This movie has to fail, not even because of the quality of the movie. Just like for the same people Ghostbusters had to succeed and that was a real Train wreck.

People wanted Ghostbusters to succeed because the controversy was bullshit, and a lot of people want this film to fail because the controversy is not bullshit.

Thus far both films seem to have come to "they're alright but not as good as the original so why bother remaking them anyway".

Oh man, the first time the film starts an exposition about shells. And ghosts...

Also, I don't know why Beat Takeshi was cast in this film. "Please watch our movie, Japan!"

I have a feeling this will be a decent flick, but from the spoilers I just read the whitewashing discussion will only get worse.

If you also need to know (imho mild spoilers, because no actual plot discussed): https://twitter.com/i/moments/846753296073342977

This shit is just weird. Like it just reads like something someone would have made up when the casting was announced to piss people off, but nah it's the actual plot of the movie. Insane.

Is this an open spoilers thread?

The shelling sequence
is there, but it's abridged, not the whole sequence they showed at the Tokyo event, and set to different music that hints at the original music from time to time.

What!? So its starting to look like Paramount edited this movie down to the bare essentials. That fucking blows.

Will wait for the Chin Han Cut on BD.

They even gave her another name
Mira Killian or something like that during the time she doesn't know about her real past
to try throw you off.

Considering people who have liked what they've seen leading up to release are being called idiots and racists on this very forum, I can't blame him for his reaction.

Okay I'm serious now. Does this actually happen or are you just exaggerating to try and make a bad point. Because we definitely don't let people call other users idiots and racists just for -liking how a movie looks-. Don't throw accusations like that around if it isn't something that is actually happening.

Just got back from seeing it. Feeling pretty mixed about it right now.
  • Fantastic visuals and gorgeous world scenery
  • There is some neat action throughout it and it's shot well enough
  • But the action sequences lifted from original film doesn't really do anything interesting or better than the source and tends to feel like pale imitations most of the time
eg The Water Fight and Tank fight.
  • Scarlett Johansson was pretty good if a tad stiff heh and she had some good chemistry with Pilou Asbaek.
  • Takeshi Kitano was also pretty great in the time they gave him.
  • Plot wise though it was pretty thin and still unsure what to think of certain plot revelations. Plus boring generic villain
    and motive.

    Major Spoilers
  • Not quite what to think about the the whole Mira/Motoko reveal. I'll have to sleep on it but it's weird that they went in that direction especially after all the controversy plaguing the film since they announced the cast. Not the best.
  • Though the mum was surprisingly accommodating at having Johansson come into her apartment stare at her awkwardly whilst asking her questions about her dead "daughter" before leaving in a huff heh.

Most disappointing thing for me though was the score by Clint Mansell and Lorne Balfe. Lacked anything really memorable and was just there for the most part not really adding much to the film. The new
shelling sequence
suffered the most from this.
It feels pretty much on par with Rupert Sanders previous film Snow White and the Huntsman. Solid enough film with great visuals but a pretty mixed bag plot wise.

Come on guys give me at least something to be excited about......

I'm usually not as picky as most gaffers when it comes to films so I hope I still enjoy it overall.

It looks pretty amazing visually and there is some solid action throughout it.

Gross.

Sounds a studio meddled film through and through with a shot of typical white washing in its many forms. White washing being a plot point is fucking hilarious.

How hard it is it to respect the IP?

The sad there is there was obviously a reverence for the original, visually.

I just rewatched the shelling sequence from the Tokyo event and I have to retract what I previously said. The complete sequence is in the film, it just felt really quick that I thought it was abridged. It isn't.

Thanks for the impressions. Seems like it will be a decent watch but nothing too terribly exciting, which is overall fine with me.

Well when you decide to make it into a PG13 summer blockbuster there's only so much you can respect...If this was greenlit today, would probably be aimed at R, lower budget, more faithful and they'd actually have Rila, Rinko or Tao as Major.

Anyway, saw it last night. Honestly, really pleasantly surprised by this. The visuals and the action are the main attraction, and do overall end up making up for the straightforward self discovery/revenge story. Maybe people expected more because of the original (which I haven't watched)? But thinking about it, for a big budget PG13 blockbuster this is probably the best they could've done. Scarlett is surprisingly good, she really sells you on how she's not fully human - there's an element of coldness to her that she pulls off here with Major. Pilou's warmth and coolness in his own way as Batou complements Scarlett very nicely. Binoche and Takeshi were both cool to see, Binoche especially. I wish they picked a better known actor with more gravitas for Cutter though, so much wasted potential with that character who is just cliche at this point. Michael Pitt - I wish he was in it more bot wow he made a real imoression in his scenes, which the trailers do not do justice (mainly the stunning voice, which is such an unsettling mix of Hawking and his own stylisations). Overall - it's a pretty nicely done solid action film, it's not OMG MASTERPIECE OUTSTANDING but it does what it was set out to do and is frankly a great time. Will probably see again in IMAX 3D at some point.

