Giant Bomb E3 2012

Pachter's job isn't to sit there and predict exact product announcements in the industry. This is what the army of high schoolers and unemployed people imagine he does which is why the threads of "WTF eat shit Pachter u were wrong" is always hilarious. He's a funny and eloquent guy from what I've seen of him.

This is always true, even if he's saying things I disagree with I find it super hard to dislike him for it because he always seem honest and pretty much a stand-up guy. Everything seems to be on the surface with him. Dunno why people constantly shit on him. I have more dislike for his profession- analyst is a pretty dumb job, IMO.

Of course it isn't and I kind of like him. But ... It's hard not to laugh at him when he says stuff like :

“I have long been baffled as to why RTS games don’t work on consoles. I think it is partly because of the nature of the gameplay, it’s single-player and it’s turn-based."

Somebody's gotta anal

That looked real pretty, and it was impressive the first time i pushed up on the stick through a cool set piece like that, but it feels like I'm starting to get diminishing returns at this point. I'm doing the exact same thing in all these games, it's just the scenery that changes.
Pretty much my reaction. The first part of that trailer just gave me Uncharted deja vu, it's not mind-blowing at all because there's is practically no interaction going on when you strip it down.

What is his job then? I'm not being sarcastic either; who is paying Pachter and for what?

There is a pretty big group on GAF who like all the business analyst bullshit in gaming, and wish they had Pachter's job. Unfortunately while they sit on their armchairs they have no clue what an analyst actually does so when Pachter makes predictions on GT.tv that are pretty random and out there they call him out and think they could do a better job than him despite the fact it isn't his actual job.

Whats up with the justin tv archive, part 1 cuts out during ubisoft discussion and then part 2 starts some time later with pachter gone and jeff back? I wanted to here them discuss Watch_Dogs

Seems like there is a chunk of time missing between the first and second day0 video on justin.tv. Do you guys know if that's available anywhere?

edit: Heh, guess angrymoth and I both finished watching the archive video at the same time.

Agreed. See, I'm not entirely sure what he's supposed to be doing, whether he's supposed to be saying what they will be doing if they're "smart" or what they seem likely to do or what, but fuck if I'm gonna pretend to have a clue. Obviously, someone out there benefits from his musings, but I'll be damned if it's anyone on here who's ever bitched about him.

edit: Listening to him now, he's spitting hot fire about Nintendo. Looking at the paper, it's not surprising. That said, I don't believe him about their war chest being empty now. Fuck that, they made too much money.

I think pachter just analyses and manage stocks at Wedbush? Crazy videogames predictions are obviously not his main job.

It's supposed to be like that.

They cut out during that discussion and probably didn't know until people in the chat went, "OH NO". Then they came back with Pachter and a few others gone.

That's just how it was.

He ended up talking about you in terms of a GAF collective if it makes you feel better. :P

We're all apparently meanies!

I've just recently started following Giant Bomb, but what do they think of GAF in general?

The thing that annoys people most about Pachter - the sometimes seemingly weird statements made about the future of gaming - is not really his fault.

Pretty much all those statements can be connected back to a question he was asked by a journalist, and he just offers his opinion on the matter, then that answer gets typed up by the journalists.

The problem is that most journalists don't usually reveal their question when they write their news piece, instead choosing to say"Industry analyst recently commented to us that he believes Wii U will sell half the number of Wii's because ______," making it seem like he emailed them to declare this amazing information.

Instead of hating on Pachter for his statements, we could instead be questioning some journalists for their, at times, idiotic questions.

Oh man, he's talking about GAF as a collective. That's a paddlin'.

SmartGlass SEEMS important, but two things.

1) Microsoft ain't pulling this off. Someone else will, but Microsoft? No. Heeeeeell no.
2) They were super unconvincing. This should have been the subject of a separate conference away from sodding E3. Like, why wasn't this back at CES? But slap bang in the middle of E3? Fucking weird, man. Microsoft don't believe in this.

They think it is a popular internet message board... :3

I thought we were a bit more important than that :/

They're probably gonna pull it off, but it won't be as outstanding as they claim it to be.

They'll reference it from time to time. Last time I think was them talking about the bungie contract and jeff was like "you could go and make a list of all the things in there, which neogaf was happy to do". I found It funny since he was saying they have no life.

