Geoff Keighley response to an IGN article about NexGen Graphics

Leave it to IGN articles to have the absolutely more short sighted response ever to a flop of a reveal video from Microsoft. They wrap up the entire next console generation by 12 videos of third party cross generation games. If you want to hear decent people from IGN just listen to their podcasts. There is a reason why those folks are forward facing for the brand. Brian, Ryan, Miranda, Max, Destin and all the podcast members can actually string together a sentence and think logically. The reviews folks and the article editors like this dumb dumb are out of sight out of mind for a reason 99% of the time.

I have this though yesterday and one simple thought I have it that if they would have some badge with (runs at XX FPS) it would have been way better.

Next gen will be a huge jump. Sure Memory isn't that big of an upgrade, and GPU isn't many times faster compared to best current, but the CPU upgrade is immense, and the storage speed is incomparable (an unbelievably huge upgrade opening up a lot of opportunities and huge amounts of potential to really change the experience).

Next gen systems seem way more balanced, and much better for their time than last in every way. Current gen you know before they came out that the storage and CPU were going to be bottom tier trash.

You only need to lower your expectations if your expectations are dumb AF, like thinking it's going to be close to the level of a relatively expensive gaming PC.

Remember wallguy? Was one of the first looks at what the 360 could do so it's still early days.

Wait what ? The gpu isn't many times faster than best current . It's not even on bar with 2080 /1080ti ...

unless I understood your wordings wrong Then my apologies

You can't spell ignite without IGN. Microsoft had a shit show so all of next Gen is going to look like current gen. It reminds of the low sales expectations after the Wii U flopped.

You know, before you all jump on a Tuesday hype roller coaster that derails and leaves everyone in tears, he could just be talking in general, guys. Lol.

They're probably right. Games looked great at the beginning of this gen and, while they definitely looked better by the end, we didn't really see the kind of jump we have seen with previous generations. I mean, look at stuff like Killzone: Shadowfall (2013) and InFamous Second Son (2014). They both still completely hold up today.

I doubt the early games on PS5 and XBX are going to look all that much better than stuff like RDR2 and TLOU2, etc.

IGN sucks but Keighley isn't wrong. The game announcement Tuesday is an AA/Indie type game. Keighley basically said it was cool and fun. That's not what you would say to describe a AAA blockbuster. My guess is a new Saints Row game.

Typical IGN tabloid-journalism. I do not take it seriously.
Since Employees are working frm home, i never expected inside xbox event to be anything serious. Add to that, faceless console warriors and microsoft haters went on a rampage.

There will definitely be games coming that are going to look amazing. The end of this new generation will certainly give us games that look well above anything we've seen this current generation. It's just that the gap in easily perceptible differences is shrinking the closer we get to photo-realism. There is still tons of room for visuals to get better and they will. It's just going to take longer and longer for us to see the dramatic differences we saw from earlier generations. Keep an eye on first-party, though. Those will be the studios that really show us what the hardware can do.

I wouldn't get your Hope's up for Tuesday remember how he hyped the last reveal of the game awards last year and all we got was a ps3 looking game?

He's right, though. Basing your opinion of what next gen games will look like off third party launch games is stupid.

Assassin's Creed Unity is still the best looking AC!

I think most people are missing the point here. I don't actually think Keighley will unveil anything that will blow us away on May 12th — I think he's referring to next-gen games he's seen in action around the industry (obviously he's being vague because the games haven't been shown or even announced yet, NDA's, etc).

Think what you will about Keighley but he's one of the most well connected people in the entire gaming industry — he actually knew about Half Life: Alyx for about a year before it was announced.

This forum is so incredibly cynical we automatically point toward the worst case scenario and call everyone an "SJW, a shill, a phony". Lol. Cmon guys, this shit is supposed to be fun.

I think he has a point (simply because it's common sense that first party exclusive graphics will shit all over the announced third party crossgen AA titles), I also think he is not talking about Tuesday but in general. June (PS5) and July (XSX) will make IGN and DF and whoever else pushed that nonsense look like the morons they are).

I can't put my finger exactly on why but I just don't care for Keighly. I know he's done some cool stuff but I just mean mainly as him as a person. He's just one of those corny, uninteresting dudes where I don't see what his appeal could possibly be. He's not funny nor does he strike me as notably intelligent. He doesn't even really read as much of a gamer to me. In interviews I would even say he can come off as mildly condescending. I know he's passionate but he just seems like terrifyingly bland blank slate of a human.

Ah yes. The days of Xbox 1.5

Then Oblivion, Fight Night R3 and Ghost Recon AW came out........which killed that meme real quick.

Problem with that is we already saw Series X's EA's sports game (Madden) and Ubisoft's AAA title (Ass Creed). So I guess that leaves Starfield to save the day.

