So are you still preaching that?I've been preaching this for months now. Next-gen = PC this gen. People are in denial.
Edit: Damn, beaten.

I guarantee you Epic ran that demo on current PC hardware a hundred times before they put it on a PS5 dev kit for the first time. If this demo is representative of next gen console graphics simply by virtue of running on a PS5, then it's representative of current PC graphics as well. Can you point me to a PC game this gen that looks like that?

Lol ok big guy he is clearly talking cross generation games and he is correct. One tech demo is not the majority of games lol. From his article:
"Graphics have currently plateaued somewhat when it comes to immediately obvious improvements"
"It's going to be gorgeous, but in a more subtle way than we've come to expect."
"There are graphical improvements happening, but they are somewhat invisible ones"
Tom was talking out his ass. And he got smacked down hard today. And rightfully so. He should man up and admit he was wrong. Instead of trying to get in the last word and looking like a clown.
It would be representative of current PC graphics if someone was targeting just the high-end, which nobody is doing for obvious reasons.I guarantee you Epic ran that demo on current PC hardware a hundred times before they put it on a PS5 dev kit for the first time. That would sound a whole lot more convincing if there were actual PS5 games out there that looked as good as this tech demo. There aren't, though, and until that changes this tech demo is no more representative of what next gen games will look like than it is of what current PC games look like.It would be representative of current PC graphics if someone was targeting just the high-end, which nobody is doing for obvious reasons.
Ah yes. The days of Xbox 1.5
Then Oblivion, Fight Night R3 and Ghost Recon AW came out........which killed that meme real quick.
It seems like he was talking about the initial crop of next gen games ("next-gen games revealed over the next few months"), because he said that he expects first party games to knock peoples socks off. From what the DF guys were saying, we might not see games on UE5 until 2022.From his article:

If you look past your brand loyalty then you'll see vfx is one of the few legit insiders here. Now if you don't like what he says then that's your problem.VFXVetern wrong again? who would have guessed smh. I must say, in my time on Gaf, the only person I've come across who is wrong mor frequently than you are is SenjutsuSage.

Oh and @10TF that UE5 demo is not that impressive for what it's running at![]()
Yeah next gen is totally not going to look better than crackdown 3 at ultra on PC.If you look past your brand loyalty then you'll see vfx is one of the few legit insiders here. Now if you don't like what he says then that's your problem.

VFX an insider? He has less credibility than timdog. Gaf has no insiders. The ones we had in the past departed. If you look past your brand loyalty then you'll see vfx is one of the few legit insiders here. Now if you don't like what he says then that's your problem.

Anyone telling me that UE5 demo isn't impressive is engaging in a level of dishonesty I'm just not interested in right now.
Yeah, we haven't seen any ps5 games so they might not look like this. The thing though is that we have current PC games and we also have eyes. No PC game looks like this.this tech demo is no more representative of what next gen games will look like than it is of what current PC games look like.
That was not playable. In cutscenes it has been surpassed. This is playable.Sony showed off back in 2013 was a good indication of what PS4 games would look like? It's been 7 years and no game has gotten close. You'd think people would have learned from that.
I have to admit, I am eating a bit of crow as well at the moment. From his article:
"Graphics have currently plateaued somewhat when it comes to immediately obvious improvements"

He never did say that, though. He just said "next gen = PC this gen", which is more or less true in terms of capability. Current PCs would run this just fine, and some would even run it better. So maybe we need to doubt ps5 games will look like this, that's true, but saying that current PC games look like this is just a big lie.
I have my doubts about just how much this demo being "playable" is indicative of what we can expect for actual games. The first thing I noticed when I watched the video was that while the environments looked extremely good, the player character didn't. In fact, she wouldn't look out of place in a current gen game, to the point where she almost seems cartoonish in comparison to the world surrounding her. Apart from her, some bats, bugs, and birds (which were so tiny/far away that you couldn't tell how detailed they were), a bit of flapping cloth and some falling rocks, nothing in the entire demo was animated. All the stuff that looked really good was static geometry. That was not playable. In cutscenes it has been surpassed. This is playable.
So, just to be clear. When you say Current PCs what do you mean? Is my laptop that I bought three years ago a current PC? Is a macbook air a current PC? That's what I'm getting at, high-end PCs built this year might run this demo but not low or middle range PCs,. When "next gen = PC this gen" is said it includes a wide range of hardware, some would be able to run it, some not. That's what I'm sayingCurrent PCs would run this just fine, and some would even run it better.
If it runs as well or better on hardware you can currently buy, then that's enough. Whether or not every single PC or laptop you can buy right now can run it is besides the point. Someone who talks about PC performance on a gaming board obviously isn't talking about Macbooks or 5-year-old Dell laptops, and it's disingenuous at best to assume that they are.So, just to be clear. No he did say that. Every time someone said thered be a big visual jump he said no there wont be. He said we only are bandwidth limited. He said nextgen games will only look like current pc games at max setting. He said the ssd wouldnt improve graphics. He never did say that, though. He just said "next gen = PC this gen", which is more or less true in terms of capability. Current PCs would run this just fine, and some would even run it better.
Yeah, I have no idea about any of that. I don't really follow individual posters, so all I have to go by is what he posted posted right here in this thread. No he did say that. Every time someone said thered be a big visual jump he said no there wont be. He said we only are bandwidth limited. He said nextgen games will only look like current pc games at max setting. He said the ssd wouldnt improve graphics.
I think he may have been hinting about the Unreal 5 demo that was shown.
