Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

Looks like they saved all their non-PAX content for Friday.

An odd strategy, but at least we're getting more than a half hour of video content this week. It was looking pretty dire there for a while!

I think most of that stuff was embargoed, so they didn't really have a choice.

whats wrong with EX quicklooks? I like them.

I think my only fault with them is that if there is an issue or the game is just shitty, in an EX environment Ryan/Jeff/whomever, will not say so. They just go along with the sales pitch and we sort of lose out on their own personal opinions on the game.

Don't really use Quick Looks to hear the PR talking points of a game, and the staff aren't jerks so they treat whoever is there with respect no matter what's happening on the screen. Unless it's a developer with lots of insight or someone they're friends with, they usually fall kinda flat.

I don't mind EX's, so long as they're not like the Borderlands 2 one - bland and boring.

It's so obvious that dude has probably done the same demo a hundred times over. He's bored and tired.

Then again, it's still better than nothing.

You obviously haven't watched the Borderlands 2 EX yet.

I could count the number of EXs I've watched through to the end on one hand. The number I enjoyed would be even less. They are just glorified promotional pieces, they remind me of playing games having my hand held at booths during gaming conventions.

It pretty much just boils down to GB staff asking a question, developer giving a hyperbolic answer and then we proceed to awkward silence. Having developers show me how their game plays (in their opinion) and tell me what makes it worth playing has always completely defeated the purpose of Giant Bomb QLs in my opinion. I go to Giant Bomb to get an independent (somewhat at least) and honest take on gaming from a bunch of guys I enjoy listening to and find I can relate to. Nothing about EXs is independent or honest and generally not much of it is enjoyable either. Unless you get a really good crew in, like the guys from Double Fine, then the whole thing ends up being a scripted walkthrough from people I don't give a shit about. The fact Gearbox has already put out a few decently sized Developer Walkthroughs make this EX particularly redundant.

They seem to be doing their own QLs of games they already did as EXs though which is good. I have no problem with EXs if they are provided as an extra, I just don't like them when they are the only look at a game. I certainly don't blame them for taking the opportunity to do a Borderlands 2 EX though because I'm assuming the alternative is nothing, well at least until the game is actually released.

the only good QL EXes involve the Double Fine guys.

The Harmonix ones aren't bad. Again, though, they tend to have John Drake.

So basically, if an EX doesn't have a close friend, they're not terrific. It can be especially painful if the developers attempt to copy the GB style and try to make jokes that fall flat on their face.

I tend to avoid them. Except if they have Brad Muir, in which case I actively seek them out.

I agree with you but at the same time the fact that they consider all the Double Fine games automatic GOTY and talk about them 10x more than any other websites/outlets is not much better.

Dang it, I totally forgot about TNT yesterday. It looks like it was an unusual one, haha.

Man, JSJoust continues to be the one thing that makes me want to buy the Move. Rest of the indie stuff at PAX in Ryan's video looked okay. I liked the ouroboros inspired jumping game (whatever the name was) especially.

what's funny is borderlands 2 has repeatedly been their go-to case on the podcast of "I'm going to get this game anyway, so I don't need or want to see any of it pre-release"

I'm assuming they get paid, advertisement-wise, for the quick look ex's (exes?), or at least I hope they do

They don't get paid but that obviously generate traffic which then increase the ad revenue.

It's not because they "don't want to see more" that the userbase doesn't.

Gaming websites never get paid directly for doing features on games, but if there are any big ads for Borderlands 2 on Giantbomb then there's your answer.

Has anyone else been having problems with the GB HTML5 video player lately? I've been working my way back through the Persona ER and videos keep going black and starting from the beginning. It seems to happen only if they're paused for a few minutes.

I've had the same issue. If you pause it for too long then when you press play it'll go through whatever you had queued up and just full stop.

I'm guessing the issue is that since you're streaming it, if you pause it too long it stops streaming and doesn't know where to pick up again. I just start the video again and fast forward to where I was.

Preview of one of the new shirts: https://twitter.com/taswell/status/244134824711966722/photo/1/large

That may be the ugliest fucking thing I have ever seen. I understand the inspiration, but I would never in 1000 years wear that in public. I wonder if this is another buzz_clik joint, because I haven't liked pretty much any of the shirts he has done. I don't see why they insist working with him on the shirts.

Edit: Just now noticed the Buzz Clik signature on the pic, please stop working with him GB I would really like to buy another one of your shirts some day.
