So, first-time director, bad writer, underwhelming character design. Where's Kamiyama when you need him?
But Kamiyama is a bad writer and a bad director! Not that I'm expecting this to be better than SaC. Something about the overall production is giving me bad vibes, esp since P.IG recently aired the disappointing Psycho-Pass.

Not really digging the new design. And based on this thread, the rest of it doesn't sound good either.

People complaining about bare butt Motoko should stay the FUCK away from Man Machine Interface.

Shirow has turned into a lecherous old man.

Turned? This is the guy who drew ordinary nurses wearing fetish gear in the original manga.

Interested because it's more Ghost in the Shell and I'm a big fan. But the Director/Writer and artwork is already lowering my interest.

I like the design of the main character. The premise of the Ghost in the Shell movie and series really interest me but the ridiculous design of the main character always prevented me from watching them. Maybe I'll check that new movie/series/whatever out.

Fair enough, but he really went off the rails after OG GitS. I mean, even Appleseed had its fair share of T&A, but Man Machine Interface was one step removed from porn at times.

So is this going to be a stand-alone series, or do I need to go through all of SAC?

Yes, I realize the irony of that question, you know what I mean.

Sounds like it'll be a different universe (similar to how the manga, films and SAC are all in different universes). But honestly, SAC is incredible. You'd do yourself a disservice if you like GitS and don't watch it!

Amazing news!! Can't wait! I hope it's a tv serial. Interested in what themes they develop. Has anyone read Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro? I've always felt that if they could have easily replaced clones with robots and turned it into an anime. Similar to Eve no Jikan I'd like to see them go into the morality of android/human interactions and how cyborgs factor into that. Alternatively, I'd be interested in looking at how the series traditionally portrays cyborgs (as actual incorporation of machines into a body) versus how cyborgs exist in the real world (for example you are a cyborg because you are "connected" to all the machines around you like your computer, mobile phone, etc).

edit: I don't see what's the big deal with her outfit. It looks realistic. Would you rather there be zippers and angel wings?

Excited for something new from the franchise, might be a good time for me to watch the movie, ova and series all over again.

Well the thing about that..!

That's why I said not to quote it! Lol. I already tried reducing it with quotes, didn't work! :p

Yeah, took it out as soon as I saw. I liked her outfit in the other anime. I know people complain about the whole no pants thing, but IIRC they resolved that in the second season where she always used a full jumpsuit.

No he isn't! Eden of the East just sucked.

There was a full coloured lesbian orgy scene featuring Motoko and two of her friends in the original manga >_>
And supposedly it's a lesbian scene only because he didn't want to draw nude men >_>

I dont like that art at all. Its not even the clothing. The character, as a whole just doesnt look all that great. Like another poster said...she looks so tame or something.
Hopefully its just a bad picture.

I love SAC so Im hoping this can be just as good. Im still going to watch it. Hurry up February 12th.

He's not a bad director, but I kinda question his ability to write. Especially after watching Re:Cyborg. His ideas are very pseudo-Oshii, but lack something which makes it unique, instead it just feels like a fanboy copy of better ideas.

Watch the movies, her design in them is much more tasteful than the television series.

I remember grabbing that particular book when I was 15 or so. I nosebled all over the place.

The only thing about the image I don't like is how she looks skinny and petite compared to previous incarnations. I don't get a sense from that image that she could kick anyone's ass.

That said, I don't know anything about the context of this new show so I can't give a final judgement beyond my first out of context impression. Maybe it works for this version of the show. Who knows.

Both the design and the title of the show seems to suggest they might be doing a young Mokoto origin story of sorts. We'll find out in a month.

She's a full prosthetic cyborg. She doesn't need bulk to produce force. Also, maybe she's younger (which is what I'd guess) - they go into "growing" into new bodies in SAC2.

So no 3rd Gig then? :(

I won't care if it's of similar quality though.

