Giant Bombcast E3 2011 Day Zero

Stammering/overtalking Patrick is back. He was really solid on previous Bombcast but I think he was having a hard time getting his point across when there are more than 3 people in the Bombcrew.

Klepek really annoys me. He seems to think that just because he loves his iOS devices that handheld gaming devices are no longer necessary.
He needs to learn that he's a gaming enthusiast, and nothing but an armchair financial analyst or marketer at best. He needs some humble pie.

I fell asleep after the first hour of them talking about how awesome Kinect and Braid were. Did they ever get around to talking about, you know, E3?

He needs a little perspective and objectivity.

Honestly, so do Ryan and Jeff. These guys can't seem to get that their experiences and preferences don't apply to everyone.

Listening to them talk about the Vita and then realizing that most of them bought 250 dollar 3DSs made my brain hurt.

It was hilarious listening to Klepek fail at trying to update his 3DS right after calling the PSVita a dead platform.

.
Doesn't everyone else listen to them precisely to hear their experiences and preferences? I must be crazy I guess, since I do.

I must be crazy as well. If I just wanted straight up news coverage of this shit I would read the damn BBC's account of the conference and be done with it.

I listen, because I generally like the personalities. That doesn't mean it doesn't annoy me when shit gets spewed. It's just an idiotic thing to say that the PSVita is dead on arrival on the basis of "because iOS!" (except in Japanese "because Monster Hunter").

That wasn't what they were saying. They were discussing how the name of the game of portable gaming has changed and that the price of entry for alot of the PSV games are going to be really damn steep compared to the games people are accustomed to buying on iOS and the like. That isn't to say that people won't buy PSV games, it is just a tougher market out there than when handhelds were first introduced and even a few years ago.

Skip about halfway through when the regular crew takes over and the 'guests' leave.

Unproven, immeasurable speculation by people who have zero clue what they're talking about. That's the problem. I want to hear them tell me about what awesome games they've seen at E3, not what they speculate Sony's financial future will be in the short-term with the launch of the Vita.

Hearing Patrick just outright dismiss the PSP God of War games after Alex explained why they actually work on a handheld pretty much summed up the whole conversation.

They talk about video games and video game systems. They're skeptical about vita based on their opinions. I'm sure you could find tons of people with the opposite opinion who are excited about it. I'm also sure based on what you and others have written that you aren't against them giving opinions, you just disagree with the opinion and/or want it to be wrong. Seems like you know what you're getting with these guys if you've listened to them ever, so wishing they'd be something they aren't is a bit silly at this point.

I don't agree with all of their guesses or speculation or opinions, I just realize that I listen to them to hear those things, and that's what they do. The whiners in this thread seem to just be mad that someone isn't gushing all over something that the whiners are themselves excited about.

I don't know how to respond to this other than say you're putting words in my mouth, everything you're saying isn't true at all, and you've completely missed the point of my argument.

Talk about games GB. Not about things you know nothing about.

Apparently you've never listened to the bombcast before today. What does "they know nothing about" mean? It's clear from your posts that it means "I disagree with your opinion, so shut up".

Here's how every NGP/Vita conversation goes...

1. The Vita has all the same problems the PSP had

2. Well, it has better games this time though

3. Yeah, but they're all console ports

4. Actually, no they do some things different. Here are some examples

5. Well, I would rather play those games on my TV

7. Who wants to watch cutscenes on a bus?

You can touch the front and back of your TV though. Nor does it have a camera. That's the thing that'll help it separate but it's true they need more than just ports. They need games you CAN'T play on a TV.

Guess what, some people feel that way. Guess what, it's not a personal attack on you if they do.

Blow really needs a podcast, the MS shill really needs to never be on one again.

EDIT: He even just called himself a shill, christ.

everyone but, possibly vinny, on that podcast needs some objectivity. and i'm sure vinny's is because he's not as in cahoots with the video game company people as others and he doesn't do it as a job.

Blargh, It's that time of year where we get hyperdefensive about our favored platforms! Yes. It is a weekday.

Vinny

Get a wheel. No one would play guitar hero without a plastic guitar. Get a wheel.

