Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

They forget the princess AGAIN?

-.-

I know being entertaining while playing a game is hard but seriously? They really need to remember/read things properly.

Getting a little better. The dodgy battery didn't actually make too much of a different, even though they skipped the same section of text twice.

And the iOS text doesn't look good but, if the pricing is right, I may still pick it up. Have a SNES, but don't have the game (is it super cheap now?).

Endurance Run is less about finishing the game as it is enduring the nonstop bitching from the audience.

Indeed. I think I'm going to slowly back out of this thread and just watch the videos.

I'm just glad I never finished Chrono Trigger or else something in me might snap and I might become as insufferable as some of the posters I see in here.

People bitching off-topic about other posters are tremendously more insufferable than anyone voicing distaste for the video content. If you don't want to discuss the endurance run then get the fuck out of the endurance run thread.

No it's something else – Chrono Trigger is one of my favorite games ever, and I don't act like a brat.

I'm trying to find a non-embarrassing place to talk about it. It's not GAF or the Giant Bomb forums, for sure.

I disagree, but whatever. there's a ton more bitching about little things done by Ryan and Patrick. It's crazy and nonstop bitching. not everyone plays a game like everyone else. not everyone pays attention to every line of text in an RPG especially when so much of it is useless. yet there's like, 50 posts bitching about the same stuff. it's just awful to read through.

but, yes, I think I will get the fuck out of this thread as you suggest as it's going to become just more annoying to read through as the days go on

Loved Patrick mentioning how efficient they were playing right when they reached the time portal area without the princess.

In this thread: gamers have selective memory and forget all of the dumb shit they've done while playing video games.
Heh, exactly, I remember, when I first played the game, I oftenly wasn't quite sure what to do next. Running around, talking to the same people etc.

Now it's automode of course. It's funny to see someone play CT and don't know where to go.
It's a refreshing look on this masterpiece of a game. Can't wait to play this with my children!

It's definitely strange. It's been so long since I first played this game, and I've played it so frequently since that everything is so second nature. There are parts later in the game that they might even need some outside help for.

There's dumb shit and then there's "ignoring or forgetting what a character says to you twice in a row even when the first time made you run around for 15 minutes." I've played only maybe the first hour of Chrono Trigger and it's amazing how they're practically willfully ignoring what people are saying. When Ryan has to repeatedly remind or correct someone on things that happened literally 30 seconds ago, something is weird.

EDIT: Actually watching it, what annoys me more is Patrick's insistence on pleading guilty in the trial, there was a ton of stuff at the fair the game keeps track of (where they actually manged to do everything "wrong" to get a guilty verdict.) Pleading guilty the whole time cuts that sequence off early. :\

This actually is where voice acting helps, because I think they're rushing through the text to be "entertaining", thinking that nobody will want to sit there while boring text boxes litter the screen.

When there's voice acting, there's something more going on, so I think they'd be a little slower to just skip past stuff.

So maybe if Bucca was actually saying things, they'd pay attention to her basically saying to Brono "GO TO WHERE SHE DISAPPEARED, IDIOT" instead of just mashing the button to get back to them running aimlessly around the screen as quickly as possible.

Not that any of this complaining matters. At this point, I'm fully convinced that the entire ER has already been recorded.

As someone who knows exactly how the game plays out of course I would love it if they played every sequence a certain way, but they are trying to create entertainment without having played or (or played in a while) the game before. If they had played the game before it would be boring and silly for them to play through again and attempt to create a "perfect" run through.

Yeah theres the Cat Girl and the whole Candy section that was missing.

The thing is though, I've pretty much never done any dumb shit when playing games. At most I remember fucking up at times due to me lacking skill.

Most of the problems the GB guys have when playing games (in ERs or QLs) usually stems from not reading stuff or paying attention when told what to do/how to do something.

I do understand that they need to be entertaining and sometimes can't pay attention but there are two (or more) of them at a time during QLs, you'd think that would increase the chances of noticing stuff/remembering what to do.

It's the other way around. They're talking to each other, paying attention to the person in the room with them over the videogame.

If you guys are getting bothered by this stuff, I can't wait to see the meltdowns that occur later in the game. You think they're going to know how to deal with the Golem Twins right away? Masa and Mune? Son of Sun? They aren't saving on the world map all the time, just wait until they die and realize they have to start from an old ass save. Hell they don't even top off their HP in battles where one powerful attack can fuck everything up already, how do you think they'll fair against some of the other bosses?

