Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

I like the heel analogy. In any case, when you mix them together it usually turns out real well.

Anyone ever met them at PAX or something similar? I'm heading to PAX east this week, in theory I might actually meet them at some point.

The only time Ryan pissed me off was when Vinny was making his way through Demon's Souls and Ryan seemed determined to disregard everything that's good about the game and dwell on its problems, all without ever actually playing it

Whatever happened to the common courtesy of "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"?

I don't know. When the Redner Group suggested that, everyone got pissy.

Vinny got his revenge when he made Ryan play Dark Souls and Ryan seemed to enjoy it!

Jeff was just as dismissive of Dark Souls, if I remember correctly.

The heel analogy reminds me of the time that Ryan started the online petition to get Jeff to stop the NDX in return for an early Bombcast, and it never hit the goal, and at the same time Jeff's pro-NDX petition that he created in response more than doubled its goal.

Ryan went from all enthusiastic about the gag and constantly retweeting the link, to really upset and feigning apathy when people pointed out how badly his side "lost," and started ranting about how it was all a fake rivalry so he really didn't lose anything. It was like a heel shouting "WELL WRESTLING'S FAKE SO I DIDN'T ACTUALLY LOSE THE MATCH."

In fairness some of those reviews were pretty awful. They weren't critiques of a very flawed game, they were just excuses to spew as much venom as possible. I credit Giant Bomb for having not fallen into that trap with their review of DNF.

Also, you guys are being pretty rough on Ryan. I am not a Ryan/Patrick fan at all but damn. Giant Bomb would not be what it is without Ryan. He was there from day zero. The Bombcast was just him and Jeff when it was Arrow Pointing Down. I don't like his dismissiveness and tend to avoid quick looks in which he's driving, but he's a vital component.

And then he played Demon's Souls during a live show and did well at it.

I remember that. You can't stop the train, Ryan.

I'm not being rough on him. I'm just stating how he generally acts. Just like how I don't think Patrick's funny, but that doesn't mean I don't like him. I just don't think he's very funny. Truthfully, Jeff's the only one who makes me consistently laugh, but that doesn't mean I don't like the other people.

Ryan usually defends the big companies, and sometimes he's right, but it seems that he's never been pro-consumer. Except when it personally happens to him(BestBuy)

If this thread keeps going the way its going Patrick is going to write a long poorly thought out story about how everyone in here is just being entitled internet crybabies and explaining why him and Ryan are the best and since they work really really hard they shouldn't be criticized.

I'm all for critizising them but talking about how they should get fired? Fuck off with that shit. Same goes for comparing their videos to rape, it's fucking stupid even if there was a truth to it being bad material. Not sure why but the giantbomb threads gets a unusual amount of garbage like that.

I don't think they should be fired at all.

The Chrono Trigger Endurance Run was painful to watch. The quicklooks that they do together are informative, but not entertaining. I'm betting it's a case of everyone else being lazy or busy and Patrick is the only one willing to fill in for a quicklook.

It is so strange, they're now under the same umbrella that Gamespot is. That has to hurt.

Price is Right intro was so amazing, though.

Have they mentioned anything about a new Endurance Run?

Only don't ask, and won't happen for a while because they're still reacquiring equipment and getting settled.

Honestly, they're more positives and hopeful towards a future one than they normally are.

I think they've begun to accept that it's too popular of a feature to just abandon.

I still think anyone predicting a modern game is fooling themselves.

I hope they don't abandon it. The Persona 4 run is best thing. I haven't watched the DP one yet because I want to play the game at some stage.

I'd prefer if the next game wasn't modern myself.

I hope they pick a better game for the next ER and maybe a better combo to play it. The Chrono ER and Farmville intern garbage are the only GB features I couldn't stand watching.

The Persona 4 endurance run is head and shoulders above any of the other ERs that have come after. The game fit the feature perfectly and Vinny and Jeff were really into it. Deadly Premonition had it's moments but since neither group seemed to be enjoying themselves, it just wasn't the same. I tried watching the Chrono Trigger ER but after a few episodes, I just completely lost interest.

Now if you count the secret members only Phantasmagoria ER, then Persona 4 has competition.

I'm hoping they take a PS1/PS2/Dreamcast/Saturn/N64 era game. Get some VA going, could be entertaining.

Hell, even a PC game from around that time would be great.

I think my dream ER right now would be Vinny and someone (Jeff? Dave?) doing Baldur's Gate, given that it's about to be released again. Either that or Vinny and Dave doing Icewind Dale 2, with Vinny driving. Just might die a little too often.

You must have read my mind. Vinny, Dave, Baldur's Gate = ER Magic

I'm not sure if Dave would ever have the time, though.

An Infinity Engine game with Vinny driving would be magical. I don't think Jeff has the patience for that anymore it would probably have to be Dave or Drew. In the last bombcast it sounded like Vinny was the only one who had ever played any of those game.

Funny, I haven't heard them being critical of Metacritic ever since they got acquired by CBS...

Huh...They've been critical of Metacritics in the past?

Ryan is a probably a huge fan anyway so he would probably shut them down and switch topic anytime somebody would try to talk about it in the podcast.

The people at MC should use this as a chance to get GB onto a ten point scale.

The five point scale has never made sense.

I think it's perfect. You have a middle-ground, and then two shades of good and two shades of bad.

It also kind of makes sense, because with Rex around, I doubt Vinny would have the time to play BG on his own. So play it for work! Besides which, it's an older game so you can't really claim SPOILERS, and the experience of playing it can be totally different based on who you play it with and what class you pick, etc, etc.

To me a two seems like a train wreak and a 3 seems like a game that's great but is held back by small things.

Isn't that your own biases and not the scale? To me 3 is a game that is alright, but not worth it if you aren't a fan, and 2 is a flawed game that even a fan of the series/genre should think twice about.

1 is an unmitigated disaster.

And if to you 2 is a train wreck, what the hell is a 1 then?

Jeff in particular is pretty harsh on the Metacritic and the ten point scale. I like the their system, but on occasion I've felt like a game has gotten 4 or 5 instead of a 4.5 only because they don't have half points. Mass Effect 3 and Uncharted 3 seem to be the most recent examples of this. I don't know how you would fix this though.

The problem with the 10 point scale is anything from 0 to 5 is considered raw garbage anyway so there's really no point in the entire lower half of the scale.

I think Edge show the point of a ten point scale well.
Though to be honest I much prefer using percent, but can understand those don't see the point in such a gradation.

That's a problem with peoples perception of the ten point scale. In theory it should be the standard for all reviews, but it has been abused over the years. It's too bad, as it could be more precise than a 5 point scale.

But why do we need more precise? To compare subjective reviews against one another?

The 10 point scale suggest a precision that just isn't there. Apart from the technical stuff like graphics and bugs there is little objectivity in a game review. I mean whats the difference between a 91 and a 92? a scale of broken, bad, ok, good, great is more than enough imo.

More precise is useless, the difference between 5-6 or 6-7 for the average consumer as a purchasing guide is negligible. The difference between 3-4 stars is much more accurate.

Nevermind that some of the big sites use a 100 point scale, so it should be plenty precise, right? A 10 point scale is useless.

My point was that Brad can say anything and because of his accent people won't question him, same thing that happened with Rita.

Brad has an accent?

Maybe it's because I'm from Texas, but he sounds normal to me. Vinny is the only member with a noticeable accent that I can hear, and that just depends on what he's talking about.
