Get your E3 Hotels quick

Staying at the Universal City Hilton. If anyone wants to share the cost of a room, PM me. I can't guarantee we'll have space, but there's a chance some of my friends who were planning on coming won't be able to make it.

Wait...

Some of you guys need a place to stay...and I need a way to get into E3. This could prove most beneficial. I officially offer free room and board for the week of E3 if exchange for a way of me getting in. As media.
 
Just a warning -- staying @ Universal City without a car == expensive. Cab ride is easily $20-40 each way depending on the time of day.
 
Anyone know how long it take to go from Venice beach to the convention center? I'm planning to stay at a cousins house
 
Things have been sold out for a while now. E3 itself books nearly all the hotel space downtown and then only offers it to people willing to pay anything.

That said, I'll probably be staying in another dump this year in the ghetto areas around the center (not that the whole downtown isn't a ghetto in itself, but its "more") with the rest of the AMN gang. I doubt we'll ever go back to staying in a place like the New Otani two years ago (not because we didn't like it, but because we can't reserve it anymore, or at least, thats what I've been lead to believe).

Anyway, its right across the street from the place we stayed last year. I think this one's a Quality Inn & Suites, where as last year was a Confort Inn & Suites. Or its reversed. :D
 
Downtown was mostly taken up by the show exhibitors months in advance already. Luckily I acted quickly and picked one up a few blocks from the convention center.

The subway stops right there.
 
I booked mine a couple of months of ago :) Its a bit further out, it aint "downtown" but its on the subway line so it wont take that long to get there.

Im in the same hotel as a couple of other nintendo sites too :lol DS Wifi FTW

Depends on when you go, I live in Culver and it takes me about 30 minutes at 7am.

Wow, you're not kidding. 5 minute walk to the convention center and cheap rates. Still have spots open too, I just setup a reservation there instead.

Who cares? I already reserved our room. This just means easy GAF meetups and late-night gaming sessions.

Yeah, the place is a dive, but for the price and location, I can live with it.
 
It's LA -- shouldn't be too hard finding a place somewhere along the subway line. Taking a cab anywhere is ludicrous...

I've stayed at $40/night flophouses that are less than 4-5 blocks from the convention center, too. That sort of thing you usually won't find on Expedia though ;)
 
It is a complete and total dive. Was afraid to sleep in it the first night... window unit died on the second. That place sucks more than you could possibly imagine, but if you absolutely need somewhere cheap or have no choice...


Don't believe any photos you see of the interior of the place.
 
Ha ha, this quote from the tripadvisor.com review of the Stillwell is money:

"There was an element in the lobby that made it feel like a residential hotel for the down and out."

I've never stayed there, but I've been in to visit friends before... and... yeah... the lobby is a hoot. Reminded me of the lobby from that dive motel in the first Highlander film that Kurgan was staying at.
 
This is excellent, I will organize shifts to protect the GAF members who stay there.

We'll start at 10pm outside the rooms, two hour shifts. Bring sharp objects.
 
I will say, there's a certain charm to staying there. Maybe it's because I've become desensitized to it after so many years, but it definitely gives you stories to tell.

EDIT - It's really not that bad. It's not in a terrible area, and in the five years I've stayed there, I've never had an issue in terms of safety or theft.
 
Heh, I just googled the Stillwell, and here's some reviews on it from yahoo users.
Were calling the Health Department

The photos that you show look nothing like the real rooms, lounge etc. The room we stayed in had filthy carpet, broken furniture, a tiny bathroom covered in rust. There was an old condom hanging from the fire sprinkler in our room. We felt unsafe and incredibly angry that the photos and the advertisement for this hotel was such a misrepresentation of what this facility actually is. We left and stayed at the Wilshire Grand. We will also be contacting the health department and letting them know about the horrible conditions.

If you value your life, you'll avoid this place.

They had no parking. Upon arriving, we had to park in a lot next to them for about 10 dollars overnight. After waiting for the receptionist to take a break from talking to her friends, we checked in and were given a room on the top floor. The elevator to the top floor sounded like it was struggling to do so and smelled of a combination of weed and mold. Yum.

The hallways looked decent, but upon opening the door to our room, we realized it was only a facade. The room had two beds in it. We asked for one, but whatever. The beds took up the majority of the room and made for very little space to put our bags. The TV was unplugged because the wall outlet it had been plugged into was worn down to the point that a plug would no longer remain in it without falling out. The door between the room next to us looked as though it had been kicked in from our side at some point as there was a splint of wood by the lock that was jarred out into our room.

Then there was the bathroom. It smelled like urine. The toilet wouldn't flush (the flushing mechanism was rusted). The cold water, when turned on, sputtered and shot air at first as though it hadn't been turned on in months. Needless to say, we let it run for a while before using it.

We had an event we attended at night. We made the mistake of leaving our key in the room as we rushed out to catch a taxi. Upon returning, we asked the attendant at the front desk (who hadn't seen us yet and couldn't have known who we were) if we could get a key to our room. Without questioning it, he handed us another key. No "ok, let me find you on our guest list" or "we'll send someone up to let you in." No, just "here's another key, stranger." Needless to say, we double-locked our door that night.

I won't even get into some of the possible safety hazards... Bottom line: Avoid this place at all costs. For 5 dollars more you can stay at a generic hotel and feel more comfortable than this place.

Is the holiday Inn on Highland sold out? It's a quick walk to the Subway.

This Best Western is a little farther, but it's in a decent neighborhood and the diner downstairs is the one from Swingers.

I found a new place to stay this year, it's down the street from the good Brazillian BBQ place and near the Denny's/IHOP/Rite Aid and about a block or so from the 101 onramps. It's maybe 2 miles or so from where we used to stay every E3 since it's return to LA, so if it's good...
 
I booked 2 rooms at the Liberty Hotel at hollywood/highland back in like November; this little model/hostel/hotel only has 24 rooms, so I'd imagine it's all sold out by now lol

Room in The Standard confirmed last August. Which Standard? Both of them, actually. I'll decide closer to the show. Most likely Sunset.

One of the places I work for (NYAV Post, home of where Venture Bros. Season 2 was dubbed), a few people came out from and we were all going to go to Fogo de Chao. Then someone they knew recommended this place down on Wilshire called M-Grill. It was half the price and not bad at all. Not too far from our hotel, either. (We were accompanied by the incredibly cute Stephanie Sheh. Mmm...)

Amusing side note - I took an extra red/green disc that was on our table and donated it to the Katamari ball at E3. Almost every piece of news coverage (including the one on DirecTV which is still sitting on my Tivo along with a bunch of other stuff I need to watch/clean off) from E3 which covered the ball, you can see my little red disc with the "M" on it. :)

I'm gonna have to check that place out.

There's a surpsingly decent Churascaria buffet in the 3rd and Fairfax farmers market and a dope, little Brazillian cafe called Tropicalia Grill opened up on Hillhurst in Los Feliz -- no steaks, but good fish, plantains, etc. A nice place to grab a Brahma if you're in that neck of the woods.
