Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Episode five was more fun then previous ones, despite the pretty poor Brad skill.

Watching it made me think about this: is this part of the game the only one where you can sneak attack mobs (or interact with them in any way outside of battle)? And, what are the boss battles that ends with a "special" Chrono attack/animations?

The what?

This was a great episode, much better than the last two. I think there's hope yet for this team to pair out.

So what does "terrible at this game" mean? Just because he plays it differently? Come on guys...

He takes a while to lock in attacks during combat, but it hasn't brought him any trouble so far. Mostly he just seems to play it like he plays most games in Quick Looks: buttoning through whole conversations and then saying "I wasn't paying attention to any of that". Y'know, the Ryan Davis Method :P

The DS version is the definitive version, though (but I have a really soft spot for the Woolsey translation; it's the one I grew up with and I treasure it). Pick it up when you see it in the bargain bin (I've seen tons of copies of CT in the bargain bin at Walmart :/).

In UK, its not so easy to find, actually. However, I intend to play it. Its one of those games I really wanted to play for quite some times, but never had the chance.
Do you have a Wii, its on the VC(should be cheaper than the DS version).

Don't have a Wii, so I can't play it that way.

I don't know what Ryan has against healing religiously. My guess is that he never plays RPGs, so it's not something that naturally occurs to him.

Also, why is he trying to avoid all the enemies? Does he not want EXP?

I'd say that, when he dies and loses a bunch of progress, he'll learn to heal. However, being Ryan, I think he'll just get pissed and blame it on the game not being fair or whatever.

In some horrible urge for schadenfreude, I'm hoping he avoids enough fights early in the game that he ends up having to grind later in the game to beat some otherwise easy boss.

Judging from the comments (stopped watching it last week), it sounds like neither Ryan or Patrick actually want to play Chrono Trigger but were forced into it in order to justify the purchase of the SNES capture device.

Then why are they saying they enjoy it, or that it was their idea

These people aren't conspiring, you know

Because they want to give people the impression that they're enjoying and that it was their idea? Their actions speak for themselves. I mean who the heck plays Chrono Trigger and tries to skip over the dialogue and plot exposition? That's 50% of the experience right there.

Could it possibly be that's just the way they play RPGs?

Could it also be why when a RPG is being up for review, Brad does it? Because he will, you know, pay attention to the story? Which is useful for a review, not that much for an endurance run?

I bet Ryan is playing this endurance run because he never played Chrono Trigger before. I also bet that, with him playing it, he has the control to stop it at any given time.

I'd wager that Jeff doesn't want to commit the time to do an Endurance Run again - he's always the one against them. Remember: The first one was Vinny's idea. Not sure on the second one.

Actually, Ryan is enjoying it. He responded to tweets about it. You can say he was reluctant at first but he's warmed up to it. Patrick was always a fan.

...oh god you're serious aren't you

90% of the dialogue in Chrono Trigger is useless and/or dull, especially compared to today.

Giant Bomb only does endurance runs when they want to. The community pressure to do a Dark Souls ER has been INTENSE, and they've staunchly refused because they don't want to. Ryan and Patrick actually wanted to do this, and so they're doing it.

It's just my opinion, I still feel that they're kinda just doing this as a job to make content and doesn't really have the motivation from the previous ERs.

You should watch the latest video instead of just reading the comments here. They're actually enjoying the game.

They seem to enjoying it. People are getting their panties in a twist because they're not playing it 'properly.'

People being uptight dickwads? In this forum? At this time of the day? And centralized entirely in a GiantBomb thread?

Actually the last one is false.

Patrick's disingenuousness is starting to bother me. There's no shame in remembering the game a little too well and everything that surrounds it. He knew about the similarity between Robo's theme and Astley's song beforehand. You could almost see him twitching nervously, trying to time the vocalization of his "realization" so that it would seem somewhat natural.

Good episode, apart from that. I'm glad they went with Bobo.

Guess I'll give them another shot. At least I can fast forward when they start running in circles again.

they're doing much better. they still get lost a bit but they read everything now and actually explore instead of just skipping stuff.

edit: hah, got to the end and Ryan was so into it that he forgot about the time. Patrick had to point out they're done for the day.

Just played through that section the other day and played it pretty much the same way, except I went into the sewer.
