I trust the Giant Bomb guys and I trust John Davison, I'm positive about this now, plus the GB guys will make sure they get what they need to do great stuff.

The only bad side is Will, Norm (Gary) and Coonce will be missed from being always there but there stuff looks great too.

It's hard to be wary when you see a pumped-up Jeff.

At the very least the team stays together and they stay employed. I'm sure whatever was happening behind the scenes before this deal was made was really stressful. If they do have a new corporate overlord now, the alternatives are much worse.

Super happy for the Tested guys too. Will and Norm have to be floating on a cloud right now. Ya had a feeling they wanted broaden their focus.

Screened isn't going to CBS, that's the thing. The other sites were sold to another company, and from the sound of things they want the infrastructure rather than the content.

Apart from the screened stuff, yeah.

The screened stuff, everyone seems excited about, so it must be an exciting avenue. Plus Mythbusters!

I was not super excited about this until a friend informed me that John Davison is in charge of Gamespot now. He's a man of integrity, and it seems like they won't mess with a good thing.

Still not super stoked about a website that seemed to be a good example of an independent content creator success story getting snapped up as part of a conglomerate but if it means more money and more freedom for those guys to let their freak flag fly, then I am in favor.

Like I said when they recorded the live video at Dave's house earlier today: if people don't watch Jeff and his excitement, his confidence that this will go well, then of course you're not going to understand, and are going to get upset.

Now that everyone has watched this video with Jeff and John, everyone suddenly feels a lot better!

So excited for regular Giant Bomb content to come back. Now we need all the semi-regular features each day! Only joking. Hopefully they'll have more resources to put up more content though.

Well, I reading one thing and people are saying the other and I'm still trying to get what's-what strait.

It's a super old joke, and it's being super annoying today with all the going-ons. Don't feel bad, just know it's been brought up a thousand times today and is nothing.

Its funny hearing them say there's no merger and then Jeff immediately refers to getting a gamespotter to talk to Vinny as 'baby steps', thats exactly the kind of step that results in them becoming the same site.

Can't help but think that Davison wants Giant Bombs editorial style to bleed into Gamespot, to create the same kind of community he had at 1UP, they just don't want to discuss it. Which is understandable because it will probably be a painful transition to find a team that fits.

No offense, it wasn't directed to you but it's a bad, long running joke... I hope that joke dies together with the old offices.

It's no problem. I am aware of the long running joke, but after coming home from work and reading all of what happened and how whiskey media was split, I wasn't sure what to believe.

I swear John Davison is like the #1 turnaround consultant in Games Journalism

he just legitimized GameSpot again in one fell swoop

I'm not sure what gives you that idea, he was in charge of a lot of publications that have folded or are operating in a diminished capacity, EGM, OPM, 1UP, Gamepro for example. Not that I would say he is directly responsible for the situation of those publications/sites but he doesn't have the stellar record you would have people believe.

Matthew Rorie ‏ @frailgesture

Alright I'm shutting down FB and Twitter for a while. Thanks for all the positive thoughts. We'll know more tomorrow.

Looks like he himself is very unsure about what he'll learn tomorrow. Don't like the guy, but this is really awful to witness. He doesn't deserve this.

They should let a Crack team of Giantbomb premium members into the gamespot offices to do an inspection, ala Hans Blix/UN style.

Get the seal of approval on it.

Rorie has been on quick looks a few times. Screened and Giant Bomb are not the same site.

Will have been on the podcast and on quick looks. Tested and Giant Bomb are not the same site.

You're overreacting.

All those places went south *after* he left though. 1UP was without a doubt the best gaming site when he was the Editor-in-Chief there; he helped create GFW Radio, 1Up Yours, the 1UP Show, and so many other great podcasts. He left to form his own site at a certain point, and then a few months later Ziff Davis collapsed, but mostly because they'd been running things terribly for a while. Same with GamePro: nobody took the magazine seriously anymore, Davison took over, and it became basically the American version of Edge. He left after he was offered his current job at CBS Interactive, someone else took over, and the magazine collapsed a few months later after misguided attempts at making it a quarterly.

Davison's a good dude. If there's anything he understands, it's what good and awesome and unique content should look like.

Rorie deserved more respect from the other guys then this. This whole thing sounds like it surprised him as much as us.

YOU DO NOT TREAT THE BOSS OF BOSSES THIS WAY DAMN IT.

Give it a few days.. maybe some fans can start a "Rorie food fund" paypal donation drive.

Giantbomb went down the tube when they all moved into the same office. And then when they started premium subs. You're way out of the loop.

Yeah, everything is going to be okay. And they will have new people join them for quick looks or whatever on occasion, but to me it really does seem like Giantbomb is still Giantbomb. Also I was a huge fan of John Davison when he was at 1up so that makes me feel a little more comfortable

Ok first off all, 1up/EGM HAD NO MONEY but all the good ideas and people, ziff was terrible at owning their brands.

Whattheyplay was extremely successful at what they set out to be.
Sold to IGN and after that the website died because IGN did not know what to do with it and all the personality had left because of it got sold.

While John was at gamepro, they were successful in the first time in YEARS, the website had traffic again, the magazine had a lot of new people subscribing the editorial team had focus and was forming a great company.
Well after John left that all went down again a little + to e fair a video game magazine these days is just not doable anymore to maintain for long.

After that it was gamespot, where he is doing fine for the past 18 months but he need the right team of people to implement the "old" "1up plan".

And with GB those are the people he was looking for.

Wasn't Rorie one of their OG homies from the Gamespot days? I'm kinda shocked that he was 100% in the dark about all these machinations. That's some legit cold blooded shit right there lol.

I completely agree with you, he makes great content, he was great as EIC at EGM back in the late 90's but that has nothing to do with being successful at business though, he sold his own site whattheyplay.com to IGN a couple of years ago and it doesn't exist anymore either. I hope everything works out great for them all, and visiting gamespot for the first time ever today, I was surprised to read that great Poison story on the front page, so I don't doubt that his intentions are to continue having them produce great content, but that doesn't mean it will be financially viable.

Movie/TV sites, Technology sites, this is 2 gaming sites in the same office sharing staff to cover the same games...it's a bit different.

I'm not saying its a bad thing. And Im sure the reason they dont want to talk about what the plan is that it's just a plan and it might not work out that way, but I do find it hard to believe Gamespot would buy another game site just to leave it running, in their office.

I can't wait to see the next two weeks of video content and listen to the future podcasts. The possibilities are exciting.

I'll give the Giant Bomb guys the benefit of the doubt. They deserve that much. But why would Rorie post about the podcast equipment being gone for "Chili Day" and hoping to record a Screened podcast "when it gets back" if he knew? Seems off.

Seems this stuff had been in the works for awhile, so I assume he just said that not to tip anyone off. I mean they moved there stuff out GDC weekend, I can't believe they would just do all that with out telling matt.
