Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

I don't think it even matters if it was a classic/non obscure game. CT practically holds their hand and they still can't figure out/remember things. lol.

I don't think we're nearly as worked up as you guys are about this thread. Why does it matter to you so much that people think these guys are playing awfully? Why do you give a shit?
I didn't until Ryan tweeted about how annoying the constant complaining was. That's all there is to it. When it gets so bad they not only acknowledge it, but say "this is part of why we hate doing these", don't you think it's gone a bit too far?

Just watched the episode. God damn it. How do they forget to take 2poch to the future? Fucking dumbasses.
Still love the Endurance Run though. It's just a shame that they seem to blame the game for having to backtrack when the game quite clearly gave them a vehicle that allows them to go everywhere they want...
Also I don't know how people can be so incredibly forgetful in general.

Nobody would be complaining if they actually bothered to pay attention and read the game text.

No, I don't. You work at a gaming site, you do it because it generates attention for your site. I'd wager the vast majority of people would have no problem doing the things the game is asking of them, and would thus not encounter such 'harsh criticism' (When in reality it's just us discussing a video series that we're at least MOSTLY enjoying). As noted, that was in response to a particularly bad tweet, but regardless it's a poor attitude to take. They are playing the game like buffoons, so why do they not deserve to have it pointed out?

I get pissed off when someone tells me I missed a coin in mario or telling me to "shoot that guy". Imagine hundreds of tweets and PM's telling you that you suck and what you need to do. I probably wouldn't want to do it again.

Don't you think those are pretty minor nits? I mean this is the mario equivilent of "Hey you forgot how to hold run and jump for more distance" and you keep dying trying to make a long jump or something. Nobody is in this thread going "lol, they didn't give the speed tabs to Robo" or anything inane.

Honestly both sides are allowed to talk about what they like or don't like. Just because somebody wants to voice something they find annoying doesn't mean they are "srs business" either.

I don't disagree with this. But the thread got off to a really bad start with the "watching this endurance run feels like being raped" post, and I'd wager that a lot of the other incensed posters are being (unfairly) viewed through the lens of that early debacle.

They'll blame the game.

Why? Last time they screwed up (the scouts) they admitted they were being idiots. Did you not see it? I know you said you gave up on this ER, but if that's the case why are you even piping up about how Ryan reacts to his mistakes?

Every time someone uses the "playing perfectly" or "FAQ speed run with no jokes" strawmen, an angel cries.

It's only a strawman if people haven't actually said it. People in this thread have actually complained about them not playing it 'properly', or not playing it optimally.

Also, as to Ryan's twitter comments, because the person who posted the screencap graciously avoided including the context, Ryan's tweets came immediately after this one:

@taswell You must all have just wanted everyone to stop asking you for ERs ever again, so engineered the worst possible ER you could.

So yeah, it's all about Ryan complaining about people having opinions.

Outside of one or two people (who I can't actually recall seeing at the moment), no, not really.

I saw people on SomethingAwful going "ahaha holy shit they forgot the time machine" and I came to check out this thread and saw the same bad white knight posters going "PERFECT RUN" like always and it annoyed me. Then I saw Ryan and Patrick's twitters where they said "well that option hadn't appeared before" or "the game does a horrible job messaging that to you," so yeah they've already blamed the game.

Outside of one or two people (who I can't actually recall seeing at the moment), no, not really.

It's more common than that. You still get people complaining about them using the robot, or spamming lightning 2 whenever possible. It's not TheYanger complaining about rape, but he's already established himself as the worst poster in this thread, there's no return from that.

And in the past they've also accepted that overlooking the scouters or not reading where to go was them playing as an idiot, that didn't stop you from posting a Vinny/Ryan dichotomy. But let me get this straight: basically you're posting complaining about GAF commentary of an ER you're following via SA commentary?

No. I entered a thread when I heard about something funny, I saw something that annoyed me, and I responded to it.

Why this is so hard to understand is very strange.

Consider this: by modern standards, the game does do a bad job of messaging that to you.

In any modern game, there would be a HUD element that says "Time Travel: (Y)." There would be a map that you could bring up with an 'X' telling you where to go. There would be a detailed quest log with everything you needed to do next and every place you'd been so far.

When you're used to these things because you play a ton of modern games all the time and rarely ever play anything more than a year old (because it's your job), screwing up the time travel thing is a tad more understandable.

