Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Watched the first episode last night. I loved how they blew almost everything they could when it comes to the trial. I was also kinda surprised to hear that Ryan hadn't played the game much at all... I thought it was a classic most people had experienced at some point? I mean it was out on the SNES/VC/DS/PS1/PSN/ect

At least he is getting to play it now. And I never remembered there being much if any grinding in CT, but I did do several of the side quests before attempting to beat the game.

When I heard the next ER was going to be CT I was worried. When I heard it's be with Ryan and Patrick I was even more worried.

It's safe to say they've dispelled any worries.

Love the naming scheme and Brono shaking his head.

I've played and beaten the game for the first time last year.
Unfortunately, I chose to fight Magus, beating him on first try without much effort. :\
I was so engrossed that I finished it in less than a week.
Anyway, a minor thing, can you interact in any way with the guys that races at the fair in the beginning?

He--hey BRONO. D'you think that sign's very useful?

Ok.

I would've liked if they played something neither player had been exposed to (and possibly something more obscure), but Im kind of satisfied at the moment after this second episode. In a way, I'm kind of happy Patrick was there to talk Ryan through Double Techs and enemy positioning a little bit.

If you talk to one of the people near them when they're lined up together and not running, you can bet on who will win in order to get more silver points, I believe.

I don't believe so.

When they're lined up, you can talk to the old guy spectating on the sides to see if he'll accurately predict who wins (he isn't always right), and then you can talk to the guy in the tent to place your bet.

Thanks.
I remember I tried racing against them a couple of times, before and after I talked to the other npcs around there, to see if anything in particular could happen.
: )

Actually, yes you can. When the race starts you can get in the way by running sort of on top of the sprites and that slows them down. So all you have to do is bet on a guy and don't get in his way.

Part 03 up.

Yeah. On the one hand I find it a bit annoying/not in the spirit of the ER when Patrick starts talking about the game like 'oh this is the place you fight that big skeleton' or when he talks about the game and it's combat, like he's Quick Looking it but on the other hand it's nice to have someone who knows how to play the game to tell Ryan about some of the things so he doesn't end up missing some finer points about the combat system etc.

After thinking about it for a bit, I think I'm glad that Patrick's there to point stuff out. It makes for a different kind of Endurance Run, and I can always appreciate variety.

Glad that the endurance run is back, but I will echo that I didn't care for the game that was chosen. Chrono Trigger is a great game, but way too exposed and familiar. Should've kept to the niche titles like the previous two were. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers I guess (though I still wish they'd let the community vote on it).

I'm not going to pretend that I didn't also get a little lost after rescuing the princess the first time I played this game.

And next episode is going to be juicy.

Really enjoyed 2nd ep.
But god I sit here like GRRRR come on you miss so much cool stuff.
But than again I also like it this way, to see people do this differently.

That's exactly what I think. If I wanted to watch someone do a let's play, I could find the 40 other versions on YouTube. It's nice to see them going into this game relatively blind and just mess around and have fun.

Ryan seems pretty poor at keeping the thread of events in games, hopefully Patrick can keep the plot in mind. Looking forward to the court scene.

Patrick really remembers more than hes letting on, its pretty obvious in the third episode.

Coulda fooled me. They wasted nearly half of the episode aimlessly wandering the field because they skipped through the dialogue after beating Yakra too quickly. The whole thing was frustrating to watch, I was looking forward to seeing their reactions to the Trial but it never happened.

I wonder how they'll do when they start dealing with multi-headed bosses. For all the talk about how the game isn't particularly difficult, the boss battles do require you to properly manage multiple components at once pretty quickly. I think we all have a tendency to underestimate how hard it is to simultaneously play and give entertaining commentary; I can think of a few bosses (especially the ones with punishing counterattacks when mismanaged) that could give them troubles.

Curious to see what team they roll with. For instance, I didn't really use Ayla (Byla? Bayla?) until my third or fourth play, and now I love her. So powerful.

This is gonna be a loooong endurance run.

Mentally shouting at the screen for them to read the text already.

Episode 3: This is what happens when you don't read text. I have a feeling they completely glossed over the "escort her home" part at the end of this episode, too, but we'll see.

On the bright side, we get to see them go through the forest. Again.

It'll be funny to see that.

I already stopped watching and am rewatching the P4 run for maybe the third or fourth time.

Picking a game with no voice acting + everyone has played seems like a bad combo.

Glad they are doing it nonetheless though because I'm sure at least a chunk of people will enjoy it.

Yeah, after the third episode I'm almost sure this is not for me. This ER is pretty much everything I was expecting (but not hoping) it to be and it's just not in the same league as the P4 and DP ERs. Which is disappointing considering how long we've waited for another ER.

Oh well, guess I'm not wasting 30+ hours watching some guys play a game. :I

The P4 ER wasn't that great at the start either.

Going into it a lot of people said the highlight was going to be them reading the text out loud, they end up ignoring it all.

And boy am I glad. That shit infuriates me. If the text is on the screen I already read it, it takes ten times as long for them to read it, digest it, think about how they are going to say it, and then say it while the other person probably interrupts them a few times. I'd just wait for the youtube compilation.

It was pretty intriguing from the beginning, especially if you knew where P4 was going and it can't be stressed enough how well the Jeff/Vinny combo was working together. That made a big difference.

However, I don't intend to be too cynical about this ER. I'll watch the next two episodes and if they don't unlock some hidden potential I'm just going to drop it.

Lucca/Victory Theme is so fucking badass.

Who?

Or should I say bho?

I don't care if they don't read the text aloud for entertainment value, but why are they not reading the text for themselves? That's a little ADD, to just skip all the words and then endlessly bang against the walls because you don't know what you're supposed to be doing.