Or we accept that these are early next gen games, and that its going to take some time to see the full advantages of next gen, just like every other gen before it,

One thing to remember is that the next gen consoles are about as powerful as PCs that can run current-gen games at 4k60 with fairly high settings. Next-gen games aren't current-gen games though.

They'll have more geometry, longer draw distances, more characters on screen, better lighting and more, but something will have to give. I don't expect to see a native 4k60 in the top games, not after we move past the current-gen upgrades. We'll see 4k30, 1800p60, 1800p30, 1440p60, etc..

Anyone still gaming at 1080p will enjoy the graphical upgrades with perfect image quality, but anyone with higher than that hoping for high native resolutions and high framerates might get disappointed later in the generation.

Most games shown on that xbox streamed event were cross gen indie titles and based on that some "games journalist" writes drivel about weak next gen graphics? Oh IGN you say, now it makes sense.

I'm guessing everyone who thinks next-gen won't be a worthy upgrade either 1) did not exist at PS4 & Xbone launch, or 2) also think this gen hasn't been a worthy improvement over the previous

We've already seen how next-gen looks like and I doubt anything that's being shown will surpass how Cyberpunk on PC with ray tracing will look like. It's the same shit every time, they'll most likely show some game in early stages that won't look like that at launch, a linear small game where they can push the visuals to the max. If I'm going to be fuckcing impressed I want to see an open-world game filled with huge details and without limits to where you can enter, not some huge map filled with nothing. And why just stop at visuals? Show me next-gen AI as well if we're at it but that won't happen.

A really great point.

Hopefully things like DLSS and VRS can help mitigate the difference. There's quite a few more tricks in the bag this generation for dealing with demanding games.

If AMD can match DLSS it'd certainly be a big help in improving geometry and other effects while maintaining high resolutions and framerates, but we've yet to see anything from them in that regard, as far as I know

We need to see Microsofts DirectML, and Sony may have their own implementation. Hopefully the full reveals will show us a glimpse of their capabilities in that regard.

what are you guys talking about tuesday afternoon. Tuesday has nothing to do with his comment about an IGN article not aging well.

"Excited to help celebrate the talented students and their games at @USC Games Expo, streaming Tuesday afternoon! "

That is what he was talking about. You guys are hyping things out of control!

With all the shit they've been gathering for the last years, it baffles me how they're still relevant today. I can't take them seriously anymore especially in the reviews department.

I think that as always happened and as IGN said, the first generation of games, and particularly launch games of the next gen, will look pretty close to current gen games. Many of them will even look worse than the prettier current gen games.

Regarding gameplay, I think in most cases there won't be any key change that makes the game different than in previous gen. I think most of them will be just prettier in next gen: most games will be like to move a PC game from medium using HDD to ultra settings using SSD. Other than that, we may see bigger, more dense and detailed worlds.

I remember that Dead Rising and Assassin's Creed added something that we weren't able to do in the previous gen due to the increase in horsepower, but in the current gen mostly everything has been just prettier stuff. I think this generation maybe things like No Man's Sky, Dreams or RDR2 offered stuff that wasn't available in previous generation beyond what its visuals offered.

I think only the few same guys as always, mostly Sony an Rockstar, will push things way beyond previous generation. Maybe I'm wrong, and I think there is potential for innovation thanks to SSD, 3D audio and Dual Sense, but I think most devs will want to support previous gen and PC specially during the earlier years of the generation, so it will be mostly more or the same but prettier.

But yes, I think Sony's AAA will blow our mind.

Correct, but the issue was Microsoft promoted it as our first look to how amazing gameplay would look like on the Xbox Series X.

I blame their PR marketing more than anything.

they have expanded to other areas, like buying humble store.

lol Yeah but they were hardly going to say "Watch our event to see some average looking current gen games with some added next gen features from our partners and indie devs who rarely ever push the visual enveloppe! Multiplats & six month timed exclusives galore!"
Companies will always hype stuff up. At least they didn't blatantly lie about anything. The stuff might not have been gameplay demos but it was at least in-game for the most part.

geoff keighley aka the biggest hype machine there is in the industry. Hed hype a dead horse even

well to be honest, I remember he had said something comparable back in the day about God of War 3. I am still very lively remembering my experience with the finished product: Opening Fight Scene vs. Poseidon. To be honest, his assessment back then was ON POINT. I was blown AWAY with the scene back in the day.....so, yeah, even though sometimes it is tedious listening to him, I am a fond believer of his assessment when it comes to Visual Impact/Fidelity..

Either that or he's seen actual AAA next gen games running from his dev pals and looks at that IGN article and laughs.

Not many people in the industry have the connections and friends he has. I'd take his word over all the 'insiders' combined.
