Giantbomb's Endurance Run: The Third: Chrono Trigger

Rather difficult to make a "bad" endurance run when the game is so good. Realized that it was the game that kept me watching rather than the players and started playing it myself.

I've started the game a good 4 - 5 times but have always had to stop, either because I lost the save or just didn't have time.

The game has made me laugh out loud a few times (something that games rarely manage to do.)

I saved Magus and he is obviously a quite powerful character but the lack of double/triple techs doesn't make him a very fun character to have in your party, a shame really.

I got his gear from Ozzie's castle and the new scyth (3x damage when other party memebers are dead) made me wish I could kick Lucca and Marle out of my party and go solo with Magus, haha.

As for the endurance run...it really bothers me how inefficient they are with their tecs and Ryan seems like the wrong choise for this.

Magus does have at least one Triple Tech. It's one of the "hidden" triple techs that requires at least one member of the party be equipped with a special item.

Also, I wish Ryan would just listen to Patrick some times. Patrick does seem to have some insight into effective strategies, but I think Ryan hasn't absorbed the battle system quite yet. For instance, he often doesn't seem to realize that a character is available to attack.

I facepalmed in Episode 11 when Patrick told Ryan to save Bucca for healing and use Brono for attacking with Spincut. So what does Ryan do? Have Brono use a tonic and do a regular attack with Bucca.

Yeah. This is all a result of the active battle option.

I just realized... why is Chrono's name "Crono" inside of the game? If it's due to a text limit or something, you'd think they'd fix it so the main character could at least be spelled. Hmph.

Text limit. And the localization for this was supposedly really short, and back before companies actually took the time for proper localizations. Changing the coding to allow for more than 5 characters would have taken far more work than they were willing to put in.

I always assumed it was because the game isn't named after the person Crono, it's named after the object "Chrono Trigger"

Can't wait to watch this when I get home.

On one hand, it's been pretty fascinating watching them stumble through the game.

On the other hand, they are most likely going to get wrecked by Masa and Mune because they haven't learned some very basic things like prioritizing healing, identifying when it is a character's turn, and reading most NPCs' text. It's so goddamn frustrating.

I'm sure I'll just go home and yell at the video.

I think this episode demonstrates that Patrick doesn't remember as much as people think he does. Especially towards the end.

Ryan: "We haven't been to that forest."
Patrick: "Nah, go up north."

....five minutes later....

Ryan: "The only place we haven't been is that forest."
Patrick: "Nah, we don't need to go there yet. Go north."

....five minutes later....

Patrick: "Go north."
Ryan: "No, we should follow that guy."

Guy tells them to go to the forest.

Heh.

I was a fan of "Don't go the forest, the game didn't tell us to go there and it seems pretty directed."

Compared to a few episodes ago: "Where do we go? The game doesn't really do a good job of telling us where to go."

Started watching a couple days ago and just finished the 4th episode. Ugh this is pretty painful to watch. Seeing them stumble around, getting lost and fumbling with the pretty simple mechanics combined with their overall tone of 'oh japanese games' is pretty tiring.

Based on how this ER has gone, I rescind any support I may have expressed regarding a potential Xenoblade ER.

Just imagine how that would have gone... 100 hours of bumbling, rather than the 25 of CT.

it gets better, Ryan stumbles through the MasaMune fight but he does good enough for it to be entertaining during pretty much everything else.

I guess the fact that 5 of my party have maxed-out HP is an indication that I should be finishing the game soon?

I'm currently doing the
Lost Sanctum
stuff, but I might give up on it. It's just one big fetch-quest.

Level 45-50 is enough to finish the game. And yeah,
Lost Sanctum
is pretty awful.

The worst part is where you get the specific item needed and you go to try and use it, but you can't because you needed to speak to one specific character beforehand.

oh man I did that area recently and it's probably the worst area ever conceived of in any rpg I've ever played.

I think you're more than prepared at this point. :D

And yeah, the
Lost Sanctum bits
are just one pile of suck. Probably the lamest addition in CT DS since they're so boring. :/

I'll never figure out why you would want to play CT on wait mode.
Seriously. Wait mode is so boring in games featuring ATB. :/

They made it just for the DS version? Well, at least we don't get to see Ryan and Patrick attempt it.

I'm pretty close to abandoning it, but I'm currently stuck in that boss battle with no MP left.

Finally watched the episode...