More GitS anime gets me exited either way

As much as I like SAC I feel that the story is over. I'd like to see them tackle new ground.

Bigger is still more powerful, since prosthetics operate with our laws of physics. But if it's an origin story, it's probably an earlier body like you said, before she got top of the line stuff for the black ops work.

Yeah, he's definitely a worse writer than a director. My opinion about his direction comes down to more of a personal preference, he's definitely competent, but his writing is the main thing about him I consider to be out-right bad, even his best work in GitS: SAC was filled with awkward exposition and half-baked ideas never really explored beyond their basic level etc. Eden of the East was probably a example of EVERYTHING that was bad about kamiyama writing in full force. He's definitely better when he has other writers working with him like dai sato.

Yeah, I know. I'm sure they'll get in to it. I just think one of the cool parts about Makoto's design is that she is usually depicted as a bit physically intimidating. Either way, it's not a deal breaker for me whether it's addressed or not. I'll still give it a watch.

But materials too. So as technology progresses you could have stronger materials that require less space. Plus, it's Japan so smaller is better. But that'd reading too into it. I feel fairly confident it's likely an origin story.

Yeah after years of a more "muscular" body it's a bit odd, but we'll see. It doesn't bother me in and of itself. I'm just psyched there's something new in the series. An origin story is fertile ground for exploration.

The mech suits were always shown to be stronger and more powerful in combat (more powerful weapons, thicker armor, more limb strength), so the heroes had to defeat them with better skills and agility. They couldn't take the mechs head on without a think tank or anti-tank weaponry.

The nudity in the films is done tastefully.

And completely unnecessarily, given that the manga didn't have this.

More Ghost in the Shell finally is a good thing. I just hope it's at least decent considering the writer...

Would have preferred a 3rd season of SAC instead also since they teased it a few years back, in that respect this is a bit disappointing.

Ugh. First time director and bad writer.

Where's my Oshii GITS 3?

But...it has new Cornelius music, so it's not all bad. I wish the guy was releasing a sixth album instead. Sensuous was too long ago.

Where for art thou Ms. Yoko Kanno?

It just won't be the same GITS without your sublime contributions to the soundtrack. :(
Fortunately, they're not trying to make the same GITS. Kenji Kawai made fantastic music for the GITS movies and I've no doubt Cornelius will do the same here.

Bigger is still more powerful, since prosthetics operate with our laws of physics.

This was also kinda addressed in a SAC episode. Batou tells her she should go for a nice big male prostetic body to be stronger. (though in the series she's never really depicted less capable than him anyway)

Mh, I didn't have that impression. But I agree that something fresh could be potentially better than adding more to SAC. It's just that I adore the tone and universe in both seasons (the SAC movie was also kinda ok).

edit: oh, just saw the music credit. Not sure what to think, I really liked the stuff by Yoko Kanno.

Shirow has turned into a lecherous old man.

You referring to the original uncensored Japanese version of the manga or the brutally cut Americanized Dark Horse published version?

Yep, it got so bad they had to edit panels and panels of the manga to adapt to tamer American tastes.

Besides, I dont think shes even naked when using thermoptics. Pretty sure they confirmed it to be an extremely tight suit. You can even see the color change between it and her skin, iirc.

This is pretty much why Im feeling down about this news right now. I really wanted a 3rd GIG. Maybe one day.

I'm sure they could do something with SAC, just after the film I felt the characters had already evolved to a good stopping point, and there was good resolution with them. I'd rather they go to a new universe because they could develop them and the world in new directions without disturbing the way the characters had already progressed in SAC.

Euro version, so I guess it's a straight translation from the Japanese books.

Pretty crazy stuff for a serious manga.

Yeah, Motoko is certainly more capable than Batou in pretty much everything except brute strength.

Yes, you are correct. Except I don't think she wears that suit during the opening scene of the movie. The other two times she strips down she is wearing heavy body armor and does so to gain agility.
Whatever you say Fw.
It's the truth, or at least close to the truth.