7/10

The final shot from the Tokyo version is the only thing not there, otherwise it's been retimed editing wise to fit the score. Which brings me on to my next point - I've seen the 15min IMAX preview twice and what really struck me was how different it was especially on a musical level. The shelling sequence score from Mansell in the preview is incredible but in the final film, seems they just got Balfe to do something a lot quieter and I'm just like..Ehh? Plus the weird shit about the title coming up twice in the credits - really awkward transition into the following scene.

Yes, you should never trust a film that feels it needs to remind you what you're watching, twice, in the opening credits. In case you missed it the first time.

Yes, I did like his voice a lot in that scene, how it would have bits that sounded half-synthesized.

I don't know, maybe the full sequence was never intended to be used in the film?

Did he have a larger role in the movie originally but had most of his scenes cut? Well I'm pretty sure Saito
never showed up until he was instructed to shoot down a chopper in the final act. It's possible he was just there in some Section 9 scenes though I don't recall. Certainly never mentioned by name until that point.

I just have a feeling that between the music changes, characters focused on in the trailer hardly being in the movie, blood edited out, and a running time of only 107 minutes, that Paramount hacked this thing to fucking pieces. I know the anime is only 82 minutes but I guarantee that this film was originally much longer and more character focused.

I'm actually waiting for Masamune Shirow to comment that will make all of us ashamed of our words and deeds.

Seriously though, it's whitewashing and sadly, the creator would probably be alright with the changes. :/

I havent seen it, but from the summary like I mentioned in an earlier post this wouldnt be out of place (all of it!) if it was implemented in the manga/anime.

Unfortunately Hollywood gotta Hollywood. I doubt the movie wouldnt have gotten an OK if it didnt star a white A-list Actress in the role.

It happened in one of the threads about the controversy surrounding it, I remember one poster made a blanket statement that only idiots think it still looked good or something to that effect. There were also a lot of extremely obvious implications being made towards people who debated that Johanssons casting wasn't white washing (reasons related to the director of the original film's comments) across certain threads. Not outright "you're racist" but close to it. Not saying it was wide spread but there's been heated negativity on both sides.

A lot seemed to be last minute changes too, I mean when was the IMAX preview done, late Feb? And then like 3 weeks before release they get Balfe to redo some of Mansell's score. Anyway as for runtime, it was honestly fine, very well paced.

Was reading back through the artbook and wondering how much has changed....For instance Cutter was supposed to be head of S6 but here he is the Hanka CEO. Also Tricky's character was cut as well.

Yes, I remember ONE poster calling people idiots for thinking the film looked good and he was promptly called out on it. I've been debating that Ghost in the Shell is not whitewashing in those threads and don't recall "obvious implications" of being called racist in what you ackowledge wasn't widespread anyway.

With any other movie that would be enough but not this. Being just decent would be worse than if it was an absolute abomination imo.
It is for me (and probably anyone who don't know about or care about the manga/anime). All I want from this is cool cyberpunk visuals and good action.

Which is why I was curious (never read or watched the source material)

Trust me, I know the frustration. World War Z was one of the worst adaptations I've ever seen, but it was a pretty decent zombie movie when divorced from the baggage of being WWZ in name only

Boy, that spoiler sure makes me wish I could have been there in the board room when the execs allowed it to go through.

"What's the worst that could happen?"

Considering Shirows output over the last 15 years*, if anyoene should be ashamed of words and deeds it's him.

*basically just porn with terrible 3d graphics

This is stupid. Do you know how many americans just dont give a fuck about anime. All of them.

Bringing some more people into this pretty interesting world is a fucking boon. If it makes them seek out the source material, great, if not meh, more cyberpunk is better then none. I hope this movie does gangbusters.

lol yeah. I've seen a few. For the articles.

ANYWAY would love to hear his thoughts about it someday. I'm ok with the ending if done respectfully but well, not really having my hopes up. Settling for a nice lookin' sci fi movie.

It delivers that. I really enjoyed it. It's not heavy on the action, but I thought the action was very good.

Yes, there are obviously changes from the source material, and the deeper philosophical stuff has been dumbed down for the movie via the plot changes... but let's be honest, a lot of the philosophical stuff in the original was introduced in an incredibly stilted way. There's still a fairly consistent reverence in the movie towards the original though, and I liked that.

FWIW, I saw it with one other guy who was a big fan of the original, and two guys who'd never seen the original. Myself and the other guy who'd seen the original gave it 8/10, and the guys who hadn't seen the original gave it a 7 and an 8 between them. If you're someone who worships the source material you won't enjoy it, in the same way that some A Song of Ice and Fire fans can't enjoy A Game of Thrones, or some LOTR fans lost their shit at Arwen's bigger role in the films. But I think pragmatic fans of the original like myself will enjoy this movie for what it is :)