No, that was Elder Scrolls Online. There was a list of all details about it here.

Shit, I have no life for knowing this, do I? Self-fulfilling prophecies :U

I like Pacther, if not only for the fact that it's pretty weird how he's become this industry personality. He has certainly embraced all of that. Also he seems like a cool dude. I don't really care if he says silly things every now and then when asked for his opinion. I don't consider him an authority with any real power over anything or whatever, so what does it really matter if his hit percentage is a bit below 100? I'm not offended by that you know. Don't really know why anyone would be. I enjoy the "grrr Pachter! *waves fist*" stuff though. It's fun that he's seen as a villain.

He does occasionally have some insight and offers a different perspective to things. So appreciate that too.

Speaking of things, here's the best thing I saw yesterday.

Pachter needs to stop torturing himself by reading this place. His bitterness and self-depreciation aside, he the most interesting things to say in the entire podcast to be honest. You can tell everyone else in the room felt the same. :P

Good stuff for day 1.

That's kinda what I mean, someone else will come and do it bigger and better incredibly soon after, if not sooner. Probably Apple.
And--anecdotally, I might add--it seems to me that more people are just more familiar with Apple's products because they're easier to use due to their UI, and they're, well, popular (ex: my mom wants an iPad because my aunt has one).

Most of the people I know who work with animation and multimedia a lot use Apple products extensively because the software seems easy to manipulate (well, they tell me that; I wouldn't know), and most of the students in my tech classes have iOS devices or iPhones because they generally get them when their parents go on phone plans or something (or peer pressure).

I simply see Apple being more successful with this sort of thing because of their market presence, that's all.

My friends and I also had a laugh during the Internet Explorer segment of the MS conference. Do a lot of people still use IE?

I didn't have a problem with Pachter's crazy predictions because everyone has those, though I do wish that people would challenge him more on-screen. I feel like they put him on a pedestal a bit as if he's got a privileged point of view.

But when he starts getting a whole lot of basic fiscal stuff wrong like he did with Nintendo (lost all their money they made on the Wii with Wii U R&D, had an annual loss in 2002/2003, will never make money again until they change their business model) it's annoying. Unless he was just trolling with that stuff, which is also possible.

And the problem is that if he ever does get stuff like that wrong it's the least likely stuff anyone will ever challenge him on on a podcast or whatever because everyone assumes he's got all his facts straight because of his job.

To be honest analysts in all fields and industries are generally full of shit. Saw a recent study of the calls by various market analysts last year and found their overall success rate was under 50%.

You could have flipped a coin and done better.

SpeedPage! :lol :lol :lol

Seeing Black Dragon sitting with the 4 Giant Bomb duders is like looking into a parallel universe where everything awesome is slightly more awesome.

Another Pachter fan here -- he seems like a down to earth guy who genuinely cares about what he does, and even if he's not right all the time, he usually has legitimate support for his arguments and isn't just spouting fanboy nonsense.

Yeah, I was pretty surprised by the Nintendo comments -- how off-base was he? It sounded off from what I know about Nintendo financials, though I'm hesitant to dismiss it outright since knowing that stuff is (from what I understand) a big part of his job.

I think more often he's either pushing an agenda (Wii HD) or is talking about things he has no knowledge of or interest in (RTS on consoles.)

Nintendo had a couple of quarters of losses during the GC era (might have just been one quarter) but they haven't had an annual loss since they went public in 1981. Until last fiscal year, obviously.

And that loss was driven by them having to sell the 3DS below cost (as well as foreign exchange losses), not because of WiiU R&D. It doesn't even cancel out a single year of profit they made during this generation, nevermind the whole generation, and they expect a return to profit this fiscal year as the manufacturing costs of the 3DS go down. They also have a very good revenue/employee ratio so I'm not sure where he got the "Nintendo is too big" thing.

Yea Nintendo losing all they gained with the Wii seems rather crazy. I don't have any reason to think he would be lying...but that is insane.

Pachter might actually like playing games, but he always comes off as less informed than mainstream non-gaming journalist. I know I'm talking about him right now so this is hypocritical but it's weird that he gets so much attention.

EDIT: Wow he's really hurt over that thread huh.

since this has basically become a pachter thread, he just gave another shoutout to GAF on the Gametrailers/Spike stream.

He is really hurt by you guys
