Giant Bomb Thread 2: A thread on a popular internet message board

Not trying to sound like a dick, but I do not enjoy anyone from gamespot which is why I never go there. I would visit gb substantially less if they were in gb content consistently. Luckily so far it's just been a quiet guy in the corner during some tnts which seems pointless.

i honestly don't know anything about current GS post GB thang. But if they can give me a reason to go check them out, i'm all for it.

If not... fuck them! But BLLS was always about flaunting the goods right? Show me what's awesome about GS (without requiring me to dive in that cesspool :P).

As for what I'd like to see GB do... I think at this point, like everyone else, they should focus on making more videos over anything else. I don't use the site at all now that I can just subscribe to an RSS feed, so spending time "upgrading" the website isn't important to me, especially if it means Dave and Drew don't have time to make more Flight Club videos. Similarly, if it's a choice between having Brad write reviews or having Brad play more Doom 2, I'd rather he play more Doom 2.

I believe Jeff said that the reviews bring in the most traffic.

I want my free audio book at audible.com/giantbomb.

just make sure to enter a valid credit card so they can start charging you after you forget to cancel

In terms of pure clicks on the story, probably. But I'd imagine someone who watches a quicklook for 30 minutes is considered to be more valuable than someone who clicks on a review, skims for 45 seconds, then leaves.

Actually they both bring in the same amount of cash (same page view, same number of clicks) but the review guy takes a lot less bandwith so he's actually more profitable.

It's debatable, but his point was that Quick Looks probably have a higher "page view to game purchase" ratio than text reviews do.

Yeah, I just don't think you can really rely on charity to operate a business off.

Oh, it ain't no charity, Flight Club is worth its weight in gold. That was more just what that $50 goes to %-wise over the time I've subscribed it's been heavily weighted to free stuff. I like to think it's more positive that way.

Hey guys, have you heard of GOTOMYPC.COM. It's a great service for when I want to work from home!

Do you want to start your own video game wiki? Why not try out SQUARESPACE.COM. Use GIANTBOMB and get TEN PERCENT OFF.

You know, these days at the Giantbomb offices, we notice that a lot of people are sending us mail from STAMPS.COM.

Yeah, as a podcast listener, I'm really fucking tired of each show having the same three sponsors.

It's a question of what's more valuable. A person who pays 35-50 dollars a year or a person coming in to troll about the latest low score for a popular franchise.

Haha this is why I usually skim through the money zone on the MBMBaM podcast.

There has to be a point of diminishing returns for this stuff. It's almost like a pyramid scheme... join our affiliate program and for every new person you help sign up, we give you 10 bucks!

Except, well, at some point there aren't going to be any more users who don't have an audible/gotomypc/stamps.com/squarespace/godaddy/whatever account. Then what happens? Podcasts suddenly die? :p

Irony time!

45 minute quick looks Oh yes! But they're always entertaining, except when they're boring.

That said, that's far less ironic than a thread about a popular gaming message board on a popular gaming message board.

This whole concept involves FAR too much recursion for me.

If those are the MBMBaM ads then they ruined completely the show, in addition to the Maximum Fun garbage.

I don't know, the couple of minutes the ads take up aren't hard to scrub through. But I agree, the Maximum Fun commercials are pretty bad.

Ughh so from Jeff's formspring...

It's been great working with John, but honestly, it doesn't really change much at all. I'm still having regular (CONSTANT) meetings with the management team about where we're at, where we're going, and what we need to get Giant Bomb to where we want to be next year. I sat down with Ben (who's coming in from our UK office to replace John) last week and he's a sharp guy who understands how dramatically the Putting Content on the Internet game has changed over the last five years. He's the guy who brought in Danny O'Dwyer over there, so I'm pretty convinced that he understands what's important.

All those management meeting are not reassuring. I bet they have a lot of buzzword and "cool ideas" flying around from the management guys...

...Big Ben?

Maybe for stuff like TNT where they're cutting etc, but there are some great YT channels out there ran by one guy who do the same thing as GB at a much more regular rate (and it's not even their job).

That's why I'm quite curious.

Doesn't Vinny and Drew handle video content for Comic Vine as well?

I think Giantbomb needs to do a whole lot more video reviews. I know they use "But it's difficult to do!" but really you can just reuse Quicklook footage for the game material.

Do these video reviews get enough views to be worth the effort though? If they were super-popular they probably would have found some way to keep making them.

Iirc video reviews are by far the most watched videos on the site, and I'd imagine they rank well above normal reviews. The argument for not making them is that it takes too much of Drew/Vinny's time to be worth it since they can't do anything else while they're making the video.

I think they've said the video reviews are worth the time only when posted the same week of release. To do that they need the game early, but that never seems to happen for them.

They should really cut down on the QLEX shit. I never ever watch those.

But I have to admit that the last Madden QL was pure gold. I loved it. Great stuff right there. :lol

I find the heavily scripted nature of video reviews to be tedious to watch. I much prefer text where I can read at my own pace (which is usually faster than someone reading off a script into the camera). This isn't exclusive to GB's video reviews, I just don't like watching them in general.

They're the most watched when they're posted directly around the time of the game's release. Get a week out, and they're all but useless and don't get the hits.

And, if you notice, the footage isn't random. They try to make sure that the footage shown at any specific point of time is reinforcing what the reviewer is saying.

also the quick look is a much more natural look at the game. I much prefer them to accompany reviews. Which is why I dislike the entire EX quicklooks.

They will never hear the end of it.

I miss the video reviews myself. I understand they're hard to do, but I thought they were worth it for the bigger games of the year.

I think they're entirely pointless for the bigger games. Especially since they tended to do them for the bigger GOOD games. I wouldn't mind if they did them for lesser known games.

And Shiodshi of EGM/Warning a Huge Podcast got all bent out of shape about it.

She posts here frequently, you know.

Aram used to get bent out of shape about it as much as she did until he found out that Giant Bomb actually liked Persona 4 and that the Endurance Run was not a 100-hour ripping apart of the game.

I hope someone told him to get bent.

If there was an evil in this world that had to be dealt with, but no one would step up to see justice done... It might fall to the closest person at hand to bear the burden of punishing them.

...Don't you think?

I love WAHP and Shidoshi usually comes across as a good guy, but he needs to get over himself on this one.

I'm aware.

I have never heard or seen Aram get upset about the ER on GAF. I believe that was Nick Maragos.

"Bust Downs' Mailbag"

I totally ate most of these Norwegian candies in the... month or so I spent there ages ago. The dragster things are the cheapest things they have in stores there. Actually the cheapest candy there is if you're starved for money and want some terrible candy.