Well, that was... I think I'm going to adhere to, "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it at all."

:(

You're going about this Endurance Run all wrong. I'm taking Xanathus' approach. If you root for Chrono Trigger to beat them, then the episodes take on a whole new meaning. I actually
cheered when Masa and Mune killed them the first time
. Now I can't wait for
Magus
. Of all games, could Chrono Trigger finally be the one they never finish?
Ace in the hole is the cart failing. Oh what a gloriously hilarious day that would be
.

"But... the future refused to change."

Come on! Hearing your expert opinion on all their fuck-ups has been like half the fun of this ER so far.
I actually had something typed up but I felt it was too critical. Instead of doing this:

I'll do this:

I'm actually more disappointed than frustrated. :(

Maybe I should actually start doing that, lol. I usually like seeing people experience Chrono Trigger for the first time and I like seeing them experience and explore through the game. But if this keeps going the way it is, I might not have any choice but to do that.

"There's no reason for us to go into that forest..."

Btw, I distinctly remember them skipping a dialogue that does mention that forest. Even if they missed that dialogue I can't believe they wouldn't even be curious about it.

I'm kind of glad they died as well, they won't learn anything otherwise. The mistakes he does really confuses me.

I really don't like Ryan constantly trying to use status effect techs on bosses while Patrick once again tells him it probably won't work. I'd wish he would actually read what techs (especially double techs) do and remember it. They seem to be constantly unaware what deals more damage unless the difference is into the hundreds. Fumbling through items and nearly using ethers instead of tonics is weird too.

Looking forward to more deaths.

Chrono Trigger was, like, my second JRPG ever. I did not die in front of Masa & Mune.

New translation still pales in comparison of the Woolsey one. >:(

The DS translation isn't really that different. Other than Frog no longer speaking in a faux-archaic accent, I'm not sure why it would pale in comparison.

Ozzie is no longer in a pickle. That makes that entire cart fucking worthless, I'd say.

Never played DS version, but if those lines are changed, eff that.
I never realized CT had 'bad' localization. I thought it was intentionally quirky, which I always liked.

Having played through 90% of Chrono Trigger DS back in, say, July or so, I can most definitely confirm that "Ozzie's in a pickle!" lives on at some point in the game. Like the re-translation for FF4 on GBA, Chrono Trigger DS keeps a lot of the more "iconic" lines.

The real tragedy is that Magus feels a bit overwritten in CT DS. Everybody refers to him as "The Great Fiendlord Magus" a lot of the time (or something similar) and instead of simply "A black wind blows...", Magus now says something like "A dark, black wind howls..."

They also toned down Frog's ye olde englishe. But for the most part it's fine. I actually need to get back to it; I got to the part with
Robo replanting the forest and Lucca having her nightmare about her mother being crippled. I know the password, but I keep flubbing the input and once I do that I usually turn the DS off and forget about the game for a few weeks.
That scene is so heavy that I can't just jump back in immediately and try again.

Incidentally my favourite scene in the game... I have to imagine they won't get to that though.

Frog never used ye olde faux-Englishe in the Japanese version. Instead he was a snarky asshole rather than a polite benevolent knight, so the DS translation retains that. I personally prefer the Woolsey Frog, but the Japanese Frog isn't so bad.

And I really dislike what they did to Magus in CT DS: FIENDLORD! It's more accurate, but again, I liked Magus's straight-to-the-point lines in Woolsey's translation. Also, "Mystics" always sounded a lot better in my head than "fiends", but "fiends" makes a heck of a lot more sense.

One thing that I think the DS translation does better is explaining the hints. I honestly don't blame Ryan and Patrick for not getting that they could use Slash during the Masamune fight. I mean, the hint refers to "EnergyWhirls" which seems very specific yet the boss doesn't ever use that term.

There's a definite tonal change in most of Magus' dialogue. In the SNES translation he has a bunch of snarky lines and insults, but on the DS he comes off as cold and serious.

Yeah, the DS translation fixed a bunch of stuff like this, most notably they fixed Gaspar's hints.

What I bolded is definitely something I dig. I'm also interested in narritives that deal with the end of the world or after it, a post-apocalypse if you will ;) I also dig things that have a "retro-future" vibe, stuff like steampunk for example. I'm also way more into science fiction than fantasy.
You should play Fallout 1 and 2 man. They're not JRPG's, but they're great. Unless you already have and thus pretty much described the series in your post.
