Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

Dan is the conservative choice. He's a sure bet, basically. Considering the bumpy road that Patrick (who was like barely different from the rest of the guys in the grand scheme of things) had in getting accepted by the community, I cannot blame them at all for picking Dan up. Large parts of the GB community basically just want three Jeffs and three Vinnys running the site. That's hard to please.

With that said, I do hope that in the future they branch out some more (maybe when GBeast gets clearance for hires in 2026). Dan is the "most qualified" for what Giant Bomb has always been up to this point. But GB can also be a lot more, and I think more diverse hires would allow the crew to expand our ideas of what the site can be. The magic isn't gonna die if they hire someone who can't make wrestling jokes.

But also, again, I'm excited about Dan and I thoroughly welcome him to the raging shit-hurricane that is Giant Bomb.

I agree, but I don't think its because of Patrick's bumpy road when he was first hired. I feel that Dan was hired because Giant Bomb and the GB community have had a hell of a crazy time ever since the site joined CBSi and some stability would be good for the site and the community as a whole after Ryan passing, Patrick & Vinny leaving etc. Plus Dan is awesome.

Is this a joke?

So Jason is the new video producer, working with Drew.

Dan is the new editor and likes wrestling.

Gonna have to do my best to separate their voices.

There are less qualified women than men because far more men than women are interested in being part of the gaming industry. Other industries, .e.g accountants/auditors, have a lot more more females than males. And that's OK, too.

No, if an industry that caters to all kinds of audiences is geared in such a way that entire major demographics are put off or discouraged from even applying to jobs, then that's not OK in the least.

I'd assume that Jason would not be on the podcast regularly. However, I haven't fully listened to the new one, so maybe they say otherwise.

Who says they are put off or discouraged?

Zoe Quinn was literally talking the other day on Twitter about how she's been borderline sexual harassed (or had her sexuality and gender brought up repeatedly for no reason) at multiple studio interviews, and I've seen sentiment from multiple women that people like her and Phil Kollar follow mentioning that they don't even bother applying to a lot of jobs anymore because of it.

Seriously, did you miss the whole #1ReasonWhy movement?

That's depressing.

Huh, weird. Whenever I heard of kansas I always got the impression that it was a southern state.

I'm pretty sure the South is historically seen as those states that permitted slavery. Kansas was inducted as a slavery-free state (although that almost wasn't the case).

Grrrrreat work, games industry.

Nope. You are wrong. Kansas is not a part of the South. Not even by the Census' broad ass "regions" measures.

I missed the part where it was proved that institutionalized sexual harassment is the main reason videogame makers and videogame media are staffed mainly by males.

The alternative is that there's something innate to women that turns them off to the field. Is that an acceptable answer to you?

Of course it's acceptable to me that not every job attracts 50% male applicants and 50% female applicants. Otherwise I'd be upset about nurses, legal secretaries, accountants, etc. etc.

I laugh at the idea that this industry even gets close to 70:30.

Well said, duder.

I understand that definition, it's just that I've heard americans mention kansas enough when they talk about wierd southern stuff.

Glad to be corrected though.

Her twitter is so salty

I sually enjoy reading her tweets, like the ones about Robin Thicke earlier today.

I don't really understand where she is coming from with the tweets befouling the GB community though...surely she still can't be salty about the time she made an arse out of herself during an E3?

Wheres Jason from ? Minneapolis ?

Are you saying you do not find SS clothing sexy ?

Making my way through UPF and Next Car Game seems really fun. I guess it's unlikely but a console version would be amazing.

I think i heard Bugbear say if Next Car game gets enough support console versions would be supported.

no doubt, but then again greg miller made an drunken ass out of himself and got away with it so maybe there is some sexism going on

maybe it was because vinny gave him a goofy voice

i dunno

And getting back to the Giant Bomb hire, diversity doesn't just come from your race or gender. I can think of one white American male games journalist in particular who would have been great for bringing a different perspective at Giant Bomb, but he just wouldn't have fit in like Dan will.
Ray Barnholt.

I don't understand how the hiring of two people for GB became such a controversy. We have no right to assume anything about the hiring process and I'm disappointed that what should be good news is being dragged through the mud.

Jeff hired the two people that best lived up to the job description. Period. They could have been zebras. They could have been Latin American. They could have been martians from a distant galaxy. They weren't. They were two dudes who happened to be white.

I'm not gonna post the tweets, but this thread is gonna blow up real soon...

She's still feeling the hurt of many e3s ago, with a whole community hating on her. But that post about Giant Bomb not being a good place for women to work, kinda feels like she's speaking badly about Jeff and co, since that's who any potential worker will mainly be talking to :-(

Oh I think she deleted it.

I really do like your avatar and think Psych is a great show. That being said, your last paragraph is pretty bad.

I wouldn't be surprised tbh, at least regarding audience (i.e. twitter, stream monsters, other misc. reactors who are vocal about whatever they feel etc) reactions
