Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

I guess they must be doing something right if they can get people to keep watching in spite of the fact that after 4 hours they haven't shown much interest in engaging with the story, battle system, or game mechanics.

"It's kind of weird, not a real strong focus right now."
"Nope."
"It's sort of like, 'Yeah, go and do stuff, I guess...'"

if I remember correctly, they went off and fought lavos after the 'hint'.

I'd forget about the little hint as well.

To be honest so did I but I would have gone back to their time as that seemed to be what the point of everything was (why they wanted to find the time warp thing in the future). Going to the prehistoric time is all well and good though, they are having fun and I'm seeing new things, it's just annoying when they say how the game didn't say where to go when it did but they'd forgot and they end up spending a bunch of time not progressing through the game at all.

That's how I feel. I'm watching because I love Chrono Trigger and GB, but that doesn't mean it's not frustrating at the same time.

At the same time, though, they're kind of showing why Chrono Trigger is so great. All the sequence-breaking, for one. They went off and fought the last boss in the game, then went down and explored 65M BC because 'dinosaurs'. And the game is okay with you doing all of that.

Indeed, they're exploring around and I like that.

Yeah that stuff is great and I'm glad they are doing it. Their entire reason for the place they are in now was dinosaurs (and the game delivered). I like when they go off and explore/do stuff. It leads to fun usually. It just sucks when they've exhausted all they can in these tangents and then wander around in places they've been over and over trying to find out where to go next after being told (I mean, they haven't gotten to the wandering back and forth yet, probably in tomorrows episode).

I really loved how they fought Lavos just because the game let them. That was awesome (of the game and the guys for actually doing it and giving it a try).

I'm pretty sure SA had the Let's Play thing going before 2008.

So did the Penny Arcade forums, probably some cross pollination between there and SA.

I don't mind the "style" in which Ryan plays - no healing or whatever. All I wish is for them to pay attention.

Oh lawd, is this another mediocre one? If they got to Prehistory, then they must've had some interesting reactions...

It can't be that bad.

I'm pretty sure I immediately went to the same timeline they did and got lost when I first played. I'm glad the internet wasn't watching to judge me!

I'm a fan of Giant Bomb, a lot of fans have an established interest and you can play off built up good will for a while. I'm rooting for them to do a great job, they'd have to screw up pretty bad for me to stop watching altogether, they haven't screwed up that badly yet. It would take a real "Let the record show, I never..." moment or even worse.

Making a big deal about nothing. Again. If anything it's more interesting that they went to the pre-historic era instead.

Well, it's not nothing. People are over-reacting, but it's not nothing. On a lower level It's a little annoying having them say stuff like this, or any reaction wherein which they end up blaming the game as a result of not paying attention or general ineptitude. It's a bit more annoying imagining them carrying over similar behavior to newer releases I'm actually actively seeking their opinions on to inform purchase decisions.

You're right about it not being a big deal, but it's not nothing, I get why people are upset.

The only thing that's really irking me now is that they don't seem to realize enemies have counters. "Try an attack me, if you can!" "SURE THING"

It's highly unlikely that they play games they actually assign a score to like this

Yeah, it really wasn't that bad. I'm pretty sure that my first time through I used the Bucket after learning magic too. They kinda spoiled
Heckran
, but they need to go there anyway. And they got an ending... the "But... The Future Refused to Change" ending... :P

Though when Patrick was suggesting to Ryan to essentially take Lucca to Spekkio to learn her Fire spells, and when Ryan didn't really take the advice, I was like -_-.

These two can use magic.

This girl can't yet because they didn't talk to Spekkio to learn her fire spells. :/

Nice to see them sequence-breaking, though. I usually start grinding in Prehistory now if I'm playing vanilla Chrono Trigger. :lol

And, uh, yeah... as Zombie James pointed out... the game explicitly told them to go back to their own time even though they're saying that the game doesn't seem to have a focus at the moment.

I'm a little disappointed they're not putting much stock into Lucca's techs, since she's the fire magic user (since they're going to
get magic in the next ep from Spekkio
). She and Marle have some good Double Techs later on. The Crono-Marle-Lucca party isn't bad for first-timers since you have all the elements covered in one party... plus
an awesome Triple Tech
.
Ah, I am now reminded of that CT thread from long ago where we broke down the battle system for 10 pages. Good times.

I could resurrect my Crono/Marle ends worlds concept though. ;)

This thread a few days ago:

"OMG why are they running past all the monsters? They're going to be so under-leveled later on! You can't just run to the end in a JRPG you have to kill monsters to advance. Damn RPG noobs."

This thread today:

"OMG why are they wasting their time killing all the wrong monsters? They need to proceed directly to the objective. Damn RPG noobs."

That's what makes Chrono Trigger so playable, all the characters are likable and I just want to play with all of them. Enjoying the ER so far.

you beat the straw right out of that man

In their defense, I just replayed CT on the DS. The first thing I did was go to 65k BC. Admittedly, I knew that wasn't where I was supposed to go, but I was looking for sidequests.

I think I've been playing too many WRPGs lately.

How do you figure?

I mean, I'd like to think so too, but I can only go on what I see from QL's and ED's. So I don't know how it's highly unlikely other then me wanting it to be the case.