I'm not critiquing Ryan and Patrick here, just saying that if you guys lose your shit now, you're gonna want to kill yourselves watching this the further it goes.
Best to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Also I'm calling it right now
they'll kill Magus
.

Oh ok. It seemed like everyone is pissed.

I like it so far. You can tell that Patrick remembers the game better than he had hoped and tries to conceal that. It would be a lot more fun with both not knowing the game at all. I don't mind their getting lost or making the silliest of mistakes. The game is enjoyable to watch, it doesn't really matter who's playing.

If it wasn't for all of these mess ups, this endurance run would have been extremely boring.
It still has already gotten kinda meh, but I'm surprised I made it this far.

The problem here is that they are blowing through text, then getting lost/not knowing what's going on. It's not enduring, it's frustrating as hell and not in a "oh they don't know whey they're doing arrrrrrgh" way, it's in a "they don't give a fuck" way. I think their games need to have voice acting, if nothing else just to have something that doesn't allow them to skip text so they maybe know what the fuck is going on.

"Brain damage!"

Oh you guys, it can't be that bad...

*watches episode*

Oh my God...

They did worse in these battles with Yakra. They forgot Barle again (though maybe they wanted to grind a bit again?). They blew through text again, even though in older RPGs, you had to read the text to understand what was going on, what you did, and what your next objective is.

Regarding the Trial... admitting that you started it because that nets you one juror who says you're innocent; telling the truth and saying that you stole stuff will make you look better. Unfortunately they didn't do the "finding the cat" bit at the beginning of the game to make that part happen. Then they outright said that her fortune tempted them, which skips over everything (including the candy bit), and will land you a guilty verdict no matter what. Quite disappointed. :/

We'll have to see what they do:
-
Wait it out for a few days and have Bucca rescue them
or
-
Rattle the cell and escape on their own

If they replace the battery on the cart, they'll lose their saves anyway (because you will have to remove the battery which will cause the data to be lost... I know because I did that with my copy of Lufia II which was not very pleasant). Probably best to keep multiple saves, and keep it in the SNES for the rest of the Endurance Run (ie: never take it out until they're done).

They aren't too far in right now, but if they wanted to, they could take Will up on his offer now and not have to do a ton of stuff over again... but I don't think they'd want to do the Yakra battle again.

Ryan's scared of mushrooms? They should have played Chrono Cross instead.
I'd go for this ER.

Oh noes, they aren't taking the optimal route! Burn them in effigy!

The only thing that disappointed me about the trial was that they didn't proclaim their innocence, which would have resulted in them seeing just how many of their actions were being tracked during the opening sequence of the game.

Seriously. I like how all the Giant Bomb threads devolve into posters judging the cast on every single thing they say and do.
It's not every single thing.

They've made the same exact mistake twice, from not reading the same exact text in the same exact place, and wasted probably a half hour's worth of time doing so.

I just don't see the point in saying "I'm going to play this game all the way through for 40 hours" and then refusing to pay attention to the game you're playing. You're skipping the text, you're barely engaging in the combat, what part of the game are you actually looking at?

If they secretly switched to the Virtual Console version of CT would we even notice?
...Does Chrono Trigger (VC ver) have sharper graphics (ie: sprites and backgrounds) and a better framerate?

Yeah, that was truly the core problem with this ep. They need to pay better attention to the text.

Since I sound like the people who were whining during the last ERs I'd like to clarify, I don't care if they play perfectly or do things exactly like I would. They're just setting themselves up for failure and it turns out that's not very fun to watch.
Yeah, I don't give a crap about how they play, but watching them do stuff they did last episode wasn't awesome... It's kind of too bad they made the decision that skipped over the "KIDNAPPING" text in the trial, but the outcome is the same no matter what you do. You just get some extra Ethers if the majority of the jury says you're innocent.

Next episode will be better, hopefully. They'll go to
the FUTURE
if they pace themselves right.

They were probably ignoring the text because they already went through most of it yesterday. They even make a similar observation (trying to rush through a platformer).

Nope. It's just a direct port (emulation?) of the SNES version.

Anyway I'm enjoying the ER so far. Don't get the complaints. Everyone plays games differently, kiddos. Ryan and Patrick and keeping it entertaining, so I'm pleased! :)

This is amazing.

They're so bad at video games.

And they make their living off reviewing and commenting on them.

I can only laugh because otherwise I'd cry.

Is there really anything weird about that?

Not only are they playing it while talking which no doubt distracts a bit at times.

But does how good they are at games really make any difference to how good they are judging their quality?

I don't think so.