Wasn't Klepek's "dead on arrival" comment in the context of being a substantial, mainstream success in the United States? I also remember him stressing that the original PSP has sold well in the same conversation.

I also think that their obsession with updating the 3DS partially stems from Jeff's... interest... in the eShop.

It's just Funny they jokes about Yoshinori Ono's big pockets and that Vita is godzilla-like in size, yet they completely ignored that Ken Levine pull one out of his jeans pocket, I guess Vita is the system to hate and make jokes about now.

Or you know, it just didn't come up. They just had a long ass day of standing playin vidya games, I doubt they're able to process every moment of the day's exact events the same way we are now in hindsight.

You forgot

6. I want pick up and play games not cinematic games like Uncharted
the answer to that is well LittleBigPlanet, Modnation, WIpeOut, Sound Shapes, Hotshots, SFxT, LittleDeviants and etc all look to be pick up and play games. And lets not forget PS Suite support as well as maybe getting save state feature from PSP Go.

Wasn't the great Bombcast i've ever heard. The Microsoft guys were total idiots, and then it was about an hour of Vita hate with a little bit of doom & gloom for the entire portable games industry thrown in. Hopefully tonight's show will be better, and it should be with Jaffe there.

I said this in the first thread about this podcast, but I liked the first half. I think hearing Blow complain about a lot of problems he has with Xbox Live, and hearing the Microsoft guys explain why those rules are those rules. It's an interesting conversation between Blow who just wants to make good (and new) games and Microsoft who wants to make money off this venture.

Podcast spoilers:
Blow:
Why do I have to have exactly 12 achievements worth 200 points? What if I don't want to do that?
Microsoft guys:
King Kong had 970 achievement points. We got lots of complaints about this to this day. So we made a rule about every game.
Ryna speaking for Bastion:
Bastion got into trouble because it doesn't get to a menu in the first so many minutes.
Microsoft guys:
If it doesn't get to a menu, people think the system/game is broken, they call support, they take it back, etc. Having said that, we made an exception for Bastion.
As stupid as that response sounds, having worked at retail and having people return systems and games for the dumbest reasons imaginable, I totally believe them.

And this whole "they're just Microsoft schill" bit is defied by the fact that they admit to a lot of Xbox Live problems. They admit there are some real problems communicating with XBLA developers, that there's too much red tape. They admit that the way patches work is not nearly as good as places like iOS and Steam, and at one point they tell Blow they don't want to lose him to places like iOS and Steam, and want to figure out ways to make it work.

I thought it was a really interesting conversation. It's not very funny like you expect from Bombcast, but it's hardly "How awesome is your system? Oh so awesome." If you expect pretty high up Microsoft guys to get on a podcast and say "Our system sucks, look how cool we are criticizing ourselves" you're always going to be disappointed.

So,

Dead on Arrival = Moderate success?

Hmm....

Not saying that I agree with his word choice, just putting it in context for people that haven't listened to it yet. In other words, the segment isn't just "Sony bashing," which some people would understandably not care to listen to.

so do I

That and the fact that he always repeats other people's jokes roughly 5 times. Klepeck's a decent enough writer but horrible podcaster.

Anyone know when tonight's live stream will start?
If you go to any page other than the home page (click on any news story), there's a link at the top to the livestream with a countdown clock.

It's at 2hours 21 minutes at the moment.

I think you guys must have missed the point of their Vita criticisms. They're saying, "Wait a second, I've heard all this before..." referring to how the PSP launched with a beautiful screen and the promise of being a home console in your pocket, and yet it ended up being a disappointment. So now they're seeing the exact same marketing line and wondering what's going to be different this time, especially since the mobile market has moved even farther away from the "console in your pocket" position since the first one launched.

I don't think everyone would have their panties in a bunch if this hadn't happened during E3. It was an interesting conversation, but we want to hear about the GB guys takes on the conferences, products, and games, not the xbox certification process.

The obvious thing would be that the PSP couldn't deliver the console experience because of the tech gap, and the lack of double triggers/dual analogue. Vita is able to replicate the console experience pretty accurately.

Bets on how long it takes them to get into Nintendo showing off the first new console in over half a decade tonight? I'm down for half an hour.
