Giant Bombcast E3 2011 Day Zero

I think you guys must have missed the point of their Vita criticisms. They're saying, "Wait a second, I've heard all this before..." referring to how the PSP launched with a beautiful screen and the promise of being a home console in your pocket, and yet it ended up being a disappointment. So now they're seeing the exact same marketing line and wondering what's going to be different this time, especially since the mobile market has moved even farther away from the "console in your pocket" position since the first one launched.

It's a completely different market though I don't think anyone was prepared for a world where you could essentially have PC in your pocket back in 2004. 3G and the cross compatibility with Android/PS Suite are game changers for the casual market with cheap downloads in a well organized interface. Also it's not $300 bucks and the games are equal with the current gen not one gen behind.

The obvious thing would be that the PSP couldn't deliver the console experience because of the tech gap, and the lack of double triggers/dual analogue. Vita is able to replicate the console experience pretty accurately.

I was just going to say the same thing. The PSP never realized those lofty goals. With the Vita, at least it has dual analog sticks, and enough RAM/graphical capability to do a "full game" experience without making it look like a PS1 game.

Besides that, it also has the touch screen, the touch panel on the back and a bunch of other stuff. I'm pretty excited for it, honestly. Obviously it's not guaranteed to be successful on a mainstream level, but $249 is a damn good price to start with, and, assuming the games are there, people will want this thing. It seems foolish to dismiss it as a failure before it even launches simply because you're satisfied with playing Fruit Ninja on the toilet.

What's wrong with him? I think he's been a great fit so far.

See one page back. He constantly interrupts guests and fellow Bombcasters and almost any time someone makes a witty comment or joke he repeats it several times per podcast to the point where it's been run into the ground, shot and left for dead buried in a desert.

I like Klepek overall but he does do some stuff that rubs me the wrong way. Namely, he's a little over confident with the GB guys. I know the dude's an accomplished game journalist and I'm the last guy to knock someone for their age if they can back their shit up but just the way he interrupts an OG GB dude or how brazen he is (ex. Saying, "I'll take that 3DS away from you!" to Brad, then actually doing it. Saying "Fuck you" to Alex, and though it was obvious he was meant to be joking, it came off as pretty gotdamn douchey) with them.

Having the xbox dudes on was a mistake. It's turning into having to be very careful how they critique the press conference. Dude, E or whatever, keeps saying "fair enough, but..." Fucking annoying.

Who's Shane and how would he fix that though? The Gametrailers guy? Because he's a dick.

yup.

And I know some here maybe give him free pass because he is a fellow gaffer too, but thing is he is so annoying and I prefer him to stay far away from the mic/camera

I like Patrick a lot. Liked his stuff at 1up and G4, and now Giantbomb.

I think you all are overreacting/looking for and overblowing things he does/says just because he's the new guy.

No, that's not it. He caught heat here when he was doing news on 1up Yours.

Yea I don't get it. He's like the only person that knows about things outside the game he's currently playing.

I don't think Patrick is too bad... (EDIT: He's funny, would be fine if he was challenged more often.)

GiantBomb's #1 problem is that on too many issues they all feel the same way. (Brad is especially a push-over.) I am not going to say they are wrong about everything, but they really get nowhere with a one-sided non-argument.

So like in this one instance of talking about Vita, basically no one was there to say something like "Then why are "console experiences" with bad graphics popular and highly acclaimed on portables right now?"

Another one: Car wheels are dumb! Mind you, Vinny spending money on something he is never going to use is fine to rag on, but some of the arguments that popped up are downright silly and there is no racing game fan to even explain why people like wheels.

(Anything Japanese sticks out. FromSoftware's entire line, (deeper) fighting games, not understanding DmC hate, etc.)

It just doesn't make for good discussion and you are going to definitely annoy someone lol.

#2 problem are those microsoft guys(this is hyperbole). I guess they must be much more bearable when you can skip over them lol, but you have to understand for a lot of GB fans it was an extremely anti-GB, stupid show during one of the most exciting gaming days of the year. GB guys are usually interested in hearing their fans opinions, so let the fans will voice them.

just wait for tonight, when they change their tune and suddenly find console games like

zelda, mario kart, luigi's mansion, animal crossing, paper mario, super mario 3d, and resident evil to be a good game lineup, without saying a word about them all being "console experiences"

edit: as for the podcast overall: I REALLY don't like Klepek as a guest or member.

You're implying a lot with that post.

Both of which are wrong.

Okay. I'd like to try and imply again.

Please, give us your honest 1. - 5. on the Vita then. Honest, please.

Nintendo has already shown they know how to make their franchises on their handhelds really unique. Sony hasn't.

are you serious? They're the same damn games!

Nintendo's major summer 3ds game is a n64 port, and their big games for this fall are another n64 port, another mario kart, paper mario, luigi's mansion and animal crossing.

outside of Kid Icarus I don't think Nintendo showed a single new game idea for the 3ds today.