It's a lot harder to play a game and talk through it the whole time and make it consistently entertaining. You miss a lot that way. Plus there's someone there that's also talking that they have to listen to and carry on a conversation. When they review a game they do it by themselves and focus on the game (with headphones on from what I've seen).

Just wanted to pop in to say I love Chrono Trigger, was RLTTP, played it a year ago on an emulator and had an absolute blast playing it. Has aged surprisingly well. And i loved the combat system! Made it very hard to go back to FF-style randon encounters.

It's been a while since I last played, but what's the point of going back to 1000AD?
Going to
Medina Village, beating Heckran and then unlocking the normal gate at Leene Square to unlock the gate for 600 AD to beat up Magus.

Ah, I am now reminded of that CT thread from long ago where we broke down the battle system for 10 pages. Good times.

Oh gosh, that wasn't even a long time ago but if feels like it was a long time ago. I think that was back when we were both juniors. :lol

Good times deconstructing speed stats and Robo's benefits/flaws, indeed. Actually, the party breakdown you posted was pretty good. Based on that, I can see Ryan and Patrick, since they seem to really like melee (which isn't really best idea in the long run), will stick with:
Crono/Ayla/Robo
Crono/Ayla/Magus (which is the party that... well, breaks the game because of the raw speed stats)
Crono/Magus/Robo
Crono/Frog/Robo
Crono/Ayla/Frog

A few of these parties are kind of weird, but based on how Ryan's tactics so far, it seems like they might go with those.

I'm going to admit that that Ryan not taking advantage of Chrono Trigger's true strength: party versatility is kind of bugging me. But this is likely a consequence of not having recruited all the characters yet, plus only learning magic now. So he might get it sooner or later. I think. I hope.

I'm just a little surprised he didn't stick with the Crono/Marle/Lucca team just because it's a nice balanced team with nearly all the elements (save for Shadow) involved in it. Because of this, you get access to
the Antipode attacks, the Whirl attacks, Crono doing most of the heavy lifting while the girls play support, and the awesome Triple Tech
. It'll be interesting to see if he decides to use a Crono/Marle/
Ayla
team in the long run because that team has a fair dynamic.

I also seem to recall posting the Chrono Trigger OVA in that thread as well! There aren't really any spoilers in it, but I wouldn't really recommend watching it if you haven't gotten to the "sidequest" part of Chrono Trigger just because of some monster spoilers (since these monsters are the main characters of the OVA) and also Related Videos spoilers in the sidebar.

Nobody was complaining about them avoiding monsters, and nobody is complaining about them "grinding" (not that you ever need to in CT). What people are complaining about is that Ryan and Patrick Will skip through text and then complain that the game is giving them no guidance on where to go next.

Gramr, should I give this another shot after leaving in frustration after the ineptitude on display during Episode 4? Be honest, now.

I don't think you have actually read this thread if that's the impression you've gained.

The vast majority of people 'raging' just want them to pay better attention to the game.

Pay attention to the directions given in dialogue and pay attention to the basics of the battle system.

That's pretty much it.

Wait, were Barle's arrows hitting 3 times because she had the ribbon equipped? If so, wouldn't it be beneficial to equip brono with the ribbon seeing as how he has the strongest physical attacks?

Haven't watched the newest ep yet.

But for the people complaining about people complaining:

It is because they are saying/acting like the game hasn't told them where to go, when it clearly did tell them where to go. People don't mind them wandering around a little bit (Lavos fight got an interesting ending), but when they just run around the same zone fighting the same monsters & making the same jokes.... it is just a tad tedious and boring.

I think there can be more potential funny stuff for them to riff on and spend episodes on if they would only pay attention a little (and allow the story to progress). They should definitely talk to npcs more so they can have more material to joke about.. etc.

It's not like they have to be completely awesome at the game or be completely horrible to make this ER fun to watch.

Sure, but at the same time it seems counter-productive to complain incessantly about it. If you've disliked most of this so far, maybe it isn't for you? Especially since some people have no problem with it. And if it isn't for you, maybe you should stop watching?

That was definitely fun. CT is my favorite game ever. So good.

[Gold stud,
Magus, Dark Matter
] does break the game. Well, so do a lot of parties so you just have to control yourself. ;)
You've got me interested in this. Do you remember what thread this was in?
Found it:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=435606

We start on page 3 discussing the combat system. We wrote a real lot so you'll find a lot of info. For me though it started with this.
Marle is completely useless, both Robo and Frog are more than capable healers, and actually contribute to combat. Marle has no place in the game as soon as you can remove her from the party.
Oh no you didn't!
Chrono Trigger OVA.......my God what the hell did I just watch?
Greatness.

Wait wait wait wait

The rocks that the cave ape throws are called "shist"?

so... the monkey throws his shist at you.

It's actually a misspelling of a geological term. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schist

I don't know if it was translation error, or just to differentiate the enemies. And Pahoehoe is a specific type of lava flow, which the monsters change names into when they start chucking lava.

It's really clever actually.

Midway through today's episode. Glad they got on the right track though.

I'll definitely have to play this game for myself sometime. After just watching what has been played so far, it's hard to believe this game came out in 1995. So many great concepts that you don't see in a lot of games. I can definitely see why people rank it among the best games of all time.

What? Marle is awesome! My first time through the game I played Marle, Frog, and Crono.

My second time through I saw the light and used Marle, Lucca, and Crono. Antipode FTW.
