Giant Bomb @ E3 2016 | WEED3

That Palmer Luckey stuff was pretty bad. Not the interview segment itself, but his responses. Fleeing directly to "IMAGINE A WORLD" when confronted with relatively gentle questions about the issues surrounding VR was a very, very bad look. Particularly with all of this DRM fuckery.

He just showed me that VR isn't for me when he told that is goal is to replicate human interaction.

That's exactly what I don't want out of it. I like the real thing better.

Yeah the PR bullsh*t was a bit too much. I would be really nice to see a more genuine Palmer on there.

lol I just saw that Konami burn too.

They are talking Scalebound on the GS stream with Kamiya. I know it didn't look great in the conference, but man I still feel there is potential there with the amount of time left.

I don't understand people who go to E3 to waste a whole day waiting in line for a 10min demo fo a game. Especially a game which we've already seen 5+ hours of gameplay

For me Occulus went from frontrunners/innovators to dead last real quick over the last couple of months.

It's a giant missmanaged mess. They have terrible distribution pipeline, terrible propriatery software with DRM and locks out a ton of stuff. The hardware is good but not necessarly the best, nothing making them stand out over the other two anyway... Especially right now without their controllers.

They literally have nothing in their favor right now if you compare them to the Vive.

They have brand awareness. That can evaporate quickly but it is valuable

Same. The gamescom singleplayer footage looked interesting but ran like garbage, the MS footage was boring, but ran better. Hopefully next time they show off some polished singleplayer.

That Job simulator from Vive was hands down the most interesting VR demo/game I have seen. It's one of the only things that really made me want a headset

I think the Oculus headset is more comfortable and lighter than the Vive, also the motion controls look better but I haven't tried them.

I dunno, I went with Oculus because I thought the motion controllers looked less clunky and I would have less trouble using SteamVR stuff with Oculus than vice versa. It's been okay.

When John Drake talked about the Sony conference, Alex could not wait to remind him of the official Giant Bomb position. He's really proud of their groupthink.

We get it. You're upset that GB didn't slobber over the Sony press conference enough for your liking.

I thought that too, but it's a really shallow experience in the end. I haven't even tried half of the jobs in it before I got bored. My wife likes it though.

I really enjoy Holopoint, Audioshield, Hover Junkers and The Lab. House of The Dying Sun and Elite are great as well and Theblu makes me wish I smoked weed still, as sitting on the floor after a few bongs in that experience would be great.

If I can get the real thing what does VR offer me?

"Oh, here's a way of socializing that's close that emulates physical presence but it's not where near as good"

It's not for me.

Palmer isn't the official spokesperson for all of VR and what the experience should be for you. VR has many applications, most of which right now are "how far can we immerse you into a game", which I think is what makes it exciting for a lot of us.

Did you actually interpret that to literally mean its singular goal is that? When people create video games to replicate social interaction, do you question your connection to video games as an entire medium too? Have you warded off cellphones because you recognize your ability to talk with other people in person? What about this forum? Why are you on GAF if you're just typing text into posts?

That's a shame. When Jeff mentioned the working area scaling to the room size I was really impressed. It looked like it had the kind of funny tone I like too. I'd still like to check it out. Not much else I saw really grabbed me and I have no interest in playing non-vr games in VR.

It is his goal, he was pretty obvious about that.

And those experiences don't mimick physical interactions and don't try to replace that. They are means of communication, sure but the barrier is there for me.

I feel like trying to replicate face to face interaction but in a virtual setting to be something I just can't relate to or do I want to relate.

If you want or like that then cool. I'm talking from my personal point of view so no need to get all rilled up.

And I've maintained tha VR isn't about games so I'm not even talking about that. Altought in that regard is pretty simple as I haven't seen a VR game that interests me.

EDIT: also, to add to your question, yes I question when video games try and replicate interaction. I tried to play Persona once and the whole "making friends" and the fake social aspect of it really turned me off of the whole thing.

Do I have to be a premium member to watch their streams? When does their streams for E3 start? I have been watching mostly EZA stuff, but I love Giant Bomb too and want to make sure I see both perspectives.

Thanks =)

For some reason you're acting like that is only thing VR can do.

Guys... My GTX 1080 just shipped so with a bit of luck I'll have it on Friday.... I'll finally be able to play Doom yayyyy

Congrats on the hardware!

You don't need to be a subscriber for their E3 videos. You can watch them on Twitch or YouTube in addition to the Giant Bomb website. They'll be live tonight at 5 pm Pacific/8 pm Eastern.

It is a goal, it's purely your reading that it is the only goal.

I was giving you the benefit of the doubt, but how is it you reconcile that anything I've listed can have multiple use cases, yet somehow you've so quickly bought into the idea that this medium can only possibly have a single one? You realize the extent of VR technology in that it's literally just a hybrid display/input device, right? Where are you drawing the line between misreading a single person's statements as definitive and all encompassing while continuing to engage in any other medium that could theoretically have that same singular goal but you choose to arbitrary not interpret that to be the case then?
