Giant Bomb #24 | In the beginning...

Honestly I'm thinking Jeff is probably my favorite? He's the most hilarious and the glue. Ryan is hilarious in old GB videos and I feel honored to see why people loved him so much posthumously. It's sad but it makes me happy at the same time that due to all of the archives and stuff I can watch the same stuff that made everyone else love him.

All I have to do now is convince Jeff that Shenmue II is the best game of all time.

At one point I belabored the idea of watching old content. "What's the point? It's an old game." But not I've been going through the site the past few weeks. just watching old stuff because I now value their perspective on games and they're also hilarious. I dunno. I'm not used to going to any game site period besides neogaf. I stopped taking game reviews and the game media seriously about 10 years ago, besides anything 1up. Once that site died, I honestly didn't bother looking at reviews for the most part. Why check out what the gaming media thinks when all you can do is go to youtube and watch a let's play (HOPEFULLY WITH NO COMMENTARY) for a few hours and decide whether or not it's worth purchasing?

So this is all new to me. It feels weird to me going to four game websites (Waypoint, Kotaku, Giant Bomb, US Gamer). It's not something I would have done years ago.

Out of everything you've seen, what would you say is your single favourite piece of content so far?

How did you come to find Giant Bomb? It's always nice to see new blood. :)

How are you attacking the dearth of content Cindi? I subbed just recently and decided to go through one set of content at a time. I'm currently working through demo derbies which have been quite good. I've yet to dive deep into the archives tho outside of some of the really old mailbags.

I wish someone would send me a box of twinkies. Or better yet chocodiles.

I can't wait for Waypoint to really get their feet under them and get around to their regular day-to-day operations. As it is, I can't listen to the podcast. Too much pimping their hashtag and naval-gazing about their "deeply human" brand identity and "nailing their socials."

I am currently listening to their first episode. So this does not stop?

I haven't listened to all of them, but in the ones I have (four maybe?) there is good discussion buried in "we're soo busy" and non-editorial folks guesting for no good reason to talk about building their brand.

Haven't listened to the newest episode yet, but I thought it was fine!? Of course they're talking about the site launch, though.

Also, they should really use my podcast name.

Um. I go through GB Best of. It's a great resource. I watch that and then watch the content featured in the video. So when I was laughing at that Harry Potter game (not Deathly Hollows) during the Best Of, I checked out the QL. I listen to Beastcast and Bombcast and I'm not sure if I should listen to 8-4 or the other stuff. In other to not be overwhelmed, I try to watch as much current stuff on the site main page as it is now, and try to fit in stuff from Best Of's that really really connect with me. Best Of is also great so if you watch the latest video you get samples of the what's currently on the main page, which makes going through the content that's more essential easier to do.

There's also guides on the internet with lots of lists. So people have been suggesting stuff like Persona 4 ER or Deadly Premonition or all this premium stuff. I decided to start with DP ER and I really liked watching Shenmue ER an hour a day. It's not time consuming or anything, so I do that DP ER. The Persona 4 ER is going to take me a long time to say the least.

Um...is Giant Bomb not a popular game site? Because their highest viewed video on their youtube is...just 1.5 million views and it's a Skyrim Daedric quest video.

youtube videos are always low. People watch them on the site instead.

I use youtube though because their player is not very good.

This is also where I am with Waypoint, I thought it was just me so I kept it to myself. It's even worse if you also follow them on Twitter and all you get is in-jokes and slack chat/messaging app of choice screenshots. Do these kids not have a watercooler?

No. Their office has potted plants.

I muted them all weeks ago. Occasionally I'll check their twitter and always come away leaving them muted. I'm confident they'll get there, but I just can't stand this stage of new sites nor the sort of corporate flag-waving they're into at the moment.
Yes, I need more of this.

Same. What an awesome feature. Get Dave back in the studio!

Tbf to Austin etc it's clear they are going for a totally different vibe with Waypoint than the likes of Giant Bomb so I'm not surprised it's a bit jarring for me. I hope it all works out for him.

I like how the Titanfall Trailer asks me to "become one official Titanfall lauch trailer"
That's a novel marketing idea.

Edit: Dark Souls 3's DLC is another one of those "you need to go to this place before you can play it"?
Well, guess no more Dark Souls 3 for me.

so what did Peter Moore do?

A DLC pack in for BF1. Pay 1$ and he'll give you a good luck gesture when the game starts.
Why the love for Mario maker at gb? Do I need to watch the ql or something?

Watch this. Apart from the other things they did when it comes to Mario games.

Dan is what really makes this video but it also wouldn't have happened without Jeff.

This is heartwarming to read through. Always interesting to see new thoughts on the duders. Maybe now you'll understand why we find it funny when all we see is the word "Jaded".

You're right. I really think they'll have something unique and interesting at the end of this, but for now I just can't stand the marketing lingo and corporate hurrahs that they're all about.

Also I just realized I wrote "naval gazing" earlier which would mean, in fact, looking at boats.

One off-putting thing is how they like to retweet other Vice brands. I would follow those if I cared about that stuff...

Oh and did you know Vice Health is called "Tonic"? Names ain't easy.

Seeing this talk of the Giant Bomb best of videos made me want to go back and watch them and I just now noticed that on their official YouTube site they have the playlist of them all

But for some weird reason they're missing number 11 and 12...

DAVE!!!!

Fall 2011 was peak GB for me. You had random pc game, load my last save, the skyrim pre-marathon as well as the marathon itself .

I was living abroad with a 2gb monthly internet data cap for most of 2011, Random PC Game is the greatest but I really should catch up on some of the other stuff from that era that I missed.

The closest since then was actually last year with the GBeast streams. Contradiction, lis, until dawn, vinnyvania, kerbal. God I miss Austin working there.

That was a pretty good time... I think they were trying a bunch of different stuff and were putting out a lot of fun videos because (If I'm remembering correctly) that was right before they were getting bought out by CBS. I remember going back and watching one of those super long SNES streams and at some point someone (Will Smith maybe) starts talking about how they're going to make way more videos, they were emailing subscribers about content they wanted to see more of, etc...

Seems like it was probably a crazy time behind the scenes.

Austin gelled into the group perfectly. It shows that while Jeff will take a long time to find a new person, he knows what he's doing. I'm not worried at all about the new hire for SF.

I wasn't too sure about Dan in the East, but Shenmue endurance run shows that they have potential.

I'll still miss Austin, but that's life.

I bet 2017 will be a good year.
