President Bush, 92, was admitted to intensive care at Houston Methodist Hospital to address "an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia. Doctors performed a procedure to protect and clear his airway that required sedation," his spokesman, Jim McGrath, said in a statement.

Barbara Bush also was admitted to the hospital Wednesday morning as a precaution after "experiencing fatigue and coughing," McGrath said in the same statement.

Best wishes to them both. Hope they recover well

What a shame, hope they are able to bounce back.

I've always respected Bush Sr., and from what we know of him, he seems like a very disciplined man, and an open thinker. Some of the work he and Clinton did together and the friendship that formed from that really showed character.

And Barbara is a spitfire! She was never one to back down, and always spoke her mind. She has my respect!

Damn pneumonia at that age is pretty life threatening. Maybe we could negotiate a few more years for Bush in exchange for Trump, Pence, and their entire cabinet?

I can't say I'm a fan of Bush Sr.'s political work but he is most definitely in the category of politicians that I disagree with but harbor a degree of respect for (unlike, incidentally, his sons). Having said that I wouldn't exactly be rooting for him to get pneumonia anyway. Hope he gets better soon.

I don't agree with a lot of his policies when he was President, but when you look at modern-day Republicans, Bush Sr seems like a very different league of person.

I'm forever reminded of a story of when Estonia gained re-independence and our President at the time, Lennart Meri met with Bush Sr (while still President) at the White House, and when the discussion turned to good fishing locales, our President actually took out a pencil and scribbled on one of the globes in the oval office, highlighting a spot in Kamchatka, a river he claimed was great for fishing trips.

Apparently the next time he was to visit, they had put the globe on top of a cupboard or shelf to prevent any impromptu scribbles.

This doesn't sound good.

Speaking of which, is the Queen doing better? She was quite ill for a while. Not a good time for old world leaders.

George H.W. Bush was the best Republican President since Eisenhower and he was way better than Jimmy Carter.

He is smart, tempered and responsible. I respect him allot.

I just wish more Republicans of today were more like him and less like Trump

So that's why he was only given 1 term. The worst Republicans last 2. Makes me real concerned about how many terms Trump will get

I'll always a soft spot for the Bush family. I hope they pull through. We need them around for a little while longer.

12 years of party fatigue + early 90s recession

no matter the positives in the first years, voters will harp on the negatives of the final year and months.

the economy was shit a the turn of the decade (worldwide). Voters wanted change and it was an uphill battle to win re-election during a recession why high interest rates and a manufacturing sector fall

Only thing I know about Bush Sr. is he ordered the Panama Invasion. Can't say I hate him for that though, thanks to him we managed to restore our democracy.

And Ross Perot.

While one could argue some of his social policies (though keep in mind it was 1988), he was a well reasoned man who thought before action, put Country over politics, and was one of the best "Foreign Policy" POTUS we have ever had.

CNN just said he is now in ICU w a breathing tube. Hadn't had this done before medically, so it may be serious. Last bit is speculation but that's an update.

Yeah that does sound serious. Given how really old couples seem to go, they will either both pull through, or they'll both pass away from this.

not on a ventilator though?

at least he's had a really long life so far. pretty sad he had to witness his party succumb to pure madness.. hope he pulls through and gets to see Trump and his cronies fall.

Incredibly Naive
Wasn't alive for his presidency, but he seems like a good guy with an open mind. I admire their strong stance against Trump. I've said this before but my parents have been lucky enough to meet him in Maine a few times and always talk about how kind he is. Seems like a good dude. So sad if they both go at the same time, but in a way, maybe it's happier for both that way?

Damn, I hope he's able to pull through. We need a strong voice like his to help push back against Trump's bullshit.

While I wish George and Barbara all the best and a speedy recovery, I don't see them a strong voice pushing back against Trump's bullshit even in good health. During the election Bush Sr. wanted to keep his apparent support for Hillary as quiet as possible. I think they'd rather remain polite figureheads.

Clinton ran a great campaign compared to Bush, who admitted he hated campaigning.

Hope both recover.

He was 1 term because his campaign slogan was "Read my lips, no new taxes" then had to raise taxes.

Anyway hope they pull through, I disagree with him politically on many things but I can respect the man and what he tried to do and respect his humanitarian efforts since his retirement.

I think the bigger issue was that Ross Perot ran an extraordinarily successful 3rd party campaign. Perot got nearly 20 million votes! That was almost 19% of the total voter turnout! If Perot doesn't run, I think HW gets reelected pretty easily, as Perot stole far more from his voter base than he did Clinton's.

That's a good sum up. He was also caricatured effectively as an out-of-touch Ivy League wimp. Which is really sad since he was shot down as a pilot over the Pacific in WW2 and survived. But that's politics in the age of television. That said, he was out of touch with Joe Sixpack (he'd been VP or Pres. for twelve years, so it's understandable, but he also was old money east coast Ivy League), and then Gov. Clinton did a great job highlighting that.

Also the 90s economic boom started the year of the '92 election, but it was too late to save him.

Minus that whole Willie Horton thing that helped him get into office, and the Panama invasion, he didnt seem like a bad guy.

Yes, this is the Iran-Contra, thousands of dead South American civilians Bush.

Sad to see people here who have no idea the fucked up shit he did.

True, and Obama and the rise of drone strikes have cost a lot of innocent civilian lives, while Clinton's three strikes policies have imprisoned millions of black men. No presidency, no matter how beloved, is ever taintless.

Like, this is textbook whataboutism.

But you're also not wrong.

It shouldn't be excused.
