Does anybody know if there is any footage filmed with IMAX cameras? Wondering if I need to go to a real IMAX or if the other premium screens will be enough.

Just came out.

Better than Power Rangers atleast.

Despite being Part-Weeb, I never seen original.

But the sci-fi and effects were nice and the story had something unlike Power Rangers.

I thought the cast were okay, but the writing was slightly shoddy. Beat Takeshi is always a delight in films.

Plus, I'm not one of them Scar-Jo Fanatics (she ain't my type really), but she turned in a performance I would deem as "passable".

Of the films I seen in the last 2-3 Weeks, I could rate them as:

1. Get Out.
2. A Silent Voice.
2. Kong Skull Island.
4. Ghost In The Shell.
5. The Teaser Which Cineworld Put On For Beauty And The Beast To Turn My Phone Off Before The Films.
6. Power Rangers.

Caught a screening of it last night. I'm a sucker for cyberpunk, so it was worth it for me to just go see the production design. It was excellent.

Otherwise, it was... okay. The movie felt plodding, and I didn't find any novelty in seeing the hallmark set pieces done "in real life." I really wished the writers trusted the audience more. There's times where the dialogue just bends over backwards to explain stuff. They've could've also pushed the world-building a bit more.

Also, thank god for Togusa and Aramaki. If it weren't for them, the only asians in the movie would be Yakuza.

I still don't get this. In this age of 80s/90s nostalgia and reboots of classic properties how in god's fucking name is GitS risky? The GitS aesthetic is literally Blade Runner run through the cultural filter of the 90s.

This is not a reboot. This is an adaptation of a cult niche manga of the 90s (whose sequel was terrible). There is no nostalgia in the casual crowd needed to pay for that budget. GITS is not a classic property for most of the public.

I am very happy this is made, and it will probably make more money in retail BR/DVD release (this is geek food) to justify the investment.

What would not be risky is a reboot of a US Tv Show of the 80/90s (like magnum or Ateam - already done).

Went in expecting it to be mildly dissapointing. The first five minutes or so I was mildly whinging... But then I actually started to really like it. Just a bit sad they abbreviated the
garbarge truck
scene, which I thoight had great tension in the 95 movie.

So, I am back from watching the movie. I am huge Ghost in the Shell fan, I own everything from the limited edition Laserdisc collection to the artbooks.

And I am on the same page as Chris Stuckmann about this movie, it was great. The visuals are amazing and it is like a live action anime. The 3D effects are well used and if you have the chance, watch it in 3D. Also on a technical level this movie is flawless. It is heartbreaking that you have to mention that nowadays, but it is strange to watch a movie in which the director knows how to compose a shot, edit a sequence, use colors and how to cut an action sequence.

The actors are doing are very good job. Scarlett plays the major like in the anime, actually sometimes her eyes are even moving like in the anime or the series. Takeshi Kitano as Aramaki is fucking amazing and it probably one of the highlights. What I liked was the relationship between the major and Batou, it feels way more natural than in the 95 anime, you get why they have so much respect for each other.

Also Scarlett is not a walking exposition like the anime major. Which of course is based in the weaker story. The movie is about identity, not about humanity like in the anime. This of course was already done a lot of times in Hollywood movies, so this is the weakest point of the movie. However the background story is nicely made and they actually put a lot of emotion into the part which makes a lot of people so mad. Two people next to me had tears in their eyes during that sequence. Still it is nowhere near as political or philosophical as the original.

The world building is excellent. You always believe, that this could all exist. Everything feels real even the heavy sci-fi stuff. This is also the case, because they show the world to you. Like in the 95 anime, you are taken along to see this world of tomorrow. The fan service is well made. Nowhere near as stupid as in Star Wars or Ghostbusters. There are tons of small references to the manga, anime and series. Also there is a meta level and I find I very strange that nobody, not a single reviewer has mentioned that. The movie is about echoes. The major see glitches and echoes from her past. The director is using shots from the anime or series to use them as echoes and even in the score there are echoes from the 95 anime score. So they also play with the hardcore fans as the audience as they play with the major in the movie.

So I liked the movie a lot and so did my friends. I wonder where this will end, but up until now, this movie is by far the best anime adaptation ever.

P.S. I don't know who said that there is a trans phobic joke in there, but that is total bs.

Just bought a copy of Innocence. I'll give it watch after I get through Miss Hokusai. I'm not going to bother with the live action film but it at least it got me off my ass to start buying the blurays and manga.

The live action movie is better than Innocence, actually a lot better.

I know. What the fuck. The guy actually speaks what he thinks! He has a different opinion, he should be burnt at the stake! Witchcraft! Darkness!

Hollywood is a sexist, racist, old and conservative fuckhole full of old farts sitting on the money. It was build on white and jewish money (China is involved now). It is still what it has always been. How the fuck can I twist my words so you can understand that I agree with you? I am only saying what I see, I do not agree with Hollywood. I am not part of it, yet you crucify me like I'm Stalin.

All I'm saying is that there might not be Asian-American actresses at the moment who can pull up a job in a niche 120 million sci-fi flick based on an anime. It needs sex to pull that minimum from the box office. That sex is ScarJo. It most definitely isn't some random b-list actress. That is fucking all I have to say. That is not racist. I know Hollywood is full-blown KKK madhouse, it's like 'murica fuck yeah in k-mart doing Kumbaya while smoking crack. Awful place.

So there are no "random B-List" Asian actresses that are as sexy as Scalett Johansson? The fuck?

The reason people are calling you racist is because every time you're proven wrong you bend over backwards and move the goalposts to find new excuses about why they couldn't hire an Asian actress, despite the fact that they apparently wanted one so badly they were willing to try digital yellowface.

