Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Kind of a boring episode today. They totally missed the game telling them where to go again. lol.

Yeah, they're supposed to go back to 1000 A.D. if I recall correctly from what the game told them.

Watching them fight Lavos (who I guess will be the end boss) was fairly entertaining though. Interesting that he didn't just wreck them easily.

The old guy at the End of Time told them to go back to 1000 AD.

I think this endurance run so far can be summed up by something Patrick said towards the end of this most recent episode:

"Did we miss something?"

But there is something entertaining about watching them run all over the place trying to figure things out.

you can only be a humorless 100% perfect min-maxed speedrun with no jokes whatsoever, or you can spend 30 minutes running around because you didn't read THERE IS NOTHING IN BETWEEN

I've been told that playing a video game well in a stream is a big no-no, and the only way to be entertaining is to blunder around like an idiot.

The problem is that they're so concerned with riffing on things that they pay zero attention to what's happening in the game. I don't know how they're ever going to finish the game.

So if they happened to know the strategies for all the bosses Lavos copies could they have actually beaten him in this episode? Or is there a point where he will just do so much damage that you need to be levelled up to survive?

ten years later (in real time) they emerge from the portal with 1 hp on each character

"why didn't the game tell us to go back to regular time. OH SSSNESSSSS GAMES"

they reemerge in 1000AD, enter the forest, and immediately die and realize they hadn't saved in those ten years

they reload the save the next day and walk into the 65mil BC portal again

He would have eventually been too powerful, though on NG+ you could kill him there for an alternate ending.

Wait... there's magic in Chrono Trigger?

Granted I only played Chrono Trigger once, like 15 years ago, when my English wasn't that good, but I don't remember ever doing that and ever actually having Magic...

I did play this game almost to completion, but... I can be mis-remembering... maybe I just didn't use it ever?

It's been so long....

Edit: I... I think I had magic... but... I guess I really didn't use it all that much. I really liked the technique combos... Maybe that's it..

It's a good thing they did that, since dying in 1999 AD is the only way to see that game over cutscene.

They would have died. Although people have done low level Lavos runs before, IIRC they still use endgame equipment.

Yeah but each person was assigned an element. Like Crono is Lightning, Lucca is Fire, Marle is Ice, Frog is Water, Robo is Shadow
Ayla and Magus are shadow

I know that. That's what the shitty photoshop filtered graphic on each character screen mean. But I though their attacks had that propriety by itself, just like Lucca has a fire technique by herself.

What I'm wondering is, can you go through the game without unlocking magic for every character (like they didn't with Pucca) and without effectively using it? Maybe that's why I don't remember it - I just didn't bother with it after the first time.

I remember playing Chrono Trigger as a kid and enjoying it, but now, I don't know how one would play this game and not just riff it at all times. It's silly and erratic on just every level and just about every scene. And yeah, I've watched Space Mutiny a thousand times and are still lost at certain points because I'm too busy laughing and riffing, but oh well. That's how I endure b-movie camp and that's how these guys are enduring this goofy ass game. Better for it than just ripping on it cynically, ignoring it all together, or regurgitating the game like a strategy guide...and not enjoying themselves.

Well, I can only speak for myself when I say that I'm impressed that this endurance run is even watchable for me. I still would have chosen a million other games than this one, but this endurance run is more amusing than I expected and holds up...because the game doesn't hold up - it's more riffable and thus easier to talk about (or talk over) than I remember. Let them talk and crack themselves up. Sure, they'll miss this and that, but oh well. It's freggin Chrono Trigger not a piece of fine literature.

haha give the guys a break. I recall getting lost in the past for a long while before realizing the next 'trigger' was somewhere else.

And fighting lavos does tend to make you forget a single off handed statement made by the old guy.

It's all well and good if they miss some things or don't pickup on some things but when they miss what to do/where to go next and then spend a large amount of time lost, confused and maybe complaining that the game didn't tell them where to go/what to do when it did it can get tedious.

I for one didn't know they had to go back to their own time (I mean, I assumed they did and that would have been the first thing I'd have done) and I didn't mind them exploring dinosaur time (because of dinosaurs). It is annoying though when they spend so much time wandering about not knowing what to do because they missed what they were told. I mean, yeah, it can lead to funny and often is at first but then it gets tedious, especially when they've made this exact mistake before.

Because this has totally been about them running around for 30 minutes around without reading, right?

it's literally a let's play but they called it "endurance run" because they hadn't heard of let's plays

Also because originally they weren't sure they could endure playing through a JRPG like P4 all the way through. Remember how dismissive they were of P4 at the very beginning? "I'm Vinny, and I like pressing X!"

