Giant Bomb #24 | In the beginning...

Anyone familiar with Peanuts comics?

I want to buy the collections for my SO for Christmas.

But I'm not sure which to get him because there are so damn many. Jesus Christ, Schulz slow down.

I'm a relative newbie too; first stuff I actively paid any attention to on the site was the 2015 GOTY stuff this January, because someone (I want to say it was that Green Hotman Cold character) had been banging on about it on Twitter, and I'd just started doing a podcast-friendly commute and wanted some decent stuff to listen to. From there started watching (a selection of) the regular videos, and subscribed a few months back.

I have very little experience of the site from before the past year, apart from the odd podcast and occasional Best of Giant Bomb episode. When I've got a little more time on my hands, I might start doing some deeper dives; I really want to watch some good Ryan videos in particular.

Cindi I want mention how I appreciate what you've brought to the thread. A Giant Bomb "newcomer" bringing up all this old stuff for us to reminisce and discuss has been really fun. Good vibes in here lately.

Don't worry, it's only a matter of time before we go back to curmudgeonly comparing current GB with the glory days!

I would say just buy all of them, because having any volume gaps in a comic collection is bad.

I had a thrift store copy of It's for You, Snoopy as a kid and the inside cover had a poem hand-written by the previous owner that basically said God will send me to Hell if I stole the book

Yeah, media outlets really have no choice but to 'suck it up'? Like they can say 'Don't preorder' as much as they want, but really Bethesda is going to keep getting youtubers to peddle their bullshit, and they'll have terms like "Don't show anything negative". Even if there's a disclaimer that a youtuber is being paid by Bethesda, there really are no laws against showing only the positives of something whilst hiding the bad shit, is there.

Oh and since we were talking about the beginnings of GB earlier:
What you might not know if you came on later is just how amazing their engineering team was. Dave Snider and his crew were doing ridiculous things for how small of a site it was. Maybe they just lacked focus, but they were building everything. Forums, a wiki, own video player(?), livestreaming/chat, lists, their own CMS and editing backend, achievements, user reviews, blogs, a follow system and probably more I'm forgetting right now.

I think that was one of the things that drew people to them, it felt like they were building something big. It was a very fascinating time following that process as a fan.

Yeah. Youtubers (in general; not all of them) seem to approach game coverage in a very different way than "old" media. While the people at traditional sites think of themselves as journalists and try to hold themselves to appropriately high standards- even avoiding the appearance of quid pro quo- youtubers think of themselves primarily as entertainers, and as such, see nothing wrong with glossing over the negative bits of a game if it means they can deliver content early (lots of exceptions on both sides, of course). Of course publishers would prefer that coverage of their games be delivered primarily by the second group.

Good switch discussion on the cast?

Yeah, they dive straight in and spend a good bit of time on it.

I saw a lot of Giant Bomb over the years thanks to AusGAF having a lot of GB fans.

Finally started listening to the podcast in late 2013 and then subbed in 2014.

It's snowballed from there and now my wife and I watch hours of GB every week.

This bullshit plus the personal responsibility-ignoring meltdowns over disappointing releases by game players lately is going to end up going very, very badly in the near future. Watch.

All while showing up to crash Drew's plane, dive into some EuroJank, and showcase soup wallets.

Dave is hardcore. Very much so!

My posting has been super rare since getting a new job, but damn I'm happy about this. Went from "won't afford VR for like a year" to "yeah I could easily get one, but I'd rather spend that money on Gundam."

Definitely miss being able to watch stuff live though.

I could really go for a Jefflr about this Bethesda stuff right about now.
If he streams tonight, it could be a good one.

I do think it's a little disappointing that they went off over Bethesda but zipped up when it came to CS:GO being turned into a gambling racket aimed at children and Palmer Luckey funding a group tied to white supremacists.

Jeff nailed Luckey on the Bombcast, what are you talking about?