You claimed there were no Asian-American actresses to play the role. You were then presented with several options which you just handwaved away becasue reasons.

Then you said there were no Asian-American actresses who had "put in the work" to deserve leading a film. To which you were presented with a fuckton of evidence of white people who hadn't "put in the work" yet still got cast as leads of million dollar action films while well known Asian-American actors have to fight for scraps.

Then for some reason you rounded back to the claim about there being no Asian-American actresses... And now you've landed on there being no Asian-American actresses who are sexy enough to play the role. Once that gets proven wrong I'm sure you'll find some new spot to set up those goalposts.

eh, I don't think the films approach is a good fit for me regardless. It's a shame as it really looks nice in terms of visuals in the trailers outside of the costumes. I'm also not down with Hollywood's game of racial musical chairs. I'm not going to see Homecoming and I'm not going to see Ghost in the Shell. Just how it is really.

Got to see this tonight, not really feeling to get in-depth with my overall impressions right now so I'll keep it short. Its a pretty average film. The opening scene is probably the most captivating scene, with solid choreography and good camera work. Most of the budget clearly went into the visuals, but it's not enough to cover up the rest of the films flaws. Story isn't served well by it's pacing, and most characters within it fall flat, I blame that entirely on how the scripts written. Scarjo's performance however was pretty good despite how average the rest of the film is.

Just saw it. Holy shit. One million times worse than I thought it would be. PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS.

The absolutely IRONY of this literally being a ghost of a better movie in a prettier shell.

The music was great, and they made good use of the iconic chorus from the original. That's the only good thing I can say.

The subplot they added was so goddam embarrassing. I really wish they would have just done a shot for shot remake of the original.

Question for those who have seen it:
Why does Batou have his eyes replaced in the movie as opposed to prior to the events of the story?

damn i was sort of hoping that this wouldn't be mediocre yet of course it has to be.

Just bought a copy of Innocence. I'll give it watch after I get through Miss Hokusai. I'm not going to bother with the live action film but it at least it got me off my ass to start buying the blurays and manga.

Innocence is awesome. You did good.

just watched solid state society (completly forgot that it existed, i should be ashamed), and it was amazing, a pretty good reboot of the 95 movie! I'm not going to bother to watch the live action, especially after reading the story spoilers!

the trailers didn't impress me with the actions scenes either

Spidey Homecoming? What's wrong with that?

It sounds like the movie (GitS) is pretty as hell, but doesn't have much else going for it. I'll watch it when it's on HBO Go or whatever.

The director will go on to do great things if this doesn't sink 'em.
Of course it won't sink him. Curiosity is getting the best of me. Also I'm in the mood to watch a movie in theaters. The good news is this movie reminded me to buy the Deluxe Edition of the first manga when I get paid. I'm mostly getting it for Shirow's art.

About Batou...
When I saw his arm was augmented during the eye upgrades part of the film I was like yaaaas we're going to see him blast a fool.
Nope :(

I feel like this was a good starting point for more films, if it's even successful enough.
It doesn't need one, it's a self contained story but they could explore much more.

I'd also like to see them explore more with
stuff like the Laughing Man, hacking people with cybernetic implants/eyes/brain augments and such, rather than generic bad guy we saw here. We saw parts of that already, but it to evolve a bit more.
Doesn't have to be that specifically, but yeah.

Exposition is what, well not ruined but was the worst part of it for me.
I understand they don't have a series to run through hours and hours of story and want to bring it to a new/different market. I want to see what they can do now they don't have to do that.

Oh last thing, the shelling sequence
So, so disappointed they didn't use the score teasered, it gave me chills, the actual result? Not at all.
FFS feels like a really bad choice there, the impact it has is much more.

I just got back from it and overall I enjoyed it. The early movie especially had a Michael Bay transformers level of audience distrust. I thought it got better as it went on. Scarlett and Asbaek had great chemistry. Chin Han shouldve had more screentime as he was excellent in what little he got.

I thought the reworked scenes they took from the anime managed to fit in well with the different story they were telling. This different story definitely skips right past the point of the anime, but it wasnt bad other than the pointless and weak villain.

Question for those who have seen it:

He's forced to after being injured in an explosion, after he and the Major walk into a trap set by Kuze.

Just got back from a 7pm showing, and like it well enough. Some lovely visuals to be seen here, downright stunning at times. The plot was serviceable; a retread of the original film's with some elements from other interpretations blended in to create an homage that never quite stands out from the material being revered. The action fell a little flat for me; it looked nice to be sure, but it was also lifted completely from the source material with little/no variation, and to be honest I didn't find the original's action all that impressive either (GitS without Tachikomas just doesn't have that extra oomph!). Some surprises here would have been nice. Scarlet's performance... there were times I felt she was doing something with her movements where she seemed uncomfortable in her own skin. Like, heavy and graceless I guess. It came off a little odd, perhaps inhuman even, but given the nature of the role I'd say it worked.

Stay ignorant lighthouse 👌

I feel like that's all I need. Assuming it's as good as the anime version.

Definitely not as emotional. But the CG was cool.

I'm still reeling over the fact that they tried to
justify this film's whitewashing
by turning
it into a plot point
. What a fucking insult.

What's more baffling is someone thought that was a good idea to write and then execute like did they honestly not expect a backlash when you not only double down on it but actually try to make it a plot point?

It was so cringe inducing. A guy at my screening literally shouted "are you fucking kidding me!" when they
first said Motoko.

That seems better than just ignoring the issue. It feels like they were trying to acknowledge the source material even if they were going in a different direction.
