Giant Bomb PSVR stream | It's always Summer in PlayStation VR Nation

sony probably shouldn't have used unaltered six year old tech for their new VR platform is what I'm getting from this.
Yeah, it seems really short-sighted, but I guess it helped them keep the price down. I suspect we see a controller/camera revision sooner rather than later (like Wii Motion+).

It's just really weird that they came out with a new camera, but stuck with visible light for tracking. Why not just switch over to IR, and make people buy the camera that they probably don't already own anyways?

I guess they would have to produce new move controllers as well.

I feel like these broadcasts don't give an accurate representation of what these games look like in the headset. I imagine that people who are basing a buying decision off of watching a stream like Giant Bomb's are going to be extremely surprised and disappointed at how terrible everything looks in comparison to what's being shown in the stream.

(On the other hand the stream can't give you the "presence" that the goggles can, so maybe it's a wash?)

That said, the software looks pretty good! Not sure if it's $400 good, but good enough that it might provide a decent variety of experiences that won't get old after a few days. (Also, I'd worry about what it will cost to keep your VR experience fresh. Like, if all of these "games" are $20+, things are bound to add up after a while.)

Watched a few tibits.

I don't know.

Not exactly thrilled about any of the VR things right now, but if I did jump into that hole, I don't think I would want something limited by a closed platform like Playstation.

I would want something where weirdos can make weird shit.

Or the other kind of weird shit I need to lock all my doors for.

Yes, they'd need new controllers and they'd piss off the people that bought the first camera.

AND they couldn't sell you the headset by itself because you'd need the new camera and controllers, which would be more expensive than the $500 bundle that we have now.

It just makes sense for them to go with what they had now. In the future, they can switch to something like lighthouse tracking.

Wii was IR and had occasional interference, possibly from visible light sources.

Seems like drifting with the Move controllers was part of the problem but the bigger issue is the headset tracking.

They sold A LOT of these cameras. I remember them being surprised by it. They were completely sold out for a while.

did they play rez?
Yep, first game they played.

People have different experiences. The reason threads and discussions regarding reviews or impressions go to shit so often here is because some people just need one single perspective to be definitive. Jeff's gripes with VR are completely legitimate, but it may also not represent your experience or someone else's who may have a more favorable review. Both things CAN exist. And the beauty of it being 2016 is that there is no shortage of avenues to find different opinions that can help you form yours, or can help you decide if you want to try something or not. Otherwise, what you are really looking for is just confirmation bias.
+1

That sucks. :/
I was hoping the biggest issue were library at launch, and the lower screen res.
Compared to the other VR headsets line up, this seems to have a fairly good line up, probably better than the current gen consoles line up?

Also, they said the games look fine and the lower res isn't that big of a deal, but the tracking issues are.

I'm fine with the screen, and the lineup. Actually have 4 game series reserved.

I'm just saying, I was expecting the reviewers to only complain about those two things, which weren't an issue to me.

Can someone link to where Eurogamer people were mentioning the faulty hardware problem? Also, What is to be seen in that Batman GIF that made Jeff give up? It looks like what you'd expect that kind of stuff to look like, distortion and all.

Could anyone nab a GIF of when Jeff is drinking the headlight fluid and barfing in his hat? I am struggling to find a website to create it because it's a 5-hour video.

Is this why Sony's been sort of quiet about promoting the thing for the last couple of months?

I still don't understand what specific hardware fault would cause this, though. Is it just their tracking method being a bit less robust than Oculus/Vive? The low number of tracking dots on the headset always seemed dodgy to me.

Overall after 6 hours seeing the stream I should say that their conclusions are Ok to me.

The tracking issues (I don't know if are problem of the new camera revision or what) buy must be adressed by sone asap.

And other than that the PSVR work and looks as intended.

I feel like camera and move controllers causing issues, not the actual headset.

It's been sold out everywhere for months. Why blow a ton of cash marketing something already sold out for launch?

You'll see a ramp up leading to Xmas, I would think.

The stream looked bad and mildly nauseating. The way the people who have played all things VR talked about playing them made it sound much worse.

I was more talking about the image quality. Like people look at the Drive Club VR streams and they're like "wow, I can't believe it looks that good in VR!" And I'm wondering if they really think it looks like what they're seeing on the stream, when the reality is that it looks like if you took a screen door, placed it across the screen, then wiped a fine layer of vaseline over the screen.

Do you get used to it? Sure. They same way when you go to your grandparents' house and they had a CRT television with bunny ears, and by the second day you barely noticed that I Love Lucy on day-time television was in black-and-white and grainy as hell. Like, ultimately, the content is all that really matters. Presentation is secondary.

But still, it doesn't look remotely like what these streams show.

(The responsiveness and tracking issues I'm going to let go for now. Seems like too many conflicting reports to make a judgement now.)

Gamespot guys just mentioned tracking and they haven't had any issues and its been solid. They mentioned they're aware of what GB ran into, but they're not sure what could be the cause.

Gamespot just said that the trackng is going flawless for them.
Peter Brown also said that he had to turn off lights in his office, because they would get detected as Move controllers

I wonder if Sony ships out replacements to Giant Bomb before they do a review of some of the bigger titles next week. That's if hardware is the real problem, of course.

faulty hardware is faulty hardware

You don't get a pass because you can replace/exchange it.

Of course. I never gave them a pass for that.

I already stated earlier in the thread that hopefully, this isn't a widerspread issue which we won't know until it has launched.

This was the answer to the question I posedon the live chat. They actually read the question out loud and then stated they had no problems at all.

The blonde guy wity glasses.

Edit: gonna look to the exact moment on the stream and yhen post it.
