result Plates that make you strong, but for the first time, that seems questionable (especially because the White Mage's healing ability becomes pretty unhelpful in Story Level 2 and beyond; easily replaced by an Item Shooter that you can get in SL2).

But then again when I started FFX2, I went right to Macalania Woods because it had the most difficulty stars to start fighting around at.

This game didn't catch me at all.

-Same engine easy to put back in mouth ff10 graphics
-Focus group decision of making a sequels since fans wanted it so much
-Girl power shit all around because it's ala mode and sells
-Bad bad bad soundtrack
-No world map
-No involving and as linear storyline as other traditionnal RPGs. (i felt it's the second world of FF6 but during the whole game)
-Pop music shit (mostly the Britney Spear intro)

The only thing i felt appeal to was the battles but then again i didn't really like the whole costume thing. I reminded me that too much people think they look hot and are worth something because they wear the lastest ala mode clothes. The "image first" feeling of the concept in this battle was turning me off quite a bit.

I don't remember finding that to be the case from pretty early in the game - there were some areas with relatively overpowered enemies who took a lot more than constant X-bashing to beat.

Actually, X-2 was the first FF game I had any trouble with in a long time. Lots of nasty instant-death attacks, Tonberries and the like showing up in chapter 1, foes that alternate between strong magic attacks and stone attacks, before you have any real defense against either.

I never minded the "girl power" motif, since frankly, RPG settings are usually either boring or stupid anyway.

I've just recently played through FFX and FFX-2 back to back, and my opinion is that FFX-2 had the better battle system. I was warned that you would play a lot of dress up, but I never found that to be the case. It might be because my characters were vastly overpowered; I walked all over the world map every chapter and fought as many enemies as possible... heck, I didn't even go to the first hot spot of the game until I was level 20 (that took an extra trip or two down Mithen Highroad) and I finished with each character in the mid-60s. At any rate, Paine was a pure warrior, Rikku was a thief, and Yuna went back and forth between White Mage and Gun Mage, but rarely in battle.

But, in the end, I liked Final Fantasy X so much more. Each area in FFX was new, you never really had to go anywhere twice (and you really couldn't, either, until the end), whereas FFX-2 had mostly the same areas as FFX with subtle improvements, but you had access to everywhere at the beginning of the game. And the story of FFX was more engaging. Say what you will about the linearity of the game, but I preferred it since it meant that the story unfolded with every place you went and with everything that you did. FFX-2's system of hinting at some story here and teasing at some plotline there was a bit lacking.

I am also more than a bit disappointed that the normal ending for FFX-2 didn't bring real closure to the Yuna-Tidus story arch. It would have been nice if at least a tease had been thrown in. After spending so many hours with FFX and then following it up with FFX-2, I thought I deserved to see a happier outcome for the main protagonists of the series. But I didn't get it, and I just don't have the time to give it another run right now. Perhaps down the line.

Ultimately, give me FFX over FFX-2 any day of the week, but I still found FFX-2 highly enjoyable.

I will probably never play this bitch. Doesn't help that I don't give two shits about the characters of FFX.

Game would have been better if they dropped the 100% bullshit, the extra is not worth it anyway. (and for all you purists
You can choose not to revive tidus, if you wanna keep it that way :)