I played Chrono Trigger a long time ago, and watching this playthrough is actually making me appreciate how great it is even more. It's a really smart, well designed game, even(especially?) compared to a lot of games out these days. It's so compact and everything is meaningful and there's so many little neat touches everywhere, like how nearly every battle encounter is handcrafted. It does lots of interesting things with interactivity, like the trial, and it uses the time travel aspect of the story to do lots of groovy things. How many games let you go fight the end boss so early on? The only thing I can see some people seeing as a negative is that the dialogue is a bit hokey, which can be charming.

Well to be fair all P4 is for the first few hours is pressing X.

I like it when the wander around so far, but I've never played the game, so it's all new to me anyhow. Although I'm not sure how they forgot what the old man said so quickly.

One of the problems I had with the Deadly Premonition ER was that they kinda blasted right through the story and I heard that there were a lot of sidemissions and weapons they missed (including an rpg!). I would've loved to see that stuff as well.

Regarding Ryan's play, it does seem like he forgets about his characters HP far too easily lol.

I don't think it's possible. While certain attacks have magical properties (like Slash and Lucca's Fire attack), you just straight up need the lighting spell on some bosses to break their defense. As far as I remember, later in the game there are enemies that are immune to everything but Ice, and Lighting, and Fire and you need those spells to kill them. Hell, the next boss they have to fight is a magic fight only. I'm going to laugh when they accidentally take Bobo with them into the "Cave of Magic" where only magic hurts enemies.

I agree, it's extremely irritating. At least in the Jeff and Vinny ER's when they were still paying attention to the diaologue while riffing on the game.

heck even standard dino fights are a lot more tedious without magic. Which is a bit annoying due to how slow magic casting animation is compare to other attacks (I think the time is about the same, but it 'feels' much slower.

You don't get the mob version of magic attacks until much later right?

Fuck this thread, after today's episode I'm completely on board. With them saving in all 3 slots, and it sounding like they went to the complete wrong area, I'm genuinely interested if they'll lock themselves into some unwinnable situation. This could be the first ER where they actually give up.

Seeing as I started watching the P4 ER recently I can say that they were not dismissive, Vinny and Jeff were just joking around about how they had no real freedom or control, which is definiteley true for the first few hours.

They weren't too too invested in any of what was going on, and Jeff particularly didn't think they were going to finish the game.

Never really watched anything from GB before. Is the Endurance Run basically a daily Let's Play?

Go watch the P4 endurance run or some quicklooks.

This endurance run is basically the worst case scenario for GB content. Would be like saying chicken nuggets are gross so I'll become a vegan.

Full low level game is crazy amounts of planning too (you have to take advantage of the fact battle experiance is out of party 2/3, in party but dead 0). I think they use tabs too. But low levels=low HP=dead party (well...
Green Dream gives one person a second life
)

The speedrun is an interesting take, while not a low level game (tactic)
IIRC they use Ayla and the low HP=high damage tail attack and get "The Phrophet" ending. I guess they crash the Epoch but I forget if that can be done without the wings opened

Parts of it are very frustrating to watch and make me think "oh, so these kinds of guys are the reason why games these days hold your hand so much and teach you the mechanics like you're a 2nd grader" but I'm enjoying it overall.

What would everyone prefer: watching an ER where Ryan is terrible at rpgs, or Brad being terrible at any game?
I've said this before, but Brad isn't actually bad at games, he is just really slow at learning them. Once he clicks with something he's awesome. Therefore Quick Looks unfortunately make him look like an idiot.

Ryan starts a bit higher but his ceiling is apparently WAY LOWER. He doesn't pay attention, he skips through important stuff, he forgets anything that's been off the screen for more than five minutes, it's terrible. This is the third time in 8 episodes that they've spent upwards of 20 minutes wandering around the wrong place because Ryan doesn't read and retain what's written in the game's text.

Granted, it was MUCH less annoying this time because they were actually discovering a new area, and learning a bit about some of the techs and items in their inventory.

That too. My thought earlier in this ER was, "DAMN, modern games make you soft". this is one of the easiest, non-grindiest RPGs you'll ever play if you just pay attention, and nearly 1/5 of the total ER time has been them wandering around lost because there isn't an objective arrow on their screen.

Obviously not but expecting them to pay attention is one thing, expecting them to play with some kind of strategy is another. If I haven't seen dozens of videos of Ryan playing games, may be I wouldn't have known what to expect.

I don't understand why people in this thread are complaining so much. How is it unreasonable for 2 people who either haven't played this game, or haven't played it in forever to have some missteps?

If they knew what they were doing it would be boring.

Is this some kind of thump your chest, my ePenis is bigger then yours thing?

Haha, i liked that they tried to fight Lavos. The reactions from Ryan to the end of the world scenes were great.

Wonder how long it will take them to realize Bucca doesn't have magic yet.

Well they commented on that when they left the room. They wondered if Bucca would get the magics at that point or if they would need to take every character in there at some point.

Making a big deal about nothing. Again. If anything it's more interesting that they went to the pre-historic era instead.

I don't see anything wrong with the video either. People getting frustrated over nothing.