They are all watered down versions of console franchises. I don't really see any way to consider any of them "really unique" versions...

Look at Modnation Racers vita vs. Mario Kart 3D

Which took better advantage of the tools each platform provides?

You make it sound like some sort of mathematical equation where somebody who likes a handheld version of Zelda must also like a handheld version of Uncharted. Sure, in some cases if a person doesn't, it might be because they are biased.

That doesn't seem like the case here. Seems like it's just differing tastes to me.

Are you laughing at the very notion of games journalism (the most tired meme on GAF) or are you laughing because you just happen to be ignorant about the actual gaming journalism Klepeck has done?

If Klepek is considered an "accomplished journalist" then gaming journalism really is shit. That link doesn't mean anything.

Note: i'm not saying he is bad at his job, i'm saying his work is not remarkable in any way whatsoever.

So you are ignorant, then. Thanks for clearing that up.

The man does good work, I just don't care for him on the podcast. Let him stick to handling the news for the site.

you have a point with the ports, but do you really think the original 3DS games will be like this?

Sony is literally selling the machine as an extension of your t.v. Can you imagine Nintendo saying Zelda 3DS is exactly like Skyward Sword like Sony is with Uncharted? They spent more time on how similar water moves than how unique the game is.

What? The two Uncharted games (PS3 & PSV) are completely different.

No, because the 3ds couldn't run Skyward Sword. Nintendo had to go and dust off a n64 game to sell you for $40.

I seem to recall him breaking the story on the PSPGo, but I may be mistaken.

What would you say about the Vita if you had been sitting there on the couch with them?

That was David Ellis, I'm surprised anyone managed to forget that it was David Ellis's news break considering how often he brought it up on podcasts

After seeing all the Klepeck hate in this thread, I started paying more attention for the rest of the podcast to see if he really was speaking over people, interrupting them, etc. He has yet to do it in the last hour I've listened to except maybe once or twice where it seemed like the person was done (which isn't a bad thing imo, better to keep things moving on a podcast, even if it means stepping a little bet on others toes.) So I'm not really getting all the complaints. He does talk a lot, probably more than anyone else except maybe Ryan, but it's a podcast. What do you expect him to do?

Haha, somehow I became the Giantbomb defense force this week.

Haha, now that you mention it I do remember him bringing that up constantly.

I've came here to check if the show gets any better. 40 minutes in, but just glancing over this thread I'm not going to waste any more time on this one.

I think it's much more enjoyable after the MS dude goes.

This. I like reading his work a lot and always have, but he just makes me want to punch things on podcasts and the like. Will always have time for him but man, give him a microphone and he morphs into... I dunno, something I do not get along with in the slightest.

MS guys were annoying .. but then again, they are company guys. I hate it when they were trying to justify why they didn't need a megaton announcement. This is once a year! This is the biggest electronic entertainment show that is held yearly! Don't try to justify it if you didn't have one considering the previous years had .. "GTA IV tattoo", "Kojima on stage for Rising" .. "FFXIII going multi-platform" .. etc. Shock and Awe baby .. Shock and Awe!

Holy shit, did that one guy just compare having ads all over the dashboard to ads on the PSN Store. These guys are ridiculous.

And again Blow calls them out with the cheetos and car ads on the dashboard.

I thought Blow was great, but his thoughts on the nature of endemic advertising seemed misplaced, I feel like MS probably know more about ad space than he does.

I finally listened to the whole thing and although there was a tiny bit of cringeworthy stuff (basically the last couple of minutes the Xbox guys were on) I really don't see why people were saying it was "terribad" and the like. I'm guessing you never listened to Beyond or something like that.

Would company guys from Nintendo or Sony have been any less positive about their company's products? Doubt it.

Do people make the same complaints about quicklook Exs and the like when company reps help the GB guys play through games?

And to those who didn't like the subject matter, well you are probably better off not listening to it and wasting your time complaining about it. Not that I would deny you your right to do so. I have listened to podcasts about topics I have zero interest in on more than one occasion and still enjoyed them thoroughly (Tested podcast for example, not much of a tech fan, most Retronauts eps, etc).

Well looking at the ads on the dashboard, it doesn't seem like it.

Nothing upsets me more on podcasts than XMB hate.

See what all your bitching got us? Fucking Vita bubbles!! I hope you're all happy

Oh god, the bombcast even approaching beyond territory is like the worst possible thing you could say

Yeah, those XBOX guys were a bit much. That's the problem with having 'company men' on shows like this. Obviously because of their job they can't really say anything other than super-lame stuff about the "transformative Kinect experience," etc.

Overall, still enjoyed the podcast.

EFF THE HATERS, VITA FO' LIFE, BITCH!!!!

Can't believe they were hyping Bing. "I searched for X-Men and found an animated series on Netflix! Amazingly cool! Only with Kinect!"
