Giant Bomb GOTY 2014 - Destiny Has Brought Us Here

Seems like an exaggeration. Even though it's divisive, and yes it didn't live up to the hype, at least two members of the bomb crew thought it was a top 10 game.

Well Jeff's support for it did remind me of how Ryan backed Skyrim. It's actually worse now that Jeff is back to ranting about how bad Destiny is in podcasts and quick looks. Or maybe Warframe is just a GOTY candidate.

Jazzpunk comparison seems a bit wrong to me. The worst vibe I got from some of the crew was that they were indifferent to it with the others liking it. This is far different to the outright dislike that the majority of the crew has towards Destiny. Also Jeff dislikes Destiny too, he even said he was tempted to put the game in the top 10 to prove the year was bad.

No one but Brad thought it was a top 10 game. Jeff and Vinny knew he would get really heated if they didn't throw him a bone, so they pussied out and did it. Everyone else hated or disliked it.

The problem was that lots of people were indifferent to lots of things. It's probably why you shouldn't get so hung up on the 1-10. You have games making that list that not everyone (the majority in some cases) didn't even play. It's not an exact science they are using to come up with the list here.

Then just like Jeff said, if they felt that strongly about it they should have said so. But they didn't, probably because its not that serious. Their goal though isn't to come up with a perfect list, as that would be impossible. Right from the start you have a group of people who all didn't even play all of the games being discussed. People seem to be taking the top 10 list way more seriously than the people who put it together. It's not that serious.

Yea and honestly...Destiny is way better than Jazzpunk. Jazzpunk should have been in that short time category.

The weirdest part of the podcasts to me was Alex starting off saying he really liked Mario Kart 8, only to spend the rest of the show trying to throw it under a bus for any reason he could. There were a couple of times when people would be talking about two entirely different games, and he'd chip in with "Just so you know, I won't argue for Mario Kart". Was very strange.

A lot of them were throwing games they liked under the bus, that's kinda what you have to choose and discuss a couple of games out of dozens making the top list. Not everything you liked was gonna make it, so you have to throw games under the bus to get games you thought were better on there, even if you did like that other game.

I like Alex, but a strong will and a willingness to face down opposition is not something I'd attribute to him.

If Destiny was the 10th best game of the year because its gets good after 15 hours, why didn't FF XII not win a GOTY award by GB?

The more I think about it, the more weird it is that Wolfenstein didn't make this list. For several weeks there with how everyone talked about I expected it to be a GOTY contender. They all seemed to love it. Then the debates came around and everyone except Drew was all of a sudden meh on it. I think they could have benefited from playing some Wolf again before the recordings.

I've come to accept that Destiny is the Syndicate of this year's list. At the bottom to appease the one person who liked the game this year.

Brad has no silver tongue, he just gets emotional and angry about his addictions. Between this and "DOTA 2 is so innovative", I don't see how he has a place in these debates anymore. Jeff's taste is insane but at least he can reasonably discuss things most of the time, though no one having the balls to challenge him on anything is a problem. If Jeff and Brad agree on something it doesn't matter what anyone else on the team thinks.

Yup. That's why I was saying their goty process is broken.

Brad's arguments for Destiny were basically: "Destiny is like drugs and I like these drugs look I've taken these drugs so many times it's Top 10 and I'm telling you these drugs get really interesting after you've taken them for 50h". But in the end it's about what 10 games one should've played in 2014 and Destiny is one of those games. (I sold it after ~50h Beta included.)

Mario Kart should be higher and not having Donkey Kong on there is a crime against humanity. But it's just a stupid list so who cares. We have our own stupid list over here anyway.

Edit-I'm tired of going in circles, but if it was meant to be a standalone game, Kojima would've said as much. But it's meant to be a prologue to TPP, as stated by Kojima. And seeing how MGSV as a whole takes place after Peace Walker, it's natural to assume that the story is meant to be a continuation of it, not a stand alone game.
Who cares what his intent was? It was presented and sold as a packaged, single game.

Might as well turn around and say, "Destiny is the first game in a multi-game franchise, so ignore the fact that it has about half the content you would expect in a AAA game."

Eh, for a podcast that went over 4 hours, I can't really blame any of them for losing some steam towards the end in terms of desire to argue. On that note, I was surprised they decided to cram in 4 awards on Day 5, when the Day 4 podcast was only 1:30 and I believe another day's podcast was also on the shorter side. Perhaps they had other time commitments on the other days, but with how exhausting these GOTY deliberations are as it is, kind of surprising to me they didn't just want to make that the sole focus of the last day (or at the very least, combine it with just one other category, like the worst game).

lol, I'm actually pretty sure they recorded them all in one go / one day.