Now the thing with the scouts? Still just silly. :lol

I consider the described modern messaging as bad, not the other way round. In Chrono Trigger, the design teaches you what to do (you can't progress without using the flying time machine) tacitly and self-evidently.

Bullshit.

They've already traveled through time using the 2poch. All they had to do is press the same button. And if they don't remember how to travel through time? Do what most players do. Press one of the four buttons on the front of the controller or the two triggers to see which one it is.

And furthermore, the "messaging" is the fact that the previous 20 minutes of the game's plot revolves around you regaining your stuff so you can use it, Dalton making changes to your ship, and you fighting him to get it back. Why on Earth would that much effort go into your time ship if you didn't have to use it?

The bottom line is, the game is not required to think for you.

And by the way, I think we are all aware by now that putting a HUD element on the screen is no guarantee that they would have used the time machine either.

So I watched the last episode and after that fight with Dalton when the 2poch starts going haywire, Bobo says that its Time Compass has gone haywire.

If I were playing, that would lead me to believe that I couldn’t use it for time travel at the moment and that I’d have to use the portals. So I can see why they just ditched it. I feel like this particular goof they made is partly due to the game implying a course of action from that line of dialog.

Not excusing their previous goofs in battles with elementals and all that. but, then again, neither have they.

While that's totally fair, they didn't even bother to try.

Maybe I'm just weird, but when a game tries to lock me out of the easiest course of action, I try it anyway, just to MAKE SURE it doesn't work. That's just how I work.

I'm not saying they're retards for not doing the same, but considering that they never pay attention to the text anyway, I'm surprised they didn't just try going through time with it regardless.

That's practically asking the game to play itself for them.

I actually do the same thing. But, hey, I can see why they didn’t hit the button. also, that moment immediately went into a cutscene of the underwater city rising into the air, so that adds another distraction.

Plus Patrick was distracted trying to get Ryan to buy shit for Bagus.

so, y’know, shit happens.

and I do find it funny how annoyed Ryan gets at the shitty future. it’s really over the top so that was like a little bonus for me to see him suffer for another 30 minutes.

It's not really an excuse, but I think they don't remember what button turns on the time-travel.

All it takes is realizing you need the ship to travel and test one of the four buttons. I'm currently playing the game for the first time as well (a bit further than they are) and I often forget which button was the time travel button. What I don't forget is the fact that it's a god damn time traveling and flying ship.

I'm actually playing Chrono Trigger for the FIRST time ever due to the endurance run. I'm staying slightly ahead of them by an hour or 3. After seeing the message about the messed up compass I assumed that either A. it's busted and can't use it for time travel, or B. if I can use it, bad shit will happen. Now I saved and THEN used the Epoch incase it went sideways, but I assumed it was fucked due to the picture you posted. If I was trying to talk over it with someone else knowing thousands would watch? I'd probably assume it's fucked and move on.

I don't know about you guys...but the first time I played CT I saw the 2poch with wings thinking "holy shit, time to fly this thing around!" Then I just did that. I don't care if the game told me that a nuclear bomb would go off if I tried to fly the thing. That was a total amped moment and I hopped in that shit in no time flat.

Are we sure they actually read that message? I still think they just forgot they had a time machine.

They did fly around. They flew all over the place... and then left it and walked into a cave.

Ah sorry, I must have jumped that part. But regardless, I also started hitting buttons the minute I was in that thing. You just got a flying time machine! Who the hell doesn't try to check that thing out!? It's like the gold chocobo of CT. I found the compass and the rest is history.

I feel like people are getting used to hand holding. I can see where they are coming from but c'mon explore a bit, try everything. That's what RPGs are about, freedom and player choice.

they did explore. they explored the shitty, shitty future.

I think what happened was also bad luck, combined with bad memory. When they got the 2poch, they decided to go check out the ocean palace that has risen up in the air, which makes sense, but on the way they noticed a random cave so they decided to check it out. They also checked out the Sun Keep cave. There was the time portal in the cave so they decided to use it, which brought them to the end of time where they were supposed to go anyway.

I don't think it was necessarily them thinking the 2poch was broken because of what Bobo said, because going into the cave and using the timegate was just a random thing they decided to try on their way to the Ocean Palace but it got them caught up with the next leg of the quest. The weird part was after talking to Gaspar not remembering the 2poch and going back and trying it out, which wasn't surprising since them not remembering things is a running theme.

I agree. I also think they are paying less attention and committing less details to memory as they have to keep entertainment the priority, which means lots of chit-chat between the two. Either way, it doesn't bother me. I'm here to listen to them talk, not watch the perfect play-through.

Ehum, anyway, have they said anything about just finishing the main story or are they doing side stuff too? If not, they're pretty close to the end, right? Like 80% done or so?

Patrick said they were going to "play it by year" on the sidequest stuff.

So I've been watching this because I haven't got much else to do and it's surprisingly more entertaining than I thought it would be. I don't think I'd want to play the game, but out of all the old JRPGs this looks like it's one of the better ones.

I kinda understand people being mad that they're not reading stuff properly (I'm up to part 13) but to be honest it's always been entertaining. It's a bit frustrating when I read something and know what they're meant to do before they twig, but hey.

I've only read up to part 13 in this thread, but I think there's too much hostility and pretty much sums up why they don't want to do ERs. Maybe there's been a turn around in attitude since that point, though!

Overall I'm enjoying this ER. I haven't played Chrono Trigger since I was a kid and I don't remember much about it. I think I had the flying Epoch and quit shortly after that. I only got frustrated in one of the early episodes where they were lost for like 20 minutes and the recent episode where they needlessly backtracked the long way. I'm still liking it and will watch every episode.

If they had both read that text and assumed that the 2poch was broken and useless, that would be one thing. Although that would still be very silly because they just got the thing to fly and immediately got into a situation where flying would solve everything. But they never once mentioned the time machine after walking into that cave so it seems more likely that they just completely forgot, as usual. And then the rest of the ER consisted entirely of them moaning and complaining which is not fun to watch. I understand it's hard to focus fully while talking and being recorded, but their commentary is usually very dry too. These two just aren't nearly as good at ERs as Vinny and Jeff.

Also, they still haven't figured out how to run away. Even when they tried holding L & R once, and Crono started going into the retreat animation, then they just immediately gave up and never did it again.

At least they got Magus. Now only if they realized that Epoch can time travel and fly instead of traveling by foot. They gotta go back to 12,000 BC to get their 2poch.

I think everyone is a little harder on Ryan and Patrick than they need to be. I mean, I know I've played games where I got stuck for a half-hour and didn't know what to do, then when I figured out there was a door I didn't see or a switch I didn't press I felt really, really stupid. They're playing this without the benefit of gamefaqs or a strategy guide or knowing it like the back of your hand.

I, for one, am enjoying their attempt at this endurance run.

I am still enjoying the ER, but when they are terrible.. they are terrrrrrible.

I think it's annoying people because Ryan and Patrick complain about the game as if it's not cluing them in to what they have to do next... when it actually tells them straight up most of the time.

The idea of them forgetting about their flying time machine (which they spent all that time getting) and having to walk through the future again is funny, but actually watching it is boring. I guess one could always skip it.

And that sums up the problem with it. It's simultaneously funny and aggravating because we WANT to see the moments of clarity, we want to see them experience the story and gameplay, that's what an ER is about. Instead, they spend ages doing the stupidest things possible and BLAMING THE GAME.

That picture about the compass going haywire is so wrong, it's blatantly obvious that the instruments are going haywire BECAUSE THE BLACK OMEN IS WARPING INTO EXISTENCE since it's exactly what happens. I mean, it's a short cutscene where that's the only thing that happens. How you read it as anything other than that boggles my mind.

And no, it's not 'cut them a break, no GameFAQs'...are you kidding, this game is from like 1995. My GameFAQs account is pretty old, but I'm fairly sure the site either didn't exist yet when this came out or it was brand new. Nobody used gamefaqs for this game when we were kids.

No, but your nostalgic memories of your time with the game are certainly suspect. You had no trouble with Chrono Trigger when you were six just like God of War looked just as good as games today do.

Damn, your wit astounds me. I was 13 when this game came out, the only 'trouble' I had was losing to Giga Gaia, which prompted me to farm luminaire. Knowing what to do? game holds your fucking hand, just like everyone in this thread is saying. I'm sorry if some people were functionally retarded as children, but I was not.