Brad likes a game and it gets in the top ten games of the year because he felt strongly about it.

Why are people raising eyebrows? Brad knows it's not a perfect game, hell, he probably knows it's not a "good" game, but he loved playing it, and that's all that matters. I've loved some really "shitty" games in the past, and I'd fight for them 'till the end.

The second best game of the year wasn't even played by half the staff, for God's sake. CoD at number four, when only Jeff really liked it and Brad and a few others thought it was okay? It's a GOTY list with a ton of different opinions and personalities. That's how these things go.

No issues, no qualms, fight your fights, Brad.

This is true, but Wolfenstein being cut just for Destiny is somewhat insane--Wolfenstein is soooo much better than Destiny, and definitely better than even CoD:AW, although some would argue against that.

Wolfenstein didn't get cut for Destiny. There would have been room for Wolfenstein had people not railroaded stuff like Mario Kart, Jazzpunk, and CoD:AW onto the list.

Nobody felt strongly enough about Wolfenstein to stand up for it, for whatever reason. By the time Destiny came up most people had already played their "I'm not going to rest until this game makes the list" trump card in favor of a different title.

The Destiny thing is what it is, I'm over it. I personally have like 50 hours in the game, so while I don't personally think it's one of the best, I can't argue Brad's stance that it's just fun.

I haven't played Jazzpunk, but from what I've seen of it, if that can hang on the Top 10, then so can Destiny.

I thought enough time was spent debating Destiny's merits and problems on the podcast but wow gaf, you're still going in this thread.

The funny part is all the GB crew are probably watching this happen and shaking their head. It's a little sad that we care more than they do about a silly list lol.

I think Jeff did a disservice to his point by saying that the problem with Destiny is that there wasn't more of it. If there was any more of that menial grinding mess of a game I would have never finished it.

Here's a question for you all: where, in all of their GOTY podcasts or personal top 10 lists, was Lords of the Fallen? That game might just be the most overlooked game of last year's GOTY debates! I thought Vinny and Brad liked it quite a bit, no?

To be clear, I haven't played it myself but I did find its absence quite surprising after watching them being quite positive about it during podcasts and the Quick Look. Their only real "complaint" was its similarity to Dark Souls if I remember correctly.

On that note, are there any other big releases that none of them brought up despite them not disliking it? Or other games like Wolfenstein they should have fought harder for to get on the top 10 perhaps (come on Drew, step up!)?

Overall I was very entertained by this year's deliberations, as always in fact. The fact that I listened to them in an environment as far removed from video games as possible (i.e. in an old hotel in Switzerland where snow, board games and other people were my entertainment) helped as well to make them feel special. They remain a highlight for me each Christmas and I will surely miss Patrick as one of the most vocal participants.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I'm just now coming around to listening to day 5 of the deliberations and I wanted to voice my disappointment with the crew cutting Dark Souls 2 from the list of ten. Wasn't expecting it to make GOTY or whatever, but man, even though it's obviously not as good as DkS1, it's still much better than most of the other games on that list. Seems they made the mistake of comparing it to its predecessor, not the other games on that list.

Fucking Destiny, give me a break... How the hell you cut Dark Souls 2 and keep that copy/paste fest on the damn list is beyond me.

Pretty sure someone at the table did end up correcting him and making a comment about more missions just being more Deploy and Protect the Dinklage quests.

Considering the amount of fanfare that DS2 got from the GB crew, I was impressed the conversation around it even lasted as long as it did. That game had almost zero impact on them

Show us your list?

Very quickly then (I should be working). I didn't like (or have time to play enough) to come up with a full list of ten, but here's what I got:

Game of the year: Dark Souls 2

Runners-up in no particular order:

Wasteland 2
Grand Theft Auto 5 (yes, a remaster, had a surprising amount of fun with the online component. It's also the most beautiful game I've ever played.)
Kentucky Route Zero (Act 3 was released this year, does that count?)
Shadow of Mordor (the game AC wishes it could be)
Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls (still not as good as Diablo 2, but it scratches that itch)
Spintires
Insurgency (best shooter I've played since Bad Company 2 and Counter-Strike)
Nidhogg

Haha. Thanks. I assumed this thread was the active one because it was bumped up in my subscriptions folder. Teaches me for being a silly poster.
